When it came out, Stan Rofe, a terrific Australian radio DJ, played it in its entirety on his late-night show, one side at a time, with minimal commentary in between the sides and almost no radio advertisements. I think of it as a masterwork--who else could encompass so many different styles with such acuity. They made it a double album because they could.

As fans, we were dead pleased to get a double album from our favorite band! A triple album wouldn't have been enough for us! We couldn't believe all the great material packed into two discs. We even loved Revolution 9! Yes, I said it. And as Paul said, shut up!

1:34 Double albums by The Mothers of Invention - "Freak Out" (June 1966) -, Cream - "Wheels of Fire" (June 1968) - and Hendrix - "Electric Ladyland" (October 1968) - were albums of note prior to the White Album, but you are right that it was rare.

5:21 George's songs should have been put on the album in place of Revolution 9.

In Chile the White Album was sold separately. Volume 1 and Volume 2.

This album is more than the sum of it's parts (like the Beatles themselves.) There are lots of jarring juxtapositions and mood swings so that when you get to the last two tracks, which are the wildest juxtapositions of all, they fit right in.

Interesting that Paul's Red Rose Speedway was originally intended to be a double album.

It could easily have been a triple album - in '68 the songs were definitely there! The Beatles were brave, but in the end not brave enough!

Disagree with the suggestion by some that it should have been one (or two) single album(s). The White Album's uniqueness resides in its being so rich and diverse it can't be trivialized - like a long, deep cosmic inner journey, illustrating perfectly just how far they'd gone since "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" only 5 years before.

The Beatles are the greatest of all time that's all there is to say simply the best! The White album the best of the best of double albums in my humble opinion! Not guilty sour milk sea and circles should have been on there squeeze it on! Charles Manson would have had a field day with the song Not Guilty could have changed history more than it already has! It's The bloody Beatles the White album shut up! Quoted by Paul and I agree!!!

Contractual obligations. (USSR and Prudence are great, in my opinion. And Birthday.)

The Beatles recording contract required 2 LP's and 4 separate singles per year. As they waited until December to release their first LP of 1968 it had to be a double album.

I think those terms were under the Beatles' previous recording contract, which expired in June of 1966. The 1967 agreement required that they deliver a certain number of songs or masters, a term which they fulfilled by September of 1969, if I correctly understood an article I read online. They were still bound to EMI until 1976, though, as a group or as solo artists. In an interview from the early 70s, John alludes to that fact. He says something like, 'Under the Beatles contract, I don't have to record anything anymore, but if I do, it has to be on EMI'.

I believe all their contracts required 2 LP's per year. And those 2 LP's went a long way to satisfying the 9/69 contract demands.
Incidentally the new contract they signed on 9/20/69 was the same meeting where, literally moments after signing the new contract, John quit the Beatles. I would love to have been a fly in the wall that day.

I've tried coming up with a single album track list & failed. The most I could ever edit out were maybe 4 or 5 songs.

For me it’s more about getting rid of the songs that are simply bad. The following are the songs that could have been easily deleted and would never have been missed: Wild Honey Pie, Piggies, Savoy Truffle, Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, Honey Pie, and Revolution No. 9.

1:34 Actually there was another double album before The White Album and right around the same time as Dylan's Blonde On Blonde, Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention's Freak Out. Cream and Jimi Hendrix both put out double albums around the same time as the White Album too.

I think the white album is a masterpiece of music for the simple reason is that it shows the versatility of the band... how good they are at covering all types of genres.. Rock blues ballad country etc... The only thing I think doesn't belong on the album is revelution 9

I will be the voice of dissent here, and say that this should have been a single album. Just like the old days, it would have had 14 songs. And the only songs that should have been released are ones the at included at least three of the Beatles playing on the track.
My version of the White Album:
    Side 1
    1. Back In The USSR
    2. Dear Prudence
    3. Obla Di, Obla Da
    4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    5. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
    6. Mother Natures Son
    7. Don’t Pass Me By
    Side 2
    1. Yer Blues
    2.Savoy Truffle
    3. Birthday
    4. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide
    5. Long, Long , Long
    6. Cry Baby, Cry
    7. Helter Skelter ( with “I’ve got blisters on my fingers “! ending

Firstly lets look at the Yellow Submarine album. The Beatles lovingly crafted every album except this one. They should have given this album the same care as the rest of their albums & made it great. Also this album should have been issued to coincide with the release of the film (mid 1968). Looking at it this way, some of the early recorded White Album tracks should have been on side 2 of YS. Leaving a single disc White Album to be released late 1968. Any left over good tracks could've been made into an EP. The left over (rubbish) tracks could then have been discarded.

If you tried to condense it into a single album you'd lose a lot of great songs. Almost every song is great. I mean, you can certainly get rid of Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9, but for the most part, it's a great album.

Oh, dahm, shut up (-as McCartney rightly says). It’s The Beatles’ White Album!
It is what it is, and we have what we have. You can theorize all you want to - but bottom line is, the artist(s) decides…

I'm glad someone else has said it. I've been told I'm not a "real Beatles fan", "not a music lover", or "I don't get it" by many for saying the same as you. Some of my favorite Beatles songs are on the White Album, but as a whole it's bloated, rushed, self-indulgent, and not their best as songwriters.... for 15 or so of the 30 tracks.
Abby Road & Revolver (Rubber Soul) are their absolute best for my listening pleasure. ...and their movie soundtracks.
But I accept it is regarded by many as their masterpiece, along with Sgt. Pepper, which is not all it's hyped up to be as well. Some of my favorites are on THAT album too. I stand firm with my opinion though. They did NOT ever make a bad album. I'm not on board with the White Album parade, unfortunately, as far as it being a masterpiece, or their best.
