Agreed, base Terraria lore is wild, and Calamity cranks it up even more. Not that the lore being wild is a bad thing, it's just that most of the lore comes from outside the game.

Calamity has a deep and complex lore so let me keep it simple.
The boss you're fighting here is Supreme Calamitas, The Brimstone Witch. The song is describing her thoughts and feelings about the state of the world.
The god of this world, Yharim, has brought chaos and destruction on it, hence the name "Calamity". You're goal is to kill him to bring peace to the world.
At the end of the fight, Calamitas expresses hope that you might be powerful enough to destroy Yharim, as she herself has lost hope.
There's a whole bunch of stuff I left for the sake of simplicity, but that's should give you an idea of what this mod is

    • @silverstar1614

Lyrics, as posted on DM Dokuro's bandcamp
    =Grief - Perspective of Calamitas=
    No more holding back
    They'll wish for demise
    They thought they were invincible
But you could see through their hollow lies
You've seen how far they've come
    How many they've slain
You will gladly tear their limbs apart
All before they start to kill again
They were seen as a threat by the moment the dragon was killed by their hand
Now you're sent to demolish the foe upon your ruler's despondent demand
Something tells you they have scaled in their power
Should they win, it shall be your final hour
But you still have control of the fight
If they mess up, you might have a chance to destroy them
But is this the right path that you've taken?
Are your morals correct, or mistaken?
Are you sure you want to lose your mind
From a legend whose power could salvage mankind?
    =Lament - Perspective of the Player=
    You have known for certain
Your path is one of justice
All those who try to obstruct shall have paid the ultimate price
    Yet, upon inspection
    Your foe is overwhelming
But you remember what she tried to sacrifice
    Signs of self-disappointment start infiltrating
(These putrid emotions begin to take control)
    Symptoms of paranoia begin invading
(Such petty emotions have sabotaged your soul)
    Your mental fortitude is fading
Losing trust, ending friendship, and rage escalating
Right on the road to your sadness
Watching closely as courage turns into madness
Are you sure you'd want to lose your life
From a witch who had caused you nothing but strife?
    =Epiphany=
    The end has come;
    The witch and the prophecy
Deciding fates with the world on the line
    Who shall emerge
    From the ashes of calamity?
How shall this fable end through these legends intertwined?
    End of reasoning
    Carnage and pain
    A feral sense of dominance
As all the blood melts into the rain
    A clash of history
    In blood, sweat and tears
This war will cause our world to change
And will be remembered through the years

Fascinating that you mention ascending and descending, "flying in the sky" is how you described it. At this point in the fight (since this is a boss theme), you're being chased by very big projectiles and have to fly in slow circles for the rest of the fight to keep them from catching up to you, and the music follows that gameplay loop, you can even hear that circular motion within those parts you were describing and I think it's so cool! You can even hear the projectiles come in at 9:07, and it's incredible that even someone who has never seen the fight picked up on it. As a couple other comments already pointed out, there's lyrics and you should definitely look them up, it gives a lot more context to the actual fight. Love the video, great work as always!

    • @noaburr
      @noaburr Год назад +29

Not just that, but the ascension and descension fits in a less literal sense too. As you go through the phases the boss alternates between vulnerable and invulnerable states, forcing the player to fight hard and deal as much damage as they can before they're whittled down, and retreating and trying to survive the onslaught as the boss becomes immune to damage. The whole fight becomes a pendulum oscillating in opposite directions as Calamitas and the player alternate between hunter and hunted.

The mod completely changes the game and the level of effort that went and continues to go into it is astounding, gameplay, story, and lore wise but none more so (in my opinion) than DM DOKURO's contribution to the music. The music of calamity breathes new life into the game in a way only music can and there are so many tracks worth looking at there. This is the final bosses theme and its epic composition reflects just how truly momumental the fight is. Your observation about ascending and descending is on point as jumping and flying around is a hallmark of Terraria combat. So happy you took a look at this song and I can't think of a better way to have broken up my otherwise monotonous Monday. Great job as always man, look forward to more

