A young nurse who saved my life four years ago couldn't have done that if her ancestors hadn't gotten into a fight causing them to miss boarding the Titanic.

Ha, when I was like 18 I was walking up an alleyway almost home from work anda couple of the neighborhood kids ran up to me and said their little sister had climbed a fire escape. The baby was maybe 24 months at the most. I ran up the fire escape and found her on the roof of a 3 floor apartment building, standing on the edge looking down. I sure didn't want to scare her. When she heard me she turned around to face me with her heels on the edge. I don't do heights myself and it was incredibly hot so my head was already spinning- but she was fine, just looking at me. I was so scared I would cause her to take a step backwards. I managed to approach her really slowly, telling her I had candy for her. Then when I got close enough I lunged at her and caught her arm. When I carried her down her mom was at the bottom, her mom was there, having been retrieved from the bar on the corner. She just took her baby like "thanks" 🤣🤣🤣. That was over 20 years ago. I still think about her every now and then, what she's up to, how she has changed the world. She probably has kids by now, and who knows what they and their descendants might do? It's so strange, how really, everything that happens is some kind of butterfly effect of a million different people making precisely the decisions they did when they did.

Never heard that story about George Washington. Crazy how one small last second decision can COMPLETELY change history. wow!
Washington's net worth was equivalent to over $500 million in today's money. He probably had prior knowledge of the factors he could use to defeat the enemy, including their lack of communication and false sense of security. If he was that rich, he was probably also the type to put business before pleasure and attend to any important developments immediately. He would've translated that note in no time.

@@motherpigeon1582 Washington probably knew exactly who was on duty that night. Their personalities, their linguistics--all of it. He was probably hoping that nobody spotted him, but if they did, a breakdown in their communication was equally useful. He may have even pulled a few strings to GUARANTEE that these stooges were on the watch that night. Did you know that the US government has a whole department devoted to communications interception? It's called the National Security Agency, NSA for short.
@@motherpigeon1582 Also, Washington probably created the false rumors that the British were "winning" the war. This also encouraged the enemy to let his guard down and get lazy and careless. Having amassed a half billion dollar fortune, Washington was probably readily open to novel concepts which deviated from "common knowledge". After all, if it was so easy to figure out how to get rich, everybody would be doing it. Probably none of his opponents even approached his aptitude in this regard.
@@motherpigeon1582 Look at it this way: Washington was a sneak. That much is clear. So he probably fought his war in a whole VARIETY of underhanded ways, in addition to physically slithering across the Potomac.

I did extensive studies on the titanic and never once was the locked room ever mentioned -.-
It wasn't a "locked binocular room" it was a locked locker at the crows nest. It's also a myth that the binoculars would have helped as the there was no moon while the sea was calm and foggy that night. The crew would scan the horizon with peripheral vision then examine with a looking glass.
ie no light, no waves to crash and show ice moving, and you can't look through fog even with glass.

This is why I love history. One simple choice or action can change the course of the entire world. The story about Washington and the Revolutionary War was unreal.

I was under the impression that the sinking of the titanic was a multitude of factors and not just "missing binoculars"

I once accidentally took a piece of equipment from my workplace, and my team struggled without it. I felt really guilty and I bought them donuts the next day. At least my mistake didn't cause them to hit an iceberg and become the most famous shipwreck in history. Way to put things in perspective!

@@edwardpatrickson are you dumb, ofcourse they would have made a difference, the ability to see futher and avoid obstacles far in advance of when they come to view with the naked eye is obviously going to make a difference. However i wouldnt say its his fault, White star line did plenty of things that would condemn the ship if it hit an iceberg. Although having 1 key for important equipment is a msssive oversite, they should have had back ups and the captain should have also had a guy.
True at night the best way to spot icebergs would be with the naked eye, binoculars are for examining something that has already been spotted not for searching for unseen things @@edwardpatrickson

And they went a different route with full speed, knowing the icefield. That is so not his fault. And there should have been a spare pair of keys.

I always found it amazing that a book was written titled "The Wreck Of The Titan" years before the Titanic sunk in the Northern Atlantic. Which plotted a similar voyage from a top of the line ship that was deemed unsinkable with the same fate occurring.
There is so much like this. Many philosphers predicted hundreds of years before events happened but no one believed them. It Is kind of weird . You can look up predictions that came true on RUclips if you want. There are so many predictions written precisely and rightly predict many major events.

I know it wasn't viewed the same way back then that it is today, but Teddy proudly shot a lot of what are now endangered animals. He was really, really into it, Don Jr and Eric Trump style. Pretty gross. The militaristic stuff was bad too.

