"I heard a lot of music in my mind and I didn't know what it was. And then I began to notice that young people are getting a little bit sleepy at mass or at worship. So I said: 'Let me obey what I hear in my ears'. I began to write some hymns that are very Jamaican in style. You know mento, calypso, ska, reggae all those rhythms I used. And I saw them really responding."
Father Richard Ho Lung
Always green and sunny Jamaica is indeed a tourist paradise on earth. And yet it is here that in 1981 the son of Chinese immigrants, Father Richard Ho Lung, begins his mission. He discovers Jamaica's darker more sinister side: poverty, destitution, a reality driven by narcotic gang warfare, and arms sales. Together with two friends he founds the Missionaries of the Poor (MOP), begins the task of helping King-ston's poorest inhabitants, and soon becomes an untiring voice for their cause. But not uniquely, for thanks to a musical talent, that showed itself at the beginning of his ministry with the Missionaries of the Poor, as well as thanks to a group of pro-fessional musicians, actors and volunteers, Father Richard initiates the 'Father Ho Lung & Friends' project. All proceeds to help support the Missionaries of the Poor charitable works: to raise funds for the running of his homes, the inner city hospices and his mission around the world, in the various countries that the missionaries of the poor now work in.
Father is a very gifted, spirtual, genuine man of God. I love his music. I love to listen to the brothers sing and play it. I can't wait to go back to Kingston.
where i can download the new album of the MOP?
In London a few years ago they had a public debate about whether the Catholic Church was a force for good. They should have shown this film.
I agree this would have been a wake up call for the Church!
