In this video, I disucss my review of Heir to the Empire, the first book in the EU/Legends Thrawn Trilogy, as part of my Journey To Ahsoka Series. Enjoy!
In 1992 when I was 12, my mom got books for my brother and I to read. My brother got Jurassic Park and I got Heir to the Empire. Not only did this book reignite my love of Star Wars, but it also was the book that made me fall in love with reading in general.
I read this trilogy last year when I started becoming an avid reader I got the hardcovers for the books I got the anniversary edition of heir to the empire if you find it check it out each page has tidbits of interview information with Timothy Zahn and editors notes it was great and the audiobooks were very entertaining too when gaming I’ll throw on the audiobook occasionally sound effects music the whole 9 yards
I'm reading Heir to the Empire to my youngling right now. I'd read it myself at his age, but I'm enjoying doing it while he still wants me too, haha. Definitely agreed, not my absolute favorite book or series, but they are REALLY good.
Also I’m just starting to read heir to the empire 20th anniversary edition for the first time. So far I’m really enjoying it! Is the original and the 20th anniversary different or are they the same?/
@@johnnybhoff226 it is the same story, the 20th anniversary just has notes from Timothy Zahn. Regarding lighthearted/comedic books, it’s tricky to pull off in Star Wars. I’d suggest reading the Young Jedi Knights books, which have a levity to them. Also, Last Shot is incredibly funny and comedic…but it is highly controversial.
I’m like you I think it’s real good but it’s not my favorite. I do like a lot of the elements but I think the end of the trilogy never fit well with me
Interesting to hear that Thrawn is your favorite Star Wars character of all time! My personal favorite character is Obi-Wan Kenobi. I can’t wait to read this trilogy. Thanks for the recommendation!
HARD DISAGREE with the statement that it feels closest to the original trilogy. What about Shadows of the Empire? It's my number one fav since it's like the book embodiment of the OT
POSSIBLY my favorite Star Wars novel. For a long time Luke (and specifically of this era) and Thrawn were tied for my favorite Star Wars characters. Han was in number 3. Ahsoka eventually overlook them all!
Just finished this book tonight. Thought it was a solid 7/10, was good but considering how hyped up it was for me it’s yet to really hit - it’s book 1 of 3 though so I’m sure that’ll come as the story develops over the next two! Thrawn is brilliant, too.
Great review. I do slightly disagree with your opinion on Dagobah showing up. I thought it was a pretty cool concept when Luke saw the alternate past on the slave barge.
Still remember when I was younger I had the german audio dramas for the entire Thrawn trilogy on CD with a whole cast including the original trilogy german voices for Luke, Han and Leia. Probably listened to it a thousand times😅
I was thinking about holding off until I got caught up with high republic, but with these vids coming out I’m making a pit stop after I read out of the shadows to the OG thrawn trilogy! Absolutely love your vids, really provided a safe space to think about these books!! Also thanks for the spoiler warning!! I’ll def come back to view that section when I’m done with the book
I love this book and the trilogy. It's not perfect but nothing in the real life is. I have the 20th anniversary edition on display. I also like the extra small story in it.
Re read this a few months ago and waiting to see how Disney decides to interpret this classic. Have to say, enjoyed this trilogy more the second time around. Definitely fueled my energy to continue on with the EU series and see where it goes. Can't wait to check out the other SW books in this series Zahn has worked on. I hear ya about the pregnant Leia thing. Strange that writers can imagine a woman putting their unborn children in possible harms way but oh well. Otherwise the rest of it is fantastic!
I don’t know if you’ve been told or if someone has mentioned this to you, but the Thrawn trilogy mass market paperbacks, with legends banner but with the original covers, so the ones you have, are rather rare now.
I think Zahn did an amazing job with these books, he must’ve felt so much pressure writing these, hoping the fans will accept it. But (unlike the popular opinion under EU fans) I think these wouldn’t have made a good sequel movie trilogy. They are a bit dated or typical for late 80s, early 90s stuff, a bit cheesy, and there is less action in it than a movie should have. Also, I think Mara Jade is the epitome of late 80s cheese, you had to have a character like her back then, but maybe that’s just me. And he used the expression „ all right“ at the end of the sentence once too often … but as a whole, it’s a true classic, and you’re right, he nailed the main characters.

Jonathan, I love your enthusiasm in your videos. Keep up the good work.

Hey I’ve got a question. I’ve been looking for some light hearted Star Wars books that contain comedy and are funny. Do you have any recommendations?

Joruus C’baoth was such a well-written villain, who was, despite his madness, pragmatic in his more lucid moments.
Really enjoyed this book!
This video comes out at the perfect moment ! I'm finishing The Last Command tomorrow !

I love this trilogy. I'm so glad to finally hear your thoughts on each individual novel from the trilogy.

A good start to the trilogy and books two and three are much better!

Nice! Thank you!
Unrelated, but I just picked up a hardcover of Rising storm for only $5.80 on Amazon!
Nice. I hope it’s in good condition.
Same!!
