- While working coalie HK38 from Hartley Vale on 31 may 1992, I shot some video footage.
A pair of 81 class earache things for power on the 3300 tonne train loaded at the Grose Valley colliery.
Hartley Vale being between Bell and Mount Victoria, and 133 kms west of Sydney NSW.
Empty Hartley Vale coalies would work west to Clarence colliery balloon loop to swing, then return to Hartley Vale.
Reverse into the Hartley Vale siding to commence loading.
With electric locos you had to drop the rear pans as the overhead stopped at the begging of the loading zone.
After departing Hartley Vale, the coalies went into Mount Vic to perform the air clearance certificate brake exam.
That being necessary to plunge down the precipice from Katoomba to Valley Heights.
A glimpse of the Kanimbla Valley between Mount Vic and Bleakheath is squizzed as the sun is about to set.
The rest of the video footage was shot in the Smog Hollow Metrop during darkness.
Mount Druitt, approaching Parramatta, Clyde and the Up yard, finally ending at Auburn station.
I had been told that there was a house of ill repute in Rawson Street Auburn.
The things that you were taught by drivers as part of road knowledge.
And, no I never went there to investigate the validity of that claim.
Great video Steve, brings back memories of travelling up the Mountains to Lithgow. Mt Vic in winter was cold and the wind used to cut through you when you had to wait for the examiner to finish the brakes.
Yes Mt Vic could be a chilly place, and it amuses me these days with all the razor wire surrounding the interurban stabling sidings. I vaguely recollected having shot some video at Hartley Vale, but only found the brief footage when hunting for some other material.
Hi Steve! Great to see you back Sir! I hope you're doing well and getting out there trackside now and then. I hopefull start the move to Lofty late this year ?? Fingers crossed.
Take care mate,\
Cheers Gregg.
Cooee Gregg,
Yep, I stumble along now being an old fart pensioner.
Nothing much happens here on our pathetic railway to get excited about.
I only shot about 10 minutes worth of video during 2023.
And, only unearthed this video clip at Hartley Vale while hunting for other material.
You have Lofty ideas of relocation ?
I am not sure just where you mean, not Mount Lofty in SA ?
Avoiding the ravages of Mum Nature is the problem today.
At least it has not become too serious here.
Gotta feel sorry for the poor mongrels who are copping it repeated times.
Steve.
