- What's the worst thing that we dread happening to our healthy tomato plants???.....Yes.....blight....and its hit whilst I've been away!
Apparently some other plots have it so obviously spread to mine.
Sadly it has also gotten into the polytunnel......you see me clearing the plants and rescuing some fruit.
Absolute nightmare , but we cant dwell on it....onwards and upwards.....focus on some positives....and there's a lot when you take a look!
Just come across your channel and unfortunately it’s this video. Heart breaking scene to come back to, but can’t I just add a wee sparkle how just how beautiful your wee poly is? Absolutely gorgeous planting. 😊
Aww thanks! That very kind….. yes it was a bit of a blow, but we get them from time to time don’t we?! Good news is that I manage to ripen up all those green tomatoes 🍅😁💪🏼💪🏼
It's strange isn't it, I have it on all mine in the greenhouse and have done like you collected the fruit to try to ripen at home, the strange part is all my outside tomatoes are fine, I will be at the plot again tomorrow so can check the outside ones again. You would expect it on the outside ones but the greenhouse has been closed for a few weeks now the weather cooled down. As you say there's nothing we can do so no point dwelling on it even though it's upsetting, the joys of gardening especially in this miserable Summer we're having.
Sorry that happened Will, but I'm not surprised in this crazy rain. This year I've ridiculous amounts of green beans and no courgettes!!!!! Strange, strange season! Hope the fruit you have ripen up as they look lovely.
Thanks so much……yeah was half expecting it with this crazy wet summer! Fruits are starting to ripen…..💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼😁🌱
My nana used to ripen hers by wrapping in newspaper individually and putting in a cool place, check daily 👍👍
Gutted for you Will 😢, gardening is so frustrating at times , like you say stay positive mate
Thank you, I will……ups and downs eh ! Thanks Jim 😁🌱
That's bad luck Will, could get some kale in ready for spring.
Yeah Ady, got some brassica plans….watch this space! 😁💪🏼
I could feel your disappointment. Fortunately us gardeners are a resilant bunch & the sight of some fantastic sweet corn raises our spirits once again That tomato harvest looks pretty good to me 🍅 mine produced flowers & the then buds fell off. Outdoor one looks ok.
It certainly is a challenge Joy….but we love it don’t we?! 😁💚🌱
it was a very sad year for tomatoes for many of us with all the rain n no sun
I agree…..so disappointing…….I think next year will be a good one for us! 💪🏼😁🌱
So sorry about your tomatoes. It's a second year in a row tomato failure for me too. Next year I plan to attempt resistant varieties at home in containers.
Good idea to look at different varieties! I had a fantastic crop all outdoors last year, but it was dry and hot so no blight! We just keep trying our best don’t we?! 💪🏼😁💚
Sorry to hear this Will, with all this rain, it can activate spores, but have to admire your sprits, clearing it all out and moving on. I find tomatoes ripen well in a dark place in those brown paper bags, or in a box if u have a large amount but covering them with the brown paper. I have seen some ppl put in a ripe banana to help speed up the ripening process 😊🍅👍
Thanks Amir, yes I used that method to ripen green fruit last year, brown paper bag works for me….we will see. Stay tuned for polytunnel plans! 💪🏼😁🌱
Will this is so gutting when it happens but fingers crossed they ripe up for you . I ripened a beefsteak tomato on the windowsill worth ago . Keep positive, Tracy 😊
Thank you Tracy…..yes keeping positive and moving on! 💪🏼😁💚
Oh, Will....I'm so gutted for you...and that it had to happen while you were away, too!!!
But you still harvested loads, and they will ripen.... so all is not lost!
On a positive note, your sweetcorn is looking great!!
Onwards and upwards, my friend.
Take care, Annie 🐞🐝🌱
Thanks Annie……yes absolutely, onwards and upwards! Lots of other positives! 💪🏼😁💚
I've got outdoor tomatoes.
Pretty much all of them are showing early signs.
Over the past few days I've drenched them with DIY remedies, Aspirin, bicarb/oil/washing up liquid.
Next time I'm going to spray with sulphur solution.
I might as well use the opportunity to see if anything has an effect.
I’m sorry to hear that Brian…..but at least you’re being pro active to see what works for next time! 💪🏼😁🌱
What a terrible thing to come back to after a holiday, so sorry. You still had an impressive amount of tomatoes though. Hopefully they will ripen well. If some stay green, try to make some green tomato jam, it is really nice, my uncle used to make some. Your sweetcorn is looking fantastic! Welcome back! 😄👍😘🌸💕
Thanks Nanou…..yes let’s hope they ripen up and aren’t affected! Fingers crossed for the sweetcorn! 😁💪🏼💚
That sucks mate, I've just noticed it on some of mine today although it's only affecting 3 out of about 20 plants at the moment. Luckily I planted them early so managed to get a decent amount before it hit. It's definitely this wet and humid weather that's triggered it as other people on my plot are also getting it now!
