Nice job, well done. I have used the “coffee can” measurement for years, I thought I was the only guy to do it until I saw Jim Pettinato do it in a video and laughed. Nice to see another one. Thanks for a great video. Excellent work.
Jim is where I seen it at 🤣🤣. It works absolutely perfect, I tried using a glass measuring cup at first but it wasn't big enough and was too fragile. I sometimes like to measure the total oil removed to decide whether or not it's trapped in the system.
HVACR Survival I had a younger tech tell me several years ago it was a hack way to do it and it was not accurate. I told him the coffee can lines were accurate for coffee company it was accurate enough for me. Lmao thanks again
Best refer guy I know told me when he was in the field and working on a system that had a plugged cap-tube, he’d open up the system and add a thimble sized amount of Alkybenzene oil, and by the next morning the system was operating normally. Just thought I’d share that info, has nothing to do with your video lol but now when I have to open up a system for any reason and it has a cap-tube, I add Alky oil, just a tiny bit. Haven’t had any issues with plugged caps in a couple years now. Great video as always, Rick 🤙🏽
Outstanding, nice job, the correct tools make a difference, I missed all the proper tools, now I have to deal with a hand torch to braze and some Crappy tubing cutter here in Mexico, so hard to get good tools here. Dearn COVID-19
Thank you so much for your kind words! Sorry to hear having problems getting the tools you need ☹️. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos.
Nice repair Rick . I’ve worked on several Duke units . The ones that I’ve worked on were at Subway stores . I have never seen them elsewhere. I always braze the cap tube on the coil before I install it . Makes the process easier. Those condensate loops are notorious for leaking .
That's what someone else was mentioning. I should have probably made a suction line for it and just shoved it through after brazing it together. You're on Target as far as where it's at 😎
HVACR Survival yes that’s also what I do . I make a shove in the coil with cap tube brazed in place along with 3 feet or of suction, just enough to add the rest behind the unit . Piece of cake 🎂 .
I have done many of those evap ,cap tube and condensate line change outs on that model. They are simple to work on. I’ve found that 8-10oz is best for those. Most nomenclature plates I can’t read anymore due to cleaners. Good video!
HVACR Survival you’re welcome. We have at least 25 of those exact models that we service and honestly those compressors are beasts!! They apparently can handle the slugging very well because filters/condensers never get cleaned until we get a call.
I actually have a two brazing mats that's fire retardant up to 1200°. I just didn't think about it till it was too late. I like your idea of the fan blade. 👍👍

Seen your stack of manuals next to your seat in the opening shot. I carry no manuals anymore, I put everything on an iPad. Even apps like Goodreader allow you to modify and make notes to the .pdf files. And the app reads Excel and Word documents, pictures, movies, etc. Pretty rare to not find a manual online these days.
@@HVACRSurvival Got some on my phone too. Too lazy to go to the van, so I do a quick trip to the Googles and download a manual real quick, or looking up a factory default password, etc.
Forgot to add... where do you get that roll-on adhesive foam tape you used in this video to wrap up the lines after electrical tape was applied. It had a yellow backing and looked maybe 2 inches wide?
Armoflex foam tape. Here's a link to some, it's not an affiliate link but it'll at least give you an idea of what it is. www.amazon.com/dp/B01HSNQ1O0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_ws8GFbFPGZAB9
Just depends on the circumstances. If the compressor has been running low on refrigerant quite often and going into a vacuum and running very hot, I recommend replacing the oil. I go back with Poe oil which is what it had in it prior and generally that works with all the types of refrigerant that I use. I've had callbacks where the oil has broken down from overheating and then plugs up a brand new cap tube.
(A1) It depends how bad the oil is. I've had a few that plugged up shortly after replacing the cap tube. Also I don't get paid for call backs, so I have been doing it this way recently without issues. (A2) You need to use poe oil on HFC gas, mineral based oil will not mix well and doesn't return to the compressor as it should.
If it's a replaceable coil I replace the coil and don't try to fix it just because the amount of time involved to repair it and then if it doesn't catch all the leaks or another leak starts the people are more upset about that money lost than the money that they would have reinvested into the machine to keep it running for a longer time.If there's a leak in the cold rail where it's inside of spray foamed wall, then no I don't even bother trying because there's really no way of doing it without completely destroying the unit.
I like to put the plastic spiralling thingy around the capillary tube when I can find it , it helps with protecting it . But if anyone gets oil on it , from taking off their hoses or such , then you'll spend half an hour looking for a non existing leak 😡
There’s a couple of manufactures that have the whole refrigeration unit pull out. The access was horrible through the cabinet until I looked at it for about 10 minutes longer. Also made an evaporator leak, on an R290 unit, easier under warranty when they sent the whole refrigeration system. Only had to plug in three electrical connectors and she was golden.
You got to admit though that was a pretty easy coil to change. And I hate all cold rails, there's very few that are designed to be left open and actually overcome the hot Kitchen.

When I do those evaporator change outs I make new suction line then slide it through the hole then I don't have to solder inside of box
That's a pretty good idea...I kind of like that 👍👍 thank you for the idea 🤜🤛
@@HVACRSurvival the suction line is generally junk along with the insulation. Why not do it all
Excellent.
I fully agree. Probably would have been easier.