If you lived in that time, you would also be the same. Just like, if you lived in Germany 80+ years ago, you would have been a nazi 99.9% because every single person on this earth revolves around their surroundings.
They lived 100 years ago and were told that this ship was unsinkable. Why would they assume otherwise living in that time? It doesn't seem that long ago to us but it terms of technology. We have advanced massively. You should not expect the same from these unfortunate people who does not have hindsight.
Omg. I've always had a weird fascination with the Titanic, even though I'm not really a boat or sea person in general. For whatever reason, that particular ship and it's story has always intrigued me. I've watched a lot of documentaries on it and not ONCE have I ever heard that really small, yet really important detail. Crazy.

Most disasters are the result of a series of small, seemingly unimportant actions. Like the loss of the binoculars.
Because it's inconsequential. The binoculars would not have helped them in the conditions they were in that night. They still would not have seen that iceberg until it was too late.

The fact that they didn't break down the door to the locked room with the binoculars is the real tragedy here. Considering the size of the ship, the importance of lookouts and the trivial nature of repairs on a ship there should have been no hesitation in breaking in to that room. I am certain it was not locked up like fort knocks and a sledge hammer or shovel could have broken in. Short sightedness is really amazing sometimes.
Oh yeah they could have absolutely done that, or turned back. But the Titanic's story is rife with arrogance and laziness.
They were pretty certain that Titanic was unsinkable, so I don’t think they were fussed about the binoculars to be honest.

He wrote about an amazing horror story in a diary, which was meant to have been told to him by a grizzled old German hunter in the US named Bauman. If you want to hear it google search 'Bauman story roosevelt' and you should find it!

I m reading a book on the Titanic called “Unsinkable” by Daniel Butler. It is excellent, I highly recommend it. The author tells an interesting story I had never heard. Apparently, the Titanic was being pulled out of Southampton harbor and it was so huge that it created an immense wake, which pulled a smaller ship called the New York within a few feet of hitting the Titanic, which would have seriously damaged the smaller ship. A man on the Titanic who was watching from the deck, turned to the American theatrical producer Renee Harris and said, “Do you love life? That was a bad omen. Get off this ship at Cherbourg, that’s what I’m going to do.” Mrs. Harris, of course, ignored the man and stayed on the ship. She remembered later after being rescued by the Carpathia, that she had never seen the man again after Cherbourg. He followed his instinct and avoided an almost certain, terrible death. And he also tells the story about the binoculars, although I don’t recall him knowing the backstory about David.
If this was how history was told in school, I would've been more awake through it. lol
My History prof in college was like this. He had three doctorates in History
His lectures were more like Mr Ballen's stories. 75 minutes went by fast.
And I learned more in those three classes than anything in the 12 years prior.
Yeah if only he could have been a teacher of history it would have been my favorite class by far he tells awesome stories!!!

IKR. My 8th grade history teacher was biting and very strict. I also ‘failed’ her class. (I had a low A but if I got a B, my parents would consider it as a failure.) my 7th grade history teacher was more like Mr. Ballen. She was fun and I liked her class most of the time.
These stories make me think of the butterfly effect, something small and seemingly insignificant that has great repercussions down the line.

Yes, story telling is so key. I had a world history teacher in high school who just gave us sheets of dates and events to memorize, and he told no stories about the events. It was horribly excruciating to sit in his class, and I otherwise loved school! I was a big nerd in top 10% of graduating class, so poor teachers really disappointed me.
Usually, I really dislike when content creators just say dont forget to like and subscrib, but you have such a unique way of asking for it, and that was the first thing that caught my attention in your vids. Hands down, my favourite content creator out there rn. Keep up the fantastic work.
I’m from Belfast and my friends grandfather was a crew member on the titanic. A few days before it was to set sail, he fell and broke his leg so was unable to go on the voyage. It’s crazy to think that happening to him potentially saved his life.

Thanks for this, I've always had an interest in war-time (particularly American) history because it's rich with fascinating subjects and easy to get hold of. I live just outside Trenton and the Christmas time unaliving of the hessian soldiers is famous here for anyone who enjoys history. Washington was considered one lucky "B" - the weather and all other manner of luck seemed to favor Washington from trenton to Princeton. It's really uncanny.
Wow! I had never heard that piece of the story about the Titanic before. I even went to the Titanic museum in Halifax, Nova Scotia and also visited the gravesites of many victims. My Husband can't believe they wouldn't have just broke into the cabinet for binoculars. Mr. Ballen, thank you so much for your great stories and videos :)
The story of the farmer and johann rall blowed my mind. Such a little piece of time changed the whole world.
I wonder what happened to that farmer. I mean, here's a note in Johann Rall's pocket from him, warning that an invasion was imminent. I'm pretty sure Washington's army would have found that note and not been happy about it. Even in 1776, "Snitches get stiches"
@@jasonhaynes2952 The colonies in the Americas where British and that farmer like everyone else living in those colonies were British subjects, So that farmer was a patriot and the revolutionary army where committing treason. Had the British won I can only imagine Washington and co would have been hung for treason.

