What a wonderful video! So calming to watch and so helpful. I have just purchased a kit from you. My blind measures 95cm drop. Please could you assist with dowel pocket spacing? Thank you so much.
Hi Nicole, Thanks for your feedback and thanks for shopping with us! This is the spacing needed between your dowels: bottom measurement would be 13cm, then allow 5cm for the rod pocket, then 25cm, 5cm, 25cm, 5cm and 32cm + an extra 15cm for turnings, if you cut your lining to 125cm. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Great video. You make it look very easy. I would like to know what type of thread you have used. It looks quite thick in comparison to the normal thread you can buy. Also what kind of needle for the hand sewing. Thank you.
Hi, So glad you enjoyed the video! We use a standard coats thread, just the bigger reals. The needles that we use are either a size 5 or 7 depending on the fabric. But we personally find the no 7 better as it’s a bit longer. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Best video I’ve seen on precision. Are the vertical sides of the lining hemmed before the 5cm dowling pockets are sewn? Would also love to know the maths for working out spacing for dowling pockets. Thank you.
Hi Caroline, Thanks for your great feedback! We iron the side of the lining about 1.5cm down the sides and then it's secured in place when you hand sew down the sides. No need to sew it down beforehand. Hope that helps! If you reply to this comment with the drop size of your blind then we can work out the spacing for you and send it back over. Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Love the detailed instructions of this video and watching your skills. I would like more clarity on how you measure out for the dowels in the lining as this, for me, is the hardest part...how to calculate where the go. Do you have a separate video on this?

This is the spacing needed between your dowels: bottom measurement would be 14cm, then allow 5cm for the rod pocket, then 27cm, 5cm, 27cm, 5cm and 47cm, this allows an extra 13cm for turnings when putting on the Velcro. Cut lining to 130cm. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Hi, Thank you for your kind words! Below are the measurements for your 1.83cm blind: The bottom measurement would be 16cm, then allow 5cm for the rod pocket, then 32cm, 5cm, 32cm, 5cm, 32cm, 5cm, 32, 5cm, 37cm + an extra 15cm for turnings, making the top part 52cm. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I have suggestions about closing the channel. You could use snap fastener to close one end. Then when the curtains need to be washed, we can remove the rod and put them in washing machine. It should be able to wash?
Hi, We're glad you enjoyed this video! If you're concerned about cleaning then we'd recommend a damp cloth for small marks, and for a full clean we'd recommend getting them professionally dry cleaned. However before dry cleaning, it's important to check that the fabric thats been used is able to be cleaned in this manner. There are a few points of stress on a roman blind so we'd recommend sticking to the usual method of securing the rods to ensure the quality of the blind. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Would you mind putting in the Comments, as a "pinned comment" exactly what your cut dimensions were, and what your finished dimensions were? I can figure out the hem dimensions from those two. Thank you so much. Lovely tutorial.
Hi, The finished width was 71cm and the cut width was 83cm, making the turn in for the side hems 6cm. The finished drop was 100cm and the turn in for the hem at the bottom was 8cm. Hopefully this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Why did you measure/cut from the centre of the fabric. You ended up with two waste strips from either side, and then you cut off more from the turnings. I don’t understand. It seems you ended up with a lot of wasted fabric when you could have ended up with a usable piece. Please explain. Thank you.
Hi, The reason why we've shown this technique is so that if you've got a patterned fabric you can pick where you want the pattern to be in the middle of your blind. Also, if your blind was wider than the width of your fabric, we'd recommend that you have your joining seams at either sides instead of in the middle. Hope this helps, let us know if you have anymore questions! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Makes sense to me. I’m glad the question was asked and that you’re showing this in the video because I have three windows in my kitchen above my sink that I have to make three separate Roman shades for, and the fabric is patterned. I need to make the design pattern fall across all three shades properly. Thank you!
Hello I am planning on buying a blind kit from yourselves this week! I have all my fabrics but am struggling to work out the lining for the pockets. Would you mind helping me? My length of drop is 179cm

Hi, Thank you for your kind words! We'll look at getting that lining video created for you. We'd recommend any of the blackout linings that can be found on our website (www.justfabrics.co.uk/linings/) except from the bonded one for roman blinds. Hi, Yes the headrail comes with screws and plugs for wall or ceiling fix. This is the spacing needed between your dowels: bottom measurement would be 14cm, then allow 5cm for the rod pocket, then 27cm, 5cm, 27cm, 5cm and then 45cm. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Hi Mary, Thanks for your feedback! This is the spacing needed between your dowels: bottom measurement would be 14cm, then allow 5cm for the rod pocket, then 26cm, 5cm, 26cm, 5cm, 26cm and 5cm to end. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics

