Always had upmost respect for Hilary Benn as he’s always told it like it is but in a clear straightforward honest way with not holding any punches and holding those to account who dares to disrespect house rules.
Such a refreshing politician. That’s what we need more of in politics honesty, straightforward approach and genuine love of politics not just for only self gain.

Brilliant! I have also listened to Theresa May's response, and all I can say is that at least TWO members of the HofC have acquitted themselves superbly. Would that more would follow their ethical stance.

The legacy news outlets seem to have ignored this, one of the best speeches of the day. I'd have to disagree that we live in a democracy. It's a constitutional monarchy based on an oligarchic settlement with democratic featuresd.

I agree this is one of the best speeches - I have a very high opinion of Hilary Benn ( not so of his father whom I remember as a minister). However I do disagree with you when you say we do not live in a democracy. For sure there’re are many faults with it ( remember Winston Churchill’s comments !) BUT fixing those faults depends on the actively involvement of the citizens in its politics within its existing institutions. If we are merely cynical and apathetic we are basically giving up OUR democratic rights to, generally more extreme, elements of the population who are more motivated to be involved and noisy than us. Perhaps the most important demonstration that we are a democracy is our ability to vote out our government on a regular basis when we judge they fail us.

@@adamrawicz-szczerbo8948If those who vote find that the vote that the cast doesn't really count then it's not a real democracy .
This first past the post two party system is a failure and serves nobody well .
PR is our only hope .This is the only country in Europe that has this anachronism apart from one other and that is practically a dictatorship.
PR ensures that every vote counts and is represented in the monkey house. Tactical voting becomes a thing of the past and the number of people using their vote increases .
In short it's far more democratic .
PR would also ensure that no other political party of any colour would be able to inflict the damage to the fabric of society and public services that this government has.

In recent years the UK & the USA have both slipped 2 places down the International Democracy Table. The Republic of Ireland ranks much higher than either the UK or the USA on said table & Norway maintains pole position. At 73 I am old enough to remember that the international community referred to the UK as the 51st state of the USA. The parallels drawn by Mr Benn are still relevant. IMO. Unfortunately I have good reason to fear that the current New Labour leadership is, to quote Donny Dorling, 'further right than Merkle'. UK democracy is no safer in the hands of New Labour than it is in the hands of the Conservative & Unionist Party. Both Leaderships are concerned with power for its own sake rather than with the interests of the tax/fare/utility paying public & their dependents. Such narrow interests cannot promote any democratic process. IMO. However, kudos to Mr Benn for his speech in defence of Parliamentary Democracy.

Boris: to prove that its nonsense he held the house in contempt he goes round holding the house in contempt.
When he spoke to the committee and was asked if he would accept their decision, he replied, as a good many people pointed out, that he would only respect the committees judgement if it found him not guilty.

I agree entirely with your speech, but find it sad how many Labour MPs abstained. I expected many Tories to do so, and every one insulted the house, and electorate in not voting for the committee's report. I also find it sad that Starmer has been nowhere with this. Yet another open goal right in front of him and he can't even find the ball never mind take a shot. A leader has to lead, and Starmer isn't that person.

One can agree to disagree with someone but still deeply respect them. And on this matter I completely agree with him. As a right wing Conservative I believe Boris Johnson was a catastrophe for this country. Incompetent, a liar and clearly someone who presents with teh symptoms of NPD. His behaviour with regards to rubbishing this report and the committee’s members is what one would expect from someone with no principles or morals. Contemptible.

Here's my idea of what will prevent lying in the future. Remember that for most normal people, if you are caught lying you will lose your job - and it's written in your contract. 1. Introduce the word LIE into the house. Mislead doesn't make the threat of lying heinous enough.
    2. Create a system of 3 strikes and you're out. Keep on record each time a MOP has been found lying... not simply a mistake or silly quip etc. Hopefully this will make the MP think twice before lying about something. And obviously a 'lie' needs to be investigated. If the MP still lies and does it three times then that MP is thrown out of parliament and cannot return. it'll become an effective preventative measure.
The idea is in its crude state and obviously it can be streamlined but something needs to change in govt for the public to trust them again.

What about the parties the Labour Party members got away with, even though they knew they were guilty? It’s one excuse to know you are guilty, it’s another excuse to hire the civil servant that made the conclusion. Therefore Starmer , Rayner and the rest of those in Hartlepool’s office were guilty and should have paid the fixed penalty fee and resigned as MP’s of the Labour Party!

Trying to shut the stable door after the herd has bolted is pointless. Folk moved to the Tories in despair at Labour, and found them as bad. Labour has not reformed, and exactly one Tory and One Labour eminence have now moved to the centre, where the votes are - and they're not standing. What is the point of a Parliament which does nothing but tell the electorate without EVER listening to them? It's beyond control now.