The US would have absolutely become independent anyway, just at a later time. The UK has lost pretty much every colony it has ever had.

I love how Mr Ballin narrates these stories. It is so vividly descriptive, it reminds me of a Louis L'Amour novel. It really puts you right in the action, and yet you can almost see, feel and smell the surrounding atmosphere. The amount of work it must take to gather the facts of each story must be extensive. Thank you for all the work you do to be able to present something of this quality for those of us on RUclips to enjoy

Well when you get super arrogant you make mistakes you would'nt normally make. After hearing that story it just made their defeat even more cathartic to hear.

Another titanic story is that Milton S. Hershey, founder of Hershey Chocolate company, was supposed to be on the Madain voyage along with his wife. Sadly, his wife had fallen ill and they decided to leave the day before the titanic on a different ship.
For those curious, they still had their tickets, and they are displayed in Hershey at a museum next to the park.
J.P. Morgan was also supposed to be on it and canceled at the last minute giving rise to all kinds of conspiracy theory

Yes but the ironic thing is decisions are made every minute, second that affect the outcome of future events. The importance of each, will not be known unless something spectacular occurs.

I have asthma. Best way to control it is by eliminating your anxiety triggers. It sounds silly but it helps a ton...i sometimes forget i have it...Also, fun fact, its not uncommon for asthma to go away as you age.

During my time aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, I bought one of the souvenir teddy bears...it's made up to look a little like him, including his glasses. That incident is a perfect example being hounded, and says a great deal about what sort of man he was.

I had a great grandfather ( 9 generations maybe 10) in that attack on Trenton NJ, Continental Army. I have direct ancestors in all the Wars from Bacon's Rebellion to the Spanish American War. We missed the ones since due to age or 4F status. I knew what was happening in that story, but I really enjoyed the way you told it. The same with Teddy Roosevelt one.

I accidentally stumbled across Mr.Ballen .. and honestly he is the best storyteller ever he has literally replaced all of my other True Crime shows!! Anytime I sit down to watch TV I always go to RUclips and turn him on❤ the only thing is I can't watch it when I'm trying to go to sleep because I get too interested and then I can't fall asleep..and you can listen to him talk for days .. keeps me on the edge of my seat. . @@guccimain89 Mr. Ballen LITERALLY explained in the video that the crew thought they didn't need any binoculars because they thought that their lookouts were skilled enough to spot any nearby icebergs with their naked eye, without any binoculars. Should of payed attention. 9:33 - 9:51

I honestly hope he does, I love the stories but he's at a point in his life with his family that he needs to experience. You can never make up or relive these important moments in life and I know he wants to experience them.

It was frustrating that the germans didn't understand english & then disappointed when Johann died because he didnt get the farmers warning in time, but then it turned into instant relief & regret when I heard it was George Washington that took him out, thank goodness for that! I felt chills during the second story, though, because my ancestors came to America as Hessian captives. My ancestors actually decided to stay after the war and become a teacher. It's so weird hearing something like this and knowing how close my family could have been to not existing

He does a lot of stories from Wisconsin, and they freak me out. Milwaukee resident here 😢, but I can't get enough of his narratives.
My grandfather took a job as a steward on the Titanic, and told my grandmother that he had the job.
She convinced him that with two kids, he’d be gone too much and he never reported to the job.
He went on to have five more children, my mother being one of them.
A good friend owns his grandmother’s steamer trunk, found floating in the North Atlantic and picked up by the Carpathian after the Titanic sunk.
Im just glad my ancestors weren't allowed on the ship at that time

There’s nothing better than sitting out on your balcony watching all of these awesome videos by Mr. Ballen. I would’ve loved to of had him as a teacher. I would’ve stayed in awake in his class no matter what he taught because what he speaks about very much interest me and always has and I love history so I think if he had to come to some sort of boring job or one that others think is boring he would’ve been an amazing teacher No Doubt.

@@michaelmoorrees3585 I would ask my grandfather, but he's dead. He knew beforehand the Titanic voyage would end in disaster. He tried to warn everyone. He shouted till he was hoarse "DON'T GO ON BOARD! YOU'LL DIE!" But it was no good. They simply threw him out of the cinema.