to be honest i think calamity would be far better off as its own thing, separate from terraria.
the music and story is cool, but if we look past that and see it as just a terraria mod it's actually not that great
calamity's bosses are poorly designed, with a majority of the difficulty coming from seemingly random floating projectiles as opposed to unique attacks that align with the boss' theme like certain mods such as polarities do it
the progression, for the most part, i think is alright. some weapons and materials are quite grindy to acquire such as life alloys that just require mining or grinding the ravager over and over. i think the early-hardmode rework was very well done, though. it was very enjoyable.
the rogue class feels a little unnecessary, since a lot of thrown melee weapons such as the daybreak already fit the category of "rogue" almost perfectly. not to mention how ridiculously overpowered a lot of weapons from the class are.
calamity devs limit their own work by putting it within the boundaries of a terraria mod, which is quite a poor medium to use in order to tell a story. they have talent and it shows, i just feel like it's being used in the wrong place.

That made it much more about strategy and not just skill. Plus it would charge you much more aggressively then, so it felt like a real threat. Now it just sorta moves close to you and you have to make sure you don’t let it get to close. Pretty big downgrade in my mind.

What I like is that the music simulteniously talks to two persons. The choir section is meant to adress the boss (Supreme Calamitas) as her confidence becomes more and more shaken the further the fight progresses.
Meanwhile the solo singer talks to the player, trying to shake them as much as possible, while the player becomes more and more anxious to stay alive, as the fight progresses towards the end. The singer clearly tries to steal the end of the fight hype, hoping to replace it with fear of dying so close to the end.

I'm sure others could explain it better but at its core Terraria is an adventure game centred around resource management and crafting systems. You defeat bosses, take their loot, explore the massive world, and search for rare materials so you can defeat harder bosses. Also found it funny that you mentioned the idea of the chords wavering up and down as that pretty accurately describes the character's movement during boss fights, desperately flying up and down to avoid projectiles.
The Calamity mod is a modification for Terraria which adds more than double the content of the base game. Most of the music in the mod was done by DM DOKURO as a labor of love with tracks ranging from EDM to orchestral metal and even synthwave. The mod is focused on providing the player with difficult-but-rewarding encounters and stretching the game well past the base game limitations.

-"The Devourer of Gods (Nonstop Mix)", it's a song about the same length as this, just that it's 3 or so tracks stitched together to make up one complete track, more specifically, it's the tracks "Servants of the Scourge", "Scourge of the Universe", and "Universal Collapse" put together, they're all good on their own, but I recommend the Nonstop Mix for the proper experience

So, side note, the choir is actually singing lyrics as well. It's just very difficult to make out without the lyrics.
Every shift in the song's tone represents a change in phase, and on the original video on DM Dokuro's channel, this is represented by the colour shifting and the name of the section of the song appearing on screen. The final section with the reverberating bells and piano is the finale of the battle, where Calamitas, the Witch of Calamity, surrenders, commits to a small monologue, and waits for you to finish her off.

Something to note about the song phases:
(The choir is actually speaking in English)
Phase 1 - The choir follows Calamitas’ point of view, commenting on her thoughts and reservations/doubts about the player (and herself!) and how much of an unstoppable force they’ve become:
“You will gladly tear their limbs apart / All before they start to kill again”
“But is this the right path that you’ve taken? / Are your morals correct or mistaken?”
Phase 2 switches to the player’s point of view, while Calamitas cranks up the heat by attacking faster and summoning her brothers. Despite being a god-killing monstrosity by now, Supreme Calamitas is proving herself to be on par with, or even BETTER than you. The player begins to have doubts, and fear starts welling up in the back of their mind, that they might not make it out alive:
“Signs of self-disappointment start infiltrating / Symptoms of paranoia begin invading / Your mental fortitude is fading”
Phase 3 is when the player gets ahold of themselves and Calamitas starts to understand that she’ll seriously die if she doesn’t give this fight everything she’s got. She becomes desperate, releasing every summon and firing as many brimstone fireballs as she can muster in an attempt to kill the player. The choir is now taking note of the scale of the battle, how it’s like a war between two deities:
“End of reasoning / Carnage and pain
A feral sense of dominance / As all the blood melts into the rain
A clash of history / In blood, sweat, and tears
This war will cause our world to change / and will be remembered through the years…”
And Phase 4 is when, having put her all into the battle to no avail, Calamitas gives up, admitting her defeat.

