I have a bachelor's in mechanical engineering. I tutored mathematics up through multivariable calculus in school and graduated with honors. Unfortunately, I had zero luck finding a job, so I resorted to living in my car and became very depressed. After very nearly freezing in my sleep last winter, I decided to try starting my own business offering mobile automotive diagnostics and electrical repairs. Over the past summer, I did 100+ jobs, and was able to figure out/fix every single one. I've saved up thousands of dollars and have substantial income, but I don't have recent rental history or regular pay stubs, so I still can't get a place. I spoke to some kind of social worker person who initially said she could help me, but when she found out that I had been homeless for nearly a year, she changed her tune and said there was nothing she could do. At this point, I've accepted that I may very well spend the rest of my days alone in my car.

Rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in SE Washington state is about $1800 a month. You have to have 3× the rent in income to qualify no one I know of makes $5400 a month. That would be $33.75 an hour. There is an uneducated opinion in these comments saying it's despicable living that causes homelessness. No, it's the abject poverty happening at an alarming rate that causes homelessness. the housing "crisis" of 2008 was caused by Bill Clinton who forced banks to lend to unqualified borrowers. When they started walking out of their mortgage payments/stopped paying their debts.... voila'.....The current situation, in large part, was created by Biden and his assault on the American economy/endless spending. Poverty, including homelessness or shelter insecurity, causes mental illness. Those who haven't experienced poverty as a child have no clue how damaging it is. Children forced to grow up in an insecure environment, surrounded by insecure family members who themselves may be suffering poverty related mental illness, including substance abuse (self treating for depression) simply cannot avoid becoming psychologically damaged like the rest of their family members. Childhood poverty is like a disease. I’ve heard many people talk crap about people with less fortunate situations, as if they lack a heart, soul, compassion, and empathy. Skeptical about shoes they will never walk a mile in. If you see someone sleeping/sitting on a sidewalk why not take the time to buy them a meal. (I’m not speaking for all of the homeless, just most of them)

The real reason why there's so much homelessness- is because local housing providers responsible for dispersement of HUDD funds(section 108 choice housing vouchers) get individuals signed up for HUDD resources then they are evicting them or never even housing them in the first place.... All the while still receiving the funds from government to house the homeless. It's known as larseny.

The real reason is because there is a portion of the population that simply refuses to live honest, responsible, productive lives and instead chooses to engage in degeneracy, drugs and nihilism. Homelessness is a symptom, not a root cause. Putting these people up in public housing would not make them into good people.

You are spot on, I have seen/helped many get housing, I’d say less than 10% are still there after a year. They just don’t want to put down the bottle, pipe or needle. Thing is, if they would do it in moderation and not destroy everything, well you know. Edit: had to come back and add this. Very frustrating to always see the commentary “the Veterans “ if the vet is honorably discharged, he is on the street of his own will. Actually the VA is now even helping many that have less than honorable. The only ones that get no help are dishonorable.

@@Cmon-Man What most people either don't get or refuse to acknowledge (I'm leaning toward the latter) is that being homeless isn't because you don't have enough money or things are too expensive. It's a symptom of you having some sort of problem with drugs, a mental condition you are not taking responsibility for and/or refusing to work. You can give each of these people a mansion, and they will trash/destroy their mansion like they do the immediate environment where they live on the streets. If you were to put all the homeless in mansions, then all the mansions and subsequently the neighborhoods in no time at all would look like skid row, and we know this because that's what they do NOW. They put some homeless people in a hotel in one of these liberal cities, and they did senseless nonsense like burning the carpet. The places stank of drugs and were messy.
The stark truth is that you just can't help anyone who doesn't want to be helped, and 99% of these people do not want help, which is why they invariably stay unemployed and homeless for either a very long time or for the rest of their lives. If these people were truly good, honest people who wanted help and wanted to better themselves, then with all the free help available to them they would be of the streets in no time. Within a matter of months they would be gainfully employed and living on their own. Instead, what we find over and over again is that we give them a free place to live along with all sorts of other freebies (medical care, food, clothes, etc.) and they just destroy that place and wind up back out on the streets, like a broken record. That's because they CHOOSE to be this way. It has nothing to do with the cost of living.

To be appalled when things that suck are status quo is nothing short of irony. I've been out on the streets homeless before and there are some exceptions but probably 85 percent of people that were homeless were also drug addicts. Not all but a lot of them also had family that were willing to help them based on certain conditions, mostly in relation to there drug problems but they would rather stay homeless. Also there were always people and small church ministries that would do the best they could with the resources they had to help them. A lot of good hearted people in this country that try to help we just let media feed us all the negative though, that's not good, it will divide us and cause us to demonize eachother without ever even having a conversation. Not saying there is not bad or evil out there but there is way more good out there then people want us to believe for some reason. As for homeless problem that's not something government should just throw a bunch of money to people for, they ll just spend it on drugs and take advantage of free shelter, not all but a lot. Homelessness is more a mental or lack of education problem. It's also a lack of good parents or people being raised with no parents at all. So no self discipline. Anyways though I know some people think we just need to get all these Rich people's money thru taxes and then use that to shelter and feed them less fortunate but I've lived in the streets and experienced the culture, doing that might actually make things worse.