What if you use that front fabric to be lining? Then the front and the back look the same, people from out side see the printed fabrics instead of plain color?
Hi, This is what our workroom recommends: Bottom measurement would be 13.5cm then allow 5cm for the rod pocket. The next measurement would be 24cm, then 5cm again for rod pocket, then another 24cm and the final 5cm rod pocket. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
I may be missing the point but does knotting below the toggles not stop the cord from pulling through? Is that not what it’s meant to do for child safety?
Hi, We only do one single knot. This will still pull through the toggle if a child pulls or gets caught up in it, because we have the other safety devices on the blinds. These are the breakaway clips and the wheel that pulls out from the chain. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Hi, The purpose of the stab stitch under the ring is to hold all the fabric layers together. It’s under the ring because this is where the cord goes through, hence the pulling up and down of the blind where the tension is. Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Hi, Yes they do, we have an installation guide available on our website here: www.justfabrics.co.uk/customer-service/hanging-guides/. Let me know if you need anymore help. Kind regards, Just Fabrics
Good video but instructions measuring for the rod pockets would have been useful. I ordered the blind kit which came with the rods. It would be useful to have the child safety clips and rings included. An essential and inexpensive piece of kit which was missing. Also it's not easy to source the sew on clips you show.
Hi, Thank you for your feedback and for purchasing a roman blind kit. We've recently added instructions for the rod pocket measurements into the description of the video, here is the link for that: www.justfabrics.co.uk/inspiration/how-to-make-a-high-quality-lined-roman-blind. Unfortunately you're right, our kits don't provide the child safety clips and rings. They're available on our website but including them in the kit would be useful so we'll look for a solution to change that. The sew on clips can be found from Amazon and a few other sellers online. We'll also look to supply these in the future. If you need any more help them please let us know. Kind regards, Just Fabrics

Poosible a silly question - why do you cut your blind from the centre of the fabric and waste a thin panel on each side, rather than cutting it from/close to the edge on one side?
Hi, Not a silly question at all! The reason why we've shown this technique is so that if you've got a patterned fabric you can pick where you want the pattern to be in the middle of your blind. Also, if your blind was wider than the width of your fabric, we'd recommend that you have your joining seams at either sides instead of in the middle. Im wondering if your headrails can be ceiling fixed? Also my blind is 174cm wide by 102 cm drop. Please can you advise on dowel spacing.? Thankyou
Hi,
Yes the headrail comes with screws and plugs for wall or ceiling fix. This is the spacing needed between your dowels: bottom measurement would be 14cm, then allow 5cm for the rod pocket, then 27cm, 5cm, 27cm, 5cm and then 45cm. Hope this helps!

Hi Mary,

What if you use that front fabric to be lining? Then the front and the back look the same, people from out side see the printed fabrics instead of plain color?
Hi,
This could be done if its your preference, our method shows the industry standard for making a roman blind with lining.

Hi, I have a drop of 92.5cms please can you advise on spacing between dowels?
Hi,
This is what our workroom recommends: Bottom measurement would be 13.5cm then allow 5cm for the rod pocket. The next measurement would be 24cm, then 5cm again for rod pocket, then another 24cm and the final 5cm rod pocket. Hope this helps!

I may be missing the point but does knotting below the toggles not stop the cord from pulling through? Is that not what it’s meant to do for child safety?
Hi,
We only do one single knot. This will still pull through the toggle if a child pulls or gets caught up in it, because we have the other safety devices on the blinds. These are the breakaway clips and the wheel that pulls out from the chain. Hope this helps!

Hi, just wondering what the purpose of the stab stitch under the rings is?
Hi,
The purpose of the stab stitch under the ring is to hold all the fabric layers together. It’s under the ring because this is where the cord goes through, hence the pulling up and down of the blind where the tension is.

Just Fabrics
Thank you very much
What do i do if the cord on the chain side of the cassette is 13cm from the edge, and the other side is 10cm away from the edge?
We'd advise that you make both sides 13cm as they need to match. Hope this helps!

Do the head rails have to be screwed into the wall?
Hi,
Yes they do, we have an installation guide available on our website here: www.justfabrics.co.uk/customer-service/hanging-guides/. Let me know if you need anymore help.

Good video but instructions measuring for the rod pockets would have been useful. I ordered the blind kit which came with the rods. It would be useful to have the child safety clips and rings included. An essential and inexpensive piece of kit which was missing. Also it's not easy to source the sew on clips you show.
Hi,
Thank you for your feedback and for purchasing a roman blind kit.

Most comprehensive tutorial, I've seen. Full marks for that. One suggestion. The music in background is very distracting. Difficult to hear what you are saying.

Thank you for your kind words and we'll take your feedback on board with our future videos. Let us know if theres any other videos you'd like to see from us.

In the Kitchen is there Instructions on how to calculate the Rod pockets for the Lining.
Hi Georgina,
We're happy to calculate your rod pocket measurements for the lining if you send us over the drop of your blind.

Poosible a silly question - why do you cut your blind from the centre of the fabric and waste a thin panel on each side, rather than cutting it from/close to the edge on one side?
Hi,
Not a silly question at all! The reason why we've shown this technique is so that if you've got a patterned fabric you can pick where you want the pattern to be in the middle of your blind. Also, if your blind was wider than the width of your fabric, we'd recommend that you have your joining seams at either sides instead of in the middle. Hope this helps, let us know if you have anymore questions!

Cannot for the life of me see the details of the safety clip re quality of the close up and can’t see how or what part you sew .. apart from that it’s a great vid x
Hi Diane,
We're sorry you can't see that bit in more detail, we'll ensure all future videos like this are clearer. If there's anything I can help with then please let me know.

Nicely demostrated , However too much minute details is distracting and looses interest
Hi,
Thank you for your feedback. We included lots of detail to ensure the final lined roman blind is of a high quality; I'd recommend using the time stamps in the description if you're looking to skip to a specific part of the make.