Yeah seems everyone is getting it now….guess it’s gonna be one of them years! 😥
My Romas are all affected so I feel your disappointment too.. lovely British summer hey🙄 the rest of the your allotment looks good..💚
Sorry to hear that Clare…..yes so disappointing when we invest so much time and effort! Onwards and upwards eh! 💪🏼😁💚
How weird, my corn is fine and I have a good crop of peppers and chilli this year (in the same greenhouse as my blighted Moneymaker tomatoes) must be the terrible wet summer we’ve had
congratulations on carrying out my brother's activities, keep up the enthusiasm and success for all of us, thank you for sharing very interesting and entertaining content
Thanks for watching 😀
Everyone's nightmare, Will! Hopefully my spraying regime has worked for me.
Are you sure that is blight in the tunnel, can't see any black stems. It looks more like dehydration.
Hi Steve….at first I thought so too…..but when I inspected them further, every one had blight! I think the crispy leaves were just drying out after the blight hit them. Stems were all black! Least I managed to rescue the fruit! 💪🏼🌱
Heartbroken for you, Will 😢 That was a lot of fruit 🍅 Keep an eye on all of it as you're ripening them, the blight could have also affected some fruit and it might take a few days for it to become visible....I also have blight now in the greenhouse and keep picking off as many of the affected leaves, also if I've used fabric gloves to touch the blighted foliage, I'll throw them into the washing machine after 😉 The peppers and corn are stunners though 😍
Thanks Maiju…… yes so disappointing, but yes you’re right, the spores may be on the fruit so will keep an eye! Fingers crossed. Onwards and upwards eh!
@theflyinggardener onwards and upwards is the only route we know 😂💚 no wonder that herbicides and pesticides became so popular for monocrop farmers. The blight has been a real issue for this year. I took out about 60l of blighted foliage of the tomatoes yesterday evening and there's plenty of the fuzzy spores on the stems already, too 🫣🫣 way too early. But we'll tackle it one pest or disease at the time 😉 Have a great weekend Will 💚🌿
That is such a shame! But you do have a lovely crop of green tomatoes and I hear that Richard and Paul’s channel have a recipe for green tomato curry that they love, and sunny weather is forecast for the second half of August🤞🤞🤞
Thank you……yes the sunny weather can’t come soon enough for me! 💪🏼🌱😁
Aw gutted for you. Hope you manage to ripen the fruits, they look great. X
I hope so too Jackie, I was impressed with the size of them! 💪🏼😁💚
What a shame Will'so sorry your return wasn't a better experience but still lots of lovely veg coming 😢 They will ripen though ,place in cardboard box with a couple of ripe bananas
Thanks Susie, yeah I usually put in brown paper pages on a windowsill with a banana 💪🏼😁💚
Oh Will I'm really sorry, fingers crossed you've salvaged the fruits 🤞🍅 💚xx
Thanks Roo! Yes absolutely gutting but have to move forward! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💚
@@theflyinggardener it's all we can do 💪 xx
Sorry to see this - we had similar but I managed to prune out most of it and it turned a corner, however I think it come down to the varieties and also a bit of luck on the weather conditions following the prune (it was quite dry for us) I did a RUclips video on our experience too.
Yes, definitely the weather conditions……you’re lucky if you were quite dry! Guess it’s one of those things! 🌱🍅
Shame about the blight Will but the sweetcorn and chillies look lovely.
Thanks Mags….onwards and upwards eh! 💪🏼😁🌱
Will 😢 the positive is that the fruits are ok 🍅 and you have so much more growing brilliantly like your corn 🌽 plus your marigolds are fabulous! 😊
Thanks Gemma….gotta run with the positives eh? 💪🏼😁💚
Definitely!
Ohhh Will I am absolutely gutted for you 😔😔hopefully you're able to salvage some of the fruit in the poly. Absolutely love your attitude and being able to see the positive! The peppers do look good and so do your marigolds. I really hope you're not feeling to disheartened and there is a silver lining...I guess...you have made a bit of space for something new to go in! Keep smiling 🥲🤗
Thanks so much…..yes just have to move forward eh.?…..yes I have some plans for the poly tunnel…..stay tuned! 😊💪🏼😁
😢😢😢 oh no Will so sad. We don’t normally get that here especially when it’s so hot and dry. Hopefully you can save some fruits 🤞🤞. I’d say happy gardening as my close but I’ll say sorry for your loss instead 🥰🥰, Ali
Thanks Ali……it is what it is……I think it’s all the rain and warmth, ideal for blight. x
@@theflyinggardener that’s the right attitude ❤️ onwards and upwards
Oh Will :( Let's hope the ones you've rescued ripen okay. I found all of my outdoor tomatoes had blight as I was tying them up yesterday - didn't dare step into the polytunnel afterwards for fear of spreading anything but am hoping they will be a little better protected. Everything else is looking wonderful though - just imagine how that first cob of corn is going to taste!
