What a superb way of putting it ! I really admire the way Hilary Benn puts things across, always seems to be at the same cool & confident level, I do wish there were more like him on both sides of the house.
Always had upmost respect for Hilary Benn as he’s always told it like it is but in a clear straightforward honest way with not holding any punches and holding those to account who dares to disrespect house rules. Such a refreshing politician. That’s what we need more of in politics honesty, straightforward approach and genuine love of politics not just for only self gain.
Brilliant! I have also listened to Theresa May's response, and all I can say is that at least TWO members of the HofC have acquitted themselves superbly. Would that more would follow their ethical stance.
What needed to be said - no more & no less - clear and straightforward. Would that the individual concerned were able even to comprehend the principles you defend. Thank you. LGF
The legacy news outlets seem to have ignored this, one of the best speeches of the day. I'd have to disagree that we live in a democracy. It's a constitutional monarchy based on an oligarchic settlement with democratic featuresd.
I agree this is one of the best speeches - I have a very high opinion of Hilary Benn ( not so of his father whom I remember as a minister). However I do disagree with you when you say we do not live in a democracy. For sure there’re are many faults with it ( remember Winston Churchill’s comments !) BUT fixing those faults depends on the actively involvement of the citizens in its politics within its existing institutions. If we are merely cynical and apathetic we are basically giving up OUR democratic rights to, generally more extreme, elements of the population who are more motivated to be involved and noisy than us. Perhaps the most important demonstration that we are a democracy is our ability to vote out our government on a regular basis when we judge they fail us.
@@adamrawicz-szczerbo8948If those who vote find that the vote that the cast doesn't really count then it's not a real democracy . This first past the post two party system is a failure and serves nobody well . PR is our only hope .This is the only country in Europe that has this anachronism apart from one other and that is practically a dictatorship. PR ensures that every vote counts and is represented in the monkey house. Tactical voting becomes a thing of the past and the number of people using their vote increases . In short it's far more democratic . PR would also ensure that no other political party of any colour would be able to inflict the damage to the fabric of society and public services that this government has.
I am just a ordinary citizen of India who looks for political inspiration wherever I can find it, and yes I look at the UK too ! It is my ardent desire to visit the grave of Tony Benn and pay my respects to one of the tallest leaders of his time 🙏🏽
Brilliant speech, unlike the utter rubbish from the Johnson supporters on the opposite side of the house. It was like watching and listening to the GOP, but with posh accents.
I wish Hilary Benn would stand for leadership of the labor party. I believe he would win the vote and a general election. He is straightforward, honest and like his father, he truly has the interests of the people at heart, unlike what we have seen from the opposition who quite frankly is an utter disgrace
Thank you. Clear, straightforward and desperately needed. The parallel of some Conservatives behaving like Maga republicans has been depressing and worrying.
In recent years the UK & the USA have both slipped 2 places down the International Democracy Table. The Republic of Ireland ranks much higher than either the UK or the USA on said table & Norway maintains pole position. At 73 I am old enough to remember that the international community referred to the UK as the 51st state of the USA. The parallels drawn by Mr Benn are still relevant. IMO. Unfortunately I have good reason to fear that the current New Labour leadership is, to quote Donny Dorling, 'further right than Merkle'. UK democracy is no safer in the hands of New Labour than it is in the hands of the Conservative & Unionist Party. Both Leaderships are concerned with power for its own sake rather than with the interests of the tax/fare/utility paying public & their dependents. Such narrow interests cannot promote any democratic process. IMO. However, kudos to Mr Benn for his speech in defence of Parliamentary Democracy.
The video shows that Britain does indeed have excellent and honest politicians. They are NOT all the same. By the process of commissioning and then accepting the report the HoC has regained the very high regard that was tainted by the antics of Mr Johnson’s government.
This needed to be said. We now need to show that not "all MPs are just as corrupt", a strong myth believed by a growing number. Also the equally damaging "All Parties are just as bad". They are not.
Dear Mr Benn, please consider becoming the leader of the Labour party. I would be proud to vote for a gentleman like yourself, you are a shining example of the core labour party. Every word you said was true, measured and assured by the honest heart of a true, true Labour MP, thank you
Boris: to prove that its nonsense he held the house in contempt he goes round holding the house in contempt. When he spoke to the committee and was asked if he would accept their decision, he replied, as a good many people pointed out, that he would only respect the committees judgement if it found him not guilty.
It is enormously sad that only 354 MPs voted to support this report. This means that 296 showed their contempt for the truth. More than anything else in the past few terrible years for our so-called democracy this shows how awful the situation has become. The system needs fixing.
I agree entirely with your speech, but find it sad how many Labour MPs abstained. I expected many Tories to do so, and every one insulted the house, and electorate in not voting for the committee's report. I also find it sad that Starmer has been nowhere with this. Yet another open goal right in front of him and he can't even find the ball never mind take a shot. A leader has to lead, and Starmer isn't that person.
Great speech! Thank you! I will never vote for HB as I abhor socialism. But I deeply respect him, his integrity and the quality of his argument. One can agree to disagree with someone but still deeply respect them. And on this matter I completely agree with him. As a right wing Conservative I believe Boris Johnson was a catastrophe for this country. Incompetent, a liar and clearly someone who presents with teh symptoms of NPD. His behaviour with regards to rubbishing this report and the committee’s members is what one would expect from someone with no principles or morals. Contemptible.
Here's my idea of what will prevent lying in the future. Remember that for most normal people, if you are caught lying you will lose your job - and it's written in your contract. 1. Introduce the word LIE into the house. Mislead doesn't make the threat of lying heinous enough. 2. Create a system of 3 strikes and you're out. Keep on record each time a MOP has been found lying... not simply a mistake or silly quip etc. Hopefully this will make the MP think twice before lying about something. And obviously a 'lie' needs to be investigated. If the MP still lies and does it three times then that MP is thrown out of parliament and cannot return. it'll become an effective preventative measure. The idea is in its crude state and obviously it can be streamlined but something needs to change in govt for the public to trust them again.
A fantastic speech, extremely eloquent and succinct with valid TRUE statements, I would vote for you to be the next prime minister sir, better than any of the conservatives and Keir Starmer who seems so insincere.
What about the parties the Labour Party members got away with, even though they knew they were guilty? It’s one excuse to know you are guilty, it’s another excuse to hire the civil servant that made the conclusion. Therefore Starmer , Rayner and the rest of those in Hartlepool’s office were guilty and should have paid the fixed penalty fee and resigned as MP’s of the Labour Party!
Trying to shut the stable door after the herd has bolted is pointless. Folk moved to the Tories in despair at Labour, and found them as bad. Labour has not reformed, and exactly one Tory and One Labour eminence have now moved to the centre, where the votes are - and they're not standing. What is the point of a Parliament which does nothing but tell the electorate without EVER listening to them? It's beyond control now.
Your arrogance is only exceeded by your ignorance. Hilary as a name has been a MALE NAME for centuries longer than it has been a girls name. So update your stupidity and learn something. And if you are an American, the. Really, you are on very very shifting sands when you criticise the names other countries give to their children!
Quality thinking and perfect rhetorical content
Getting to be a chip of the old block ! So much respect for you and your father !
Wonderful Mr Hilary Benn!! As always.
Well said, Hilary Ben.