So, this song plays during one of the last bosses you ever fight in the mod, at least for now. The boss herself is a witch named Calamitas and her magic is apparently strong enough to dissipate part of an ocean, and make a portion of hell unlivable. Like, actual hell full of fire, she managed to make an entire section of hell even worse.
But she didn't do these things willingly. She had been taken captive by another character from the mod, Yharim. She was essentially broken down by Yharim and used as his personal magical executioner. Eventually she gets free and runs from Yharim, trying to just ignore everything and live the rest of her life in fear. Until the player character, simply called the Terrarian in the mod, summons her to fight them. This theme then plays as Calamitas tries to kill the player, until eventually her will is broken down and you win.
The boss fight is hard but rewarding imo, and the theme changes and loops depending on what phase you're on.

YES I WAITED LIKE 6 MONTHS FOR THIS! LESSSS GOOOOO! THANK YOU MAN!
A little bit of explanation is needed to fully enjoy this song however:
First of all the entire choir is made up of english lyrics (very hard to tell for me at least) that give the song much more meaning than just interpreting it as "video game choir".
The lyrics are structured in 3 different parts that seperate the song (noticable because of the major tonal shifts).
    Lyrics go as follows:
    -=Grief=-
    No more holding back
    They'll wish for demise
-- This first chapter is written from the witches/(bosses) point of view telling how she was sent to kill the player (who was at that point already known as an absolutely manic, undefeated killing machine across the world) against her will and the doubts she has regarding whether she can defeat him/her (the player) or whether it's even the morally correct thing to do for the world at large.
    -=Lament=-
    You have known for certain
Your path is one of justice
All those who try to obstruct shall have paid the ultimate price
    Yet, upon inspection
    Your foe is overwhelming
But you remember what she tried to sacrifice
    Signs of self-disappointment start infiltrating
(choir: These putrid emotions begin to take control)
    Symptoms of paranoia begin invading
(choir: Such petty emotions have sabotaged your soul)
    Your mental fortitude is fading
Losing trust, ending friendship, and rage escalating
Right on the road to your sadness
Watching closely as courage turns into madness
Are you sure you'd want to lose your life
From a witch who had caused you nothing but strife?
-- This second part speaks for the player. The choir starts singing of the player's path for justice, defeating powerful foes to save the world but when the singer (who is supposed to represent the player-character) kicks in the tale turns around full 180* and reveals the player's own doubts about how all the killing they'd done on their path for self-righteousness can never be justified and wears them down.
    -=Epiphany=-
    The end has come;
    The witch and the prophecy
Deciding fates with the world on the line
    Who shall emerge
    From the ashes of calamity?
How shall this fable end through these legends intertwined?
    End of reasoning
    Carnage and pain
    A feral sense of dominance
As all the blood melts into the rain
    A clash of history
    In blood, sweat and tears
This war will cause our world to change
And will be remembered through the years
-- This entire part is played twice. It represents the climax of the piece telling of the epic battle between the player and the witch who are currently fighting over the future of the world and their ideals.
-=The final 4th part also has a name but I forgot it and it's not listed in the original description so well...=-
This part is only the last minute or so with the trademark DMDOKURO bells (tm). I'd guess it represents the release from struggle for the witch and the players mourning for her death knowing that if he fails now going forward it will have been in vain.
(we'll just leave out the part where the witch becomes a npc after the fight ok... lore-wise she's dead at that point).
    Hope this was helpful!

i think the best way for this to be presented in a concert hall would be the curtains open to reveal the piano and singers and stuff but stop half way and then right before the electric guitar starts they open the rest of the way to reveal a dude who looks like a classic electric guitar guy with long hair and a leather jacket and ripped jeans with sunglasses on and the drums and stuff and then they start playing.

DMDokuro is so fucking talented, I'm still a bit mad the community ended up chasing him away from Calamity altogether. The mod definitely wouldn't be as popular as it is without his music being so iconic. I still get goosebumps listening to this, Yharon's theme, DoG's theme, even lesser ones like Crabulon, Plaguebringer, Polterghast still have absolute bangers

While DM DOKURO considers Calamity soundtrack as a great curse, the music he made for many of bosses are true works of art, into which he poured his heart and soul. All of it, as you noted, to tell a story by means available to him. Perhaps you might be interested to check more of his works in the future. Not necessarily to react to them, but perhaps just to enjoy it.

