    Ned you really need to quit smoking. I can see by Michelle's roll of the eyes when she said "cigarettes" that it really bothers her. You should quit so you can be around longer with her and enjoy life. Love the videos guys, keep it going.

      not to mention that smell of an ash tray will no longer be the smell of the day in your presence that non smokers so easily detect and hate. your so lucky she tolerates it.

      john Magill,
      Hi, it's pretty cool you must join dating sites but it's dangerous there because some are scammers.
      If you're still interested, maybe I can help you,

    You and Michelle are a really good example of how two people can live a pretty nice lifestyle in the Philippines for less than a $1000. It certainly can be done. One thing you pointed out that I really like is that it can be MORE expensive to live a western lifestyle here in the Philippines. But I have never understood why someone would totally want to do that.

  • @Redhawk85

    Nice co-sponsored video. I've become familiar with the Philippines over the last 5 years and visited twice. I really love it. I think your video is realistic, it was good for itemizing things to help people get an idea. The only thing I would bring up is it also depends on where you live. A big city like Manila will def cost more even living a filipino lifestyle compared to a more rural "Province." $1,000 a month is real and people budget, but may spend more initially as a Westerner feels the place out, learns where to find deals and gets acclimated from a Western lifestyle to a Philippines lifestyle. It REALLY helps to already know someone there you can trust. Thanks again for the great video.

    Based on what you have just revealed expenses for two people living in the PHILIPPINE particularly in Dumaguete City is averaging to $1,000 to 1,200 a month. My wife and I are retired working in the USA for 40 years. We received a US social security pension both totals to $5,000 after Federal and state taxes. We both have our 401k retirement savings from our previous employers and are invested on US Stock Market stock growth and dividends annually gross at $100,000 if we lived in the PHILIPPINES we are well off. We are both FILIPINO ancestry but are Naturaiized US Citizens and hold US Passports

    when you return to P.I. with your wife you can get a balikbayan visa for 12 months ,and thereafter a 6 month visa (balikbayan) ...or... you can open a bank account with $10,000 or so and be a resident... look into it.....do a shop in Hong Kong...return and get a 6 m. visa (min)....I've done it...the layover is $400 for a night, plus the shopping....

    living on a budget is good but within the budget, you must allow yourself to have the flexibility to enjoy, endulge yourself with a good meal and vacation trip beyond your local area, not a trip to local parks or beaches. living here or anywhere in the world is no different, make your life well rounded and the ability to do and enjoy life to the fullness. if not then you are just transforming from one rat box to another. anything is possible , careful and mindful budgeting will get you there

    My uncle lives in Darwin Australia. The weather is almost the same as in the Phils. He noticed that having his a/c on whenever he was in his office seemed to prolong the life of his computers. No a/c and his computers would pack it in after about 12-16 months. Gone through 3 computers in the last 4 years. His current computer is about 6 years old and still running strong. The heat really kills your computer... So try to keep them cool. Now as for smoking, I started vaping 21 months ago and NEVER looked back. I mix my own juice which brings my cost down to about AUD$30... And that's for me and the wife. But one thing I noticed when in the Phills earlier this year was that vaping in the Phils is rather expensive.... SO if you're trying to save money, as crazy as it is. It's cheaper to smoke ciggies than vape in the Phils.

    You are lucky to meet such a nice girl. I too am lucky in that my wife is from Myanmar (Burma). Met my wife when I was in Asia back in 1987 - 1988. Same thing basically, your wife looks to really honor you. I smoked when I first met my wife and she broke me from that habit straight away. lots of hard candy and scornful looks. There is honesty in your videos and I can see it in your eyes, I hope you have a wonderful family life and love forever.

    When I first moved here or to Dipolog city I air conditioned the whole house the first month. And it was 4000 more than the rent which was 16,000. It was a big nice two story house though. And numerous family members come into town and stayed with us, due the engagement I guess lol! The electric costs went down to averaging 10,000 to 12,000 after everyone finally found there way home.

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  8 лет назад

      Yep, electricity is twice the cost of that in the US. I think the highest our bill got was 3700. But that's just one room being cooled.

    • @stevenholmes3798
      @stevenholmes3798 8 лет назад

      Yeah our highest since we moved to Dumaguete last year was 4100. And that's just an ac in a one bedroom apt, but we cool the apt with that one ac and it runs 24 hours per day most days.

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  8 лет назад

    I think anything past 16 months requires trip to the main immigration office in Manila to extend your Visa. You can do that up to three years I believe. Other than that you can fly to Vietnam and stay 24 hours and come back and start your Visa all over again.

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  8 лет назад

      No trip to Manila. Can stay up to 3 years on a regular tourist visa. Vietnam does have good food, though....

    • @bobjones263
      @bobjones263 8 лет назад

      I thought after 16 months stay that it was mandatory that you go to Manila. for all future Visa extensions. I was told that by BOI in Manila that after 16 months I had to go to BOI main office for all Visa extensions in the future and yes the stay was 3 years.

  • @ThisisOurPhilippines
    @ThisisOurPhilippines 8 лет назад

    You make one point very clear. If you want to still live the same life style as you did where you came from, more than likely it will cost you more to live here. You have a very tight budget. I am almost afraid to do one for us as it seems to be way over what others are paying. I do have 3 kids in school (private) so that does eat a large portion of the budget we go on.

