    Great technique.
    The exact same technique is used for the main pillar of a Japanese rural landowner's mansion (Watanabe residence, Niigata, Japan) built over 200 years ago.
    They are made so that the ground side end of the pillar can be replaced as it rots.

    The most amazing thing is how he cut and finished the project to fit so accurately - and with the most basic of hand tools.imagine what level of work he would produce if he had a full set of modern, woodworking tools!!

    When I was about 10 years old, my carpenter Grandfather quized me how this was done. For some reason, I was smart back then and came up with the correct answer. He was impressed.