Thanks Jane, yes lots to be positive about and fruit is already starting to ripen!💪🏼😁💚 Sorry to hear your outdoor toms have been hit! Praying for your polytunnel! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💚🌱
In the USA we enjoy our green tomatoes. Many of us make fried green tomatoes as a special treat. You might enjoy them, too. You Tube has many recipes. Southern style or Italian style are both delicious.
Thanks Susan, I’ll take a look 😁💚🌱
Eek! I feel for you Will. I think this summer it will be hitting hard again earlier than normal all this bloomin' wet weather eh? They looked so good too. Fingers crossed they will ripen for you, not the same as on the plant but hopefully some good tomato sauce in the offing🤞
thanks Dawn….fingers crossed eh?💪🏼😁💚
What a night nightmare, I feel gutted for you 😕.
But on the plus side the peppers will have more light and space to grow so you could get a fabulous harvest from them.
Thanks Liz……yeah so strange that! This horrible weather eh? Sorry to hear yours were affected too. fingers crossed for the others! 💪🏼😁🌱
Thanks Adam….onwards and upwards eh! 💪🏼😁🌱
I watched this soon after you posted it but my heart was hurting so much i could not comment 😢 i feel so bad for you. you are the second gardener getting the dreaded blight which makes me think we r all going to get it 😢😢😢😢hopefully next will be better plus as you said we still have other plants 💔
Thanks Stella….fingers crossed you don’t get it! But we just move forward eh!? 🥺💚😁💪🏼
Oh Will! I am so sorry. Hopefully the fruits will ripen. Even the Cherokee Purples should ripen. I ripened over 300 green tomatoes last fall that I picked before the first frost and most ripened just fine over about a 6 week period. Are there any F1 disease resistant varieties with the heritage flavor in the UK that might be worth trying next year?
Thanks Zinnia….yeah I will definitely look into different varieties next year! 😁💪🏼💚
Gutted for you Will. I hope that you can get the fruits to ripen.
Me too Wendy….can only try eh? 💪🏼😁💚
Came across it tonight with my outdoor ones, it almost feels as if you've failed them 😥
Ahhh. I know the feeling! But you’ve done well to get them this far with the weather the way it’s been! 💪🏼
@@theflyinggardener Thanks mate, learning all the time!
Oh how annoying, such a shame but hopefully a lot of them will ripen at home for you. On the plus side you have some space to get some overwintering crops in there!! These things can be so annoying, blinking British weather, you can plan and be as diligent as you like but the weather always has other plans. Take care and your positive mental attitude is a credit to you.
Thanks Bethan! Yes I have plans for brassicas over the winter in the polytunnel! 💪🏼😁💚🌱 Onwards and upwards!
Oh no what a shame. 😢
🥺🥺🥺
O my goodness. What a horror to come home to!
Absolute nightmare! 🥺
@@theflyinggardener ☹️☹️☹️
Oh dear.what am awful sight to find on your tomatoes. So sorry.
Gutted for you hope they rippen for you just waiting for it to start non stop rain for weeks now stay positive
I know…..nightmare….but have to just move on I guess! 💪🏼🌱
Thanks Ann! 😁💪🏼🌱
Steve @Digwell greenfingers…recommends JBA Blight Guard. Natural product…says no blight for a few years since he’s s been using it.
Your taking it so well, I think I’d be very despondent….losing so much all at once.
Looking forward to seeing what you turn that open space into.
Hi Robin….I think you just have to think positive I guess. Yes, stay tuned for my new polytunnel plans! 💪🏼😁💚
Oh what a disappointing find, rescue fruits, remove infected plants and replant with new life ❤
Exactly my plan! 😁😁😁💪🏼💚🌱
Gutted for you Will! That's not what you want to be told. Ugh never mind . Rip out. Burn and move on will. Danny 🌱
Yup, all done! Thanks Danny 💪🏼😁💚
Definitely thinking the positive you haven't quite got the harvest you were hoping for (ripe tomatoes) but you still have a harvest (green tomatoes). I've never found that fruits off of blighted plants to open but you can make things like salsa verde etc with the green ones. Chin up
Thanks yes, I will give it a go ripening them….worth a try eh?! 💪🏼🌱