    Thanks for your update - Interesting breakdown of your expenses. I thought Cebu broadband was expensive; guess not. Went with 5Mbps Globe DSL Broadband and it's 1299.p a month, including a "free" landline phone. Plenty fast for emails, Facebook, RUclips, etc. Had Smart 4G LTE pocket wifi and it was a total joke from 7am to about 10pm - nothing would load. I spend almost double in USD a month than you do (Cebu vs Dumaguete), but $200 of that is rent and the rest is eating out and groceries, plus a budget of about $100-150/month to help various family members (lots of hospital visits recently; her dad is now in his 70's). I want to check out Dumaguete, as I've read and seen some nice things about the area. Thanks again for you updates.

      +Philippine Dreams you would have to set up a none invasive system. like a portable system that you can plug into an outlet with a back flow preventer. I make use of a small portable system mostly to low my bill. my bill before was P5,100. now its P3,600. I have 2 apartments. a downstairs and an upstairs. P3,000 each. the downstairs is my store and the upstairs is my home. as for your smoking, if you want to quit or reduce, then try a vaporizer. a good vape pen will run you about P2,500 - P3,500. the e-liquid is around P150 - P300 a bottle. pay close attention to how much nicotine is in it. moderate the heavy smoker I suggest 18mg - 24mg. I'm a smoker myself. if you want to save money on food, laundry, house cleaning products, and personal care products I suggest going to your local wholesale before going anywhere else. its not like the u.s. you can go to the wholesale as a regular customer. just get at least 5 or more of each item.

When people had to evacuate a platforms the barracuda's would all go crazy thinking the "reflective patches" were game fish and the result was not pretty. Ned you looked a little down in this video. I hope all is well.
    Great video. I always spend more than I think i will but I'm always in the vacation mode. Even when on vacation I budget how much I spend for the trip but I still spend to much and I'm no longer a bar hopper, like I was when I was 40 or 50 years old. The exception was my last vacation and it was to the Philippines first time there since 1989 and I spent 200 dollar less then I had budgeted. I still had a great time. I very much liked the Philippines. Not sure if I could live there for any extended time but may be a few months might work out.

    Hi Ned! I'm moving to Dumaguete tomorrow. I was wondering if you have idea of how much a rent for a house would cost down there? Thanks

  • @liabucalasummers4416
    @liabucalasummers4416 8 лет назад

    Why don't you buy a small lot and start building a small simple country house or you could even build a decent concrete bungalow knowing that you could afford a 10k house/appartment... oh well, just my thinking :)

    Hi Ned. See that you are still paying visa fees. Have you put any thought into the SRRV for military? Might be cheaper in the long run? Less hassle of going down every month or two to renew. At least your all day brownout so are scheduled. Here in Bacolod they just kind of spring them on you...

    I wonder if it is worth it to start 2 food carts in 2 different malls. Mactan area. Not sure if that will be enough for covering basic style of living. No smoking, no drinking or dinners out, aircon only at night, fan during day, 8 thousand is the rent for my house I must pay.

    Hi Ned. Are you still tracking about 1,000-1100 USD this year as well? I am making my plans to move over this summer and I am trying to gather as much information as I can. Right now I am trying to decide between Davao, Cebu, or Dumaguete.... Love your videos......

      Nathaniel Kidd
      You can try both Cebu and Dumaguete because it's just one island hop. It will only take you 2000.00 pesos for the land fare. Also those two have beautiful places.
      If you need some help or you have questions, maybe I can help you.

      Jilien Adanza thank u. It's good to know Dumaguete and Cebu are so close. My plan is to move there from California in November. Are you familiar with a typical budget needed for those areas? Thanks for responding

    • @jilienadanza2858

      In Dumaguete I'm familiar because that's the city of my province where I grew up, I've been in Cebu also because I took up my exam last year and I think I will compare all the expenses it's quite similar.

    I really enjoy your off the cuff style
    personally I would freeze up.
    in Canada I have a roommate.
    he pretty much takes care of all the bills plus $500 months.
    find the living 6 months out of the year in Southeast Asia.
    I don't need much I used to live on a sailboat.
    all I really need is a room in a window.
    this sounds bad but I'd like to find some expats.
    who set up the house and a couple of rooms.
    and be their roommates.
    something very simple
    just as long as it's my secure
    while I was in the Philippines I met people coming through my window trying to borrow my laptop.
    there's a strength in having someone watch your back.
    an AC unit in a tiny room with a throwaway scooter.
    I'm very much a minimalist
    my big one is the internet's
    my fingers twitching really bad
    without
    I could probably live in Jipne
    I have livedin them before there's lots of room for all my junk
    now that I think about it that's actually a good idea.
    thank you very much for your book
    it's great to see your perspective
    oh yeah and your composition the photos fantastic
    cheers Nick

    Ned, would you talk about Health Insurance costs? I know that if you live overseas more than >= 11 months you don't need to show coverage with Obamacare. So do you use PhilHealth? Thanks! Awesome videos as always ++

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  8 лет назад

      Yes. If you are out of the US for more than 11 months, you don't need US health insurance. Phil Health is like 80 bucks a year.

I have a women in my life now and sometime I will be going to Davao City province of del Sur Philippines . But I do not know yet when I go there yet .

      Yes, you can get very good apartments here anywhere in the Philippines for low cost. Low cost means to me 10,000 to 15,000 pesos or $215 to $320....even in an expensive area like Makati. Although doing that in Makati is not as easy. As far as Davao City, you will have no problems finding good inexpensive apartments in areas that you would probably like.
