@@SubmittedAndReadable if you're playing not based on defense, strategies that are built on other ways of survival (dodging, immunity chance, regen...) usually include different armors. Sometimes even pre hardmore all class armor sets like the crimson armor.

I just did a mage playthrough, spectre armor and auto-pause literally turns you into Dio, you just open your inventory, it pauses the game, you switch to mask and heal yourself to full HP.

I am running summoner right now in calam, but I have the innate gorilla tendencies of a melee users and will always run head first at the boss with a big ass whip and sword.
@@expertoflizardcorrugation3967 Felt that as the Melee Tank of my party until I became a summoner for better farm potential. I was constantly getting in over my head in certain fights to the point where it was too late to back out. Sometimes even after popping a potion.
It only gets worse in Master mode when defense just gets even more shit as everything beefs up. Don't get me wrong, defense is helpful, but it can only mitigate so much damage compared to just... dodging the attacks. Basically the moment you get better movement options than Hermes boots and a grappling hook, defense starts to drop off in viability.
@@acake6654 I found that out on my most recent master mode playthrough, where I was melee with around 60 defense pre mechs. I then lost half my health to a prime bomb while fighting skeletron prime (it did a bit more than 200 dmg). I was confused on why it did so much, searched up on the wiki the base damage, and its 240 on master mode. 60 defense was pretty much meaningless

This is coming from someone who does all these things. Also the best mage accessories unless every other class you probably won't get your hands on till near endgame. Finding the little flower component to the mana flower just doing other stuff was complete luck. And even if you farm for it I remember that plant being on the rarer side of spawn rate.

Yea hardmode melee is just anything but melee. I actually cannot use the Daybreak because it feels like cheating. It’s literally a THROWING spear, and of all classes, it’s MELEE. And also, yo-yo’s are not melee. Boomerangs are not melee. Vampire knifes are not melee. The shadowflame knife is not melee, and having a sword (having its entire purpose to be a close-ranged weapon) shoot projectiles that can cover your screen, doesn’t feel right. And the Zenith is. not. melee.
And like half of them don't even do that, making them useless against most bosses by default. Unfortunately Terraria is simply not designed with actual melee combat in mind, even with those buffs you wouldn't be able to get within attacking distance of most bosses without becoming completely unable of avoiding damage and buffing the class to the point that's not an issue would probably just make it broken.
I mean, Terraria, at it's heart, is a game where every enemy deals contact damage and most bosses aren't affected by knockback. TRUE True Melee as in "You swing a sword and only deal damage with the sword's sprite" was never realistically going to be a viable thing unless you buff melee to such absurd levels that a melee player can literally stay inside the boss hitbox the entire fight and facetank all the contact damage. Even if you did, that would just not be fun. I think the whole slashing energy wave thing they added to the melee weapons they reworked for 1.4 is the right way to go though. It's a compromise between true melee and the "sword staff" as it were, where you need to get closer than other classes but can still maintain enough distance to react to the boss's movement. I hope they rework some of the other more boring projectile firing staff swords like Meowmere and Seedler though. I had a lot of fun going all RULES OF NATURE on WoF and the Destroyer with Night's Edge and Excalibur in my most recent playthrough... But I still had to concede and use a boomerang for the Twins because you literally cannot catch up to Retinazer with the mobility options you have at that stage of the game.
I can imagine "melee" in this game a synonym to "physical damage tanker", lots of good melee dmg weapons aren't that long ranged, you're (now, gladly) often rewarded with double ticked hits while in close combat with projectile swords, high defense, and there's some aggro items. In a party, melee it is the class most similar to a support role, you'll build for the aggro and tankyness, jumping around and avoiding getting hit while your team do the massive damage as they're the dps classes, your main job is to survive as you wont be as punished as them for getting struck bc of defence

I mean, it just merged into ranged. You can even use shroomite head piece that buffs any other ranged weapons than aren't bullet and arrow consuming. I assume they buff throw a blessing too

As a calamity infernos melee player I can not confirm that tanking bosses or enemies is possible you can get 2 shot by basically any boss past poltergeist

Exactly, and they are also super hard to get. I think the best bullets are explosive, crystal, ichor and venom bullets, because they can be bought or farmed effortlessly, while still being very practical.

I mean, it just merged into ranged. You can even use shroomite head piece that buffs any other ranged weapons than aren't bullet and arrow consuming. I assume they buff throw a blessing too

@@_.SnowyNights._Ranger main here. May I interest you in Venom Bullets? Why worry about needing to keep bullets on the target when it’ll take at most 2-3 to kill any common foe. Single if it’s a crit. And amazing boss killing potential.

@@Fusion1157 It effectively doesn't, the regen rate while moving is about a quarter of the rate while still. And during timed bosses that matters.
@@IGSA101 it might seem hard to dodge long enough for a big stealth strike hit but it isn't that hard sure its harder than a normal playstyle but it isn't impossible

Exactly, and they are also super hard to get. I think the best bullets are explosive, crystal, ichor and venom bullets, because they can be bought or farmed effortlessly, while still being very practical.
