@@butter7734 The captain is supposed to be watching the waves while the crew are on deck. Be aware of the sea as its unpredictable. It you se a wall of water coming towards the deck, even if it doesn't look huge, you tell your guys, "Watch out." or "Head's Up." Sometimes they just get a splash, other times you get this. And need to not only be aware of the incoming waves, but where your guys are on deck and keep both a count of them and knowing both where they are, and where they might end up.
If the weather becomes too bad and you can't predict when a wave will crash on deck, you call off work and get your crew inside to safety and jog around until the weather improves. If you watch other captains on this show like Cig, John, and even the late, great Phil, you will see experts manage these situations much better.

If you are the captain, and I hear you scream/whine " I don't know what to do", I will rip your hands from the wheel, send you out on deck, then, make sure you are rope secured, turn the boat around, and make you stay out on deck, while I head home, to make sure everyone is back safely on land.
As the "captain" and I use that word loosely for this one, you always have a plan B. If that does not work, go to C, D E, F, G. Anything to keep your crew safe!!!

Attention to detail, more importantly a lack thereof, can get people killed on the sea. You’ve shown you wouldn’t have done any better and most likely why deckhand was your highest rank, Miss Plan B-G. Attention to detail. 😉