Part of the thing that you sorta caught on to is that in game, the boss fight is cut into 4 different phases and for each phase a different part of the song plays. The final section is the boss giving up and talking to you. She sits there and talks, and you're forced to just wait.

I really like that you said at the end it feels like the dust settles , and things are just falling . Ashes , lots and lots of ashes in this case . This track is the Brimstone Witch, Calamitas’ theme , and she has laid waste to many of the biomes featured in the mod - and when I say laid waste , I mean leveled pretty much . Like the biome , the brimstone crags , where the Brimstone Elemental is one of few survivors in the biome , hence the title of her track , “Left Alone” . Calamitas is so cool , and the fact that you described it so perfectly without being informed about calamity mod is so cool to me , absolutely love how in depth you went in the video , great work ! 🙏🏻

  • @sauldemo666
    @sauldemo666 Год назад +2

the church bell means "resignation" is the part where calamitas knows she is about to die and stops moving so the player can kill her without resistance, you literally went through the whole game to get to that moment where you have at your feet the final boss and you realize that he also has feelings and a little sanity in his mind (calamitas suffers from mental disturbance and is controlled by forbidden dark magic so in the whole fight you fight against someone corrupted by power).

DM Dokuro's work is probably some of my favorite part of the Calamity's mod, and while i will not go into extended detail on the comment section of a bystanders, it really pains me to see how much the community of this mods fandom really burnt him and others who spent time working on this mod, and from what i recall of the time, Stained, Brutal was written at a very, turbulant time. I highly suggest giving a listen to more of Dokuro's work, he's made some great peices

YOOOOOO I’ve been waiting for this!!! I’m so happy you actually took my suggestion.
People go crazy for Roar of the Jungle Deagon (understandable), but in my opinion, this is Calamity music at its peak. The combining of all these different genres and making them all come together in a way that works both in and out of the game is just brilliant. Truly a masterpiece, and shows just how much freedom you can have when writing a piece for a video game.

To follow-up on this, this is going to involve spoilers for the Calamity mod, but basically, this music is what plays during the current final boss, Supreme Calamitas (they plan to add more bosses after her, but for now, she’s the final boss). Her lore is complicated, but to put it simply, she is only fighting you because she feels like that is the only choice she has. She knows she’s fighting on the wrong side, but it’s the only thing she knows, so she fights you. The ending bit is much more somber because during that part of the fight, she isn’t fighting anymore. She knows you’re stronger than her, so she gives up and let’s you strike her down. It’s kinda sad, because truthfully, she never wanted to fight you in the fight place, but she did it anyway because it was her duty. And in the end, she doesn’t want to die, but knows it’s the only way forward for you, so she lets you finish the job.

    • @JosepiThe13th
      @JosepiThe13th Год назад

The lyrics for that middle section, called “Grief” goes like this:
      Signs of self-disappointment start infiltrating.
      Symptoms of paranoia begin invading.
      Your mental fortitude is fading.
Losing trust, ending friendships, and rage escalating.
Right on the road to your sadness,
Watching closely as courage turns into madness,
Are you sure you want to lose your life
From a witch who has caused you
      Nothing but strife?
To me, I believe it’s speaking to Calamitas. Maybe her conscience or something telling her that she shouldn’t be fighting this fight. But honestly, it’s up to interpretation, and that’s what I like about it.

I had a passing thought earlier today about you listening to some of the Calamity Mod OST on this channel, and here we are!
I would absolutely LOVE to see more of DM Dokuro's Calamity Mod OST on this channel. There are so many amazing songs on that soundtrack that to suggest a single one is actually really difficult.
That said, if I had to point out some specifically, there are a set of songs that link together and build up to the theme of one of the final bosses of the mod; The Devourer of Gods. You can find all the themes in order on Dokuro's channel, as "The Devourer of Gods (Nonstop Mix)". Would love to see you check it out some time.
Anyway, great video as usual, keep doing what you're doing!

Yout hit it right on the head with a lot of your analysis. This is basicly a 5 maybe 7 stage boss fight with both intermissions of boss invulnerabillity and a part of summoning two brothers with names synnonymous of Calamity. And the ending is basicly the boss letting you finish it off, cause of... Lore