Many grandparents who end up raising their grandchildren and have gone back to work at minimum wage jobs and helping you at your family dollar store or gas station may be living in a tent by the river in Nashville, TN. People see someone working and assume they have a home . Car payments , clothes and children’s activities and
needs don’t leave any money left for exorbitant rent. Where I live , only 2% of housing in my county is available for rent and the prices aren’t affordable . Most of our businesses - gas stations , cafes and such are short handed or have shortened hours are or even closed because the employees live 45-1 + hours away from their low paying job. $7.25 minimum wage while 1 person needs to earn over $85k to cover living expenses . All the affordable and low rent housing has been bulldozed and gentrified in the last 5-1o years . Maddening and disgusting here in one of the epicenters of evangelicals and Christian’s : More churches per square mile than any other place on the planet and many of the people that fill 0:47 those churches take no heed of decency outside of the church walls.

A great deal of the current homelessness problem is due to corporations buying up single family houses and then reselling them at much higher prices than they bought them, or renting them at much higher rates than they would have rented at formerly. The lack of affordable housing drives more people out of housing and onto the streets. This reporter is horrible. She is a one trick pony, and her only trick seemed to be blaming migrants for the homelessness problem. Like we didn't already have the problem, too. However, Corporate Greed - something I do not think this reporter is capable of acknowledging - is to blame for a great deal of problems people are suffering economically right now. Many people that are currently homeless even have jobs, they are making money, but they can't keep up with Greed-flation. Corporate profits are off the charts right now, and they still keep raising prices and squeezing the average consumer. That's corporations, not the government, not the migrants. I was glad to see the man she interviewed was someone who believed that EVERYONE deserves shelter, which was clearly not something this reporter believes. Shameful.

To be honest as free market conservative who believes in being practical.. THAT IDEA HAS ALOT OF MERIT.. sort of a mini reset .. The Fed would pay the owner for the property and than it becomes part of a pool for eligible candidates .. which might temporarily upset some markets but if successful be a meaningful enough solution to be worth it.. and you could do it so that after 5 year's your on your own again.. no special rules no special expectations ..So the middle class might not even notice.. raise more people than sinking every one

@@cameronidk2 So, as a "free market conservative", you think the federal government paying property owners rent for homeless people to move into their vacant properties is "being practical" and "has [sic] alot of merit"??? You might as well call yourself a communist libertarian. That idea is stupid for a variety for reasons.
-We already do that, and it's called public housing. If public housing were the answer, the problem would be getting better, not worse.
-The problem with public housing is it is INHERENTLY laden with bloated costs and poor maintenance. They cost far more than similar homes in the private market, and become ghetto cesspits full of crime, gangs and drugs.
-In order for these people to move into these vacant properties, they would have to come up to code and become livable. That means even more money. Imagine the government paying for renovating all these properties. Ridiculous.
-These homeless bums would destroy all these properties, just like they destroy their current environments. Seriously, look at a homeless encampment. Does it look well maintained? They are DISGUSTING.
So, no, it's a very stupid idea that has NO merit or practicality. You are dumb for even entertaining that stupid notion. The OP is just another bleeding heart SJW who has never gotten one single person out of poverty or off the streets in his life. He is simply virtue signaling by suggesting OTHER people pay for his pipe dream.

And why should we have to spend all that money to give people who don't care to work, produce or help a place to live that they will inevitably, just as they always do, trash it? We already have public housing, and it has shown to be a terrible solution, so it would be even worse if we were to go around renovating other people's private property and let them move in and destroy those areas too. Imagine the abandoned house in your neighborhood turning into a homeless encampment. Stupid idea, man. You definitely live up to your name.

When there's no entity that will stop them, of course they will.
Allowing corporate management companies free reign, and allowing them to buy up all the properties for rentals is the biggest problem of all.
I know plenty of landlords who DON'T raise the rents to ridiculous levels. What they created is tenants who will never move out of their house, condos, etc, and that makes them very happy.
I told one that I want to be his renter, he says nobody has defaulted on their rent with him in 10 years, and until that happens he's got nothing open.
He has a home in a very desirable area, (among at least 7 others too), but this one for example: 3bd, 2ba, with gardening service, paid cable, and the tenants do not have to cover $1 of any repair like some places do, (like where I live, any repair under $100 I have to cover, even if it's nothing to do with me causing it, and he pays the HOA dues! Wanna know what he rents that house for? $1150! He's raised the rent $100 in five years!
He says it's just the right to be a good landlord. He's still making his little profit, has no money worries, and isn't interested in gouging people to add to his several million dollar portfolio.
Now there's a person to smile about. And he's only ONE of the dozens I know.
Crooked is out there, but so is good.