Considering how infrequently he referred to his script, it was a tremendous speech!
At last a true statesman …. a breath of fresh air. Politics as it ought to be …
Excellent. On sharp contrast with the adolescent whinging and rambling from Johnson’s supporters.

God bless you.
Well said Mr Benn, your father would be proud as I am sure he was.
If only we could fill the house with persons of his capability of honest speech,a better Place it would be!
Excellent Mr. Benn
Well said that man! Calling out the liars and bigotry in the tory party for what it is, utterly shameful.
Great speech. And an overdue recognition that BJ and DT have undermined so much of the fabric of our systems of government.
Eloquent, & forthright - just as his Father was in the HoC. The clarity of Benn's delivery is unimpeachable.
His Farther understood the Draw backs and dangers of the EU.This son is not Match on His Father !!
Brilliant speech, unlike the utter rubbish from the Johnson supporters on the opposite side of the house. It was like watching and listening to the GOP, but with posh accents.
At least there are some parliamentary MPs with gravitas. Why he was never voted in as Labour leader is beyond me.

Well done ...call out the liars ...
Well said Hilary , Perfect summary .
Thank you. Clear, straightforward and desperately needed.

Well put Hilary Ben 👍🏻👍🏻👏👏

Genius summing up. Dignified and articulate. A far cry from the rhetoric of the likes of Reese Mogg and Michael Fabricant.

My god, this man is a star - he must be Deputy PM in the next government
What a Prime Minister Hilary would make
Their judgment was pre-formed, 2 people made their feelings, and thus their voting intention, in advance of the committee sitting.
Great speech.
well said,hilary
Absolutely right. The lady hmm’ing every 2 seconds though is god damn annoying! 🤦🏽♂️
Yeah she was wasn't she. She was driving me mmmmmmmmmmmad
Classic..
Love Hillary Benn ❤ Only MP you can trust and believe 👏 He is a great speaker. ❤
Its better than his speech advocating for bombing Syria. His father was a brilliant man, but I have no respect left for this disgraceful man

@@AndyUK-Corrival Shocking, isn't it?
This man is too good to be a Back Bencher. He should be in the Shadow Cabinet.
I agree Hilary Benn ought to be a Shadow Minister because he has always been a most capable and honest MP.
The problem that still I think that stands is that the people who planed the suprise party allso should allso have been punished

Irrespective of his fathers views, this man is one of the leading MPs in the house. The Tory party had many but Johnson disposed of them.
He is Corbyn reborn…..oh dear…..
