2022/09: Currently part of a Humble Bundle deal along with some other older Total War titles. This remains the only game in the Total War series I've ever played.
It was totally revolutionary when it came out. I remember all the hype for it. I don't think a game like it had ever been made before and it set the standard for strategy games thereafter. The graphics are a bit dated today, but the era and theme is fascinating. If they remade it with latest tech, it would be awesome!
I want a remake! Amazing game, I want to see this on an up-to-date gamer rig. Remake it in the current "Total War" style. PLEASE! (With the videos included, I loved them!)
Shogun Total War was the very first of the Total War series by Creative Assembly- who are the same people who have gone on to make Medieval, Rome and EMpire Total War. It is set in medieval Japan during its civil war period between 1530-c.1600.
Coolest thing about this game was making that huge frontline of musketeers backed up by loads of naginata samurai when they move back. But then you see a huge number of corpses drop dead when the bullets hit them. Then rain screws you over!
Amazing game. Led me even deeper to Japanese history readings. Plus, the constant quotations from Sun Tzus Art of War. A true classic game. I WANT A REMAKE!!!!!!
Warlords Edition adds a number of things to the original Shogun: There are several new units (such as Kensai, Naginata Cavalry, and Battlefield Ninja). It also adds a couple new buildings, as well as reducing by half both the cost and build time for all structures. The biggest thing, though, is that it also adds more campaigns/scenarios. The most notable of these is the Mongol Invasion campaign, in which you can play as either the Mongols or the Hojo Shogunate (defending Japan).
Yeah. I couldn't get enough of the ones in Shogun and apparently the man who did them in Shogun has done a countless number for M2TW which will be great. Only about a month to go :p
The Total War series are actually the descendants of Broderbund's "The Ancient Art of War" and Koei's Nintendo strategy games which were released in the mid-80's. Those games featured strategy maps on which players plotted their campaigns and then zoomed into tactical battles. CA simply took ideas from those games and moved them into the 21st century. The result are some of the greatest PC strategy games of all time.
This was also my first TW game. It's one of my favorites, preceeded only by Rome and Barbarian Invasion. CA/Sega should try to remake this great series. They could expand it by throwing in China, Korea and India to the mix. Ming, Joseon, Mughal dynasties and a unified Japan vying for Asian supremacy. Asia: Total War. =)
"...they don't make them like this anymore." Even at the time, this trailer was a bit odd. When I first saw it as a kid I got it on a separate CD when I bought Ground Control I think. Trailers back then were just like they are now. Lots of short flashy clips, showing the coolest parts of the game.
Imagine what devs could do in the modern day by using graphics like these and focusing mainly on the gameplay, they could make absolutely incredible games.t The closest I've seen is Dominions 5 and the like.
My first online experience was on total wars shogun, it was brilliant made for the time with sperb atmosphere sad of the lack of developers support Hooowl to all buddies and enemies at the time Magyar Khan
Therefore wage war more on the stragic level. Even temporarily occupyinig an enemy province will destroy the most advanced improvements in barracks, stables, etc. So even if you lose the province the enemy will not be able to create those awesome units any time soon again. The worst development would be a single AI enemy swiftly defeating many opponents so you would end up having to fight all of Japan. This can be prevented by killing off enemy lords, preferrably on the battlefield so you don't have to invest time and resources into training elite assassins. If you do this consistently, you will end up facing all rebel provinces who do not cooperate but simply defend their own province.
I would say both things, troops moving on the game map in battle mode and in campaign map. You can see your armies move around. Looking your armies march in the battlefield is sweet. Makes you proud. Just like in shogun- total war. I would like to see shogun total war in a ps3 or xbox 360 as well in the pc version too.
I loved this game ever since I played it, and it has been for so many years now. Shogun Total War is a great game and I'll stand by it. The Takeda forever !!!!!
I didn't know it didn't sell well. I'm not surprised by the whole western thing. I personally found it fascinating as it was a period of history and a culture I'd barely heard of before at that age. The idea of "the way of the warrior" and the "art of war" really grabbed my imagination. It is a shame, but I think you're right, it isn't something we're likely to see again.
Its a great game - but its now 10-12 years old. Medieval came out about 7 years back, then a revamped engine for Rome which was revamped again for Medieval 2. And now we've got Empire: Total War to look forward to early next year with another new engine. Wouldn't mind seeing a mod take the M2TW engine and resetting it back to Japan - the spiritual home of the total war series :D
Because VideoGame was born from a Board Game called Shogun, amazing game like Risiko but set in Medieval Japan and with much more options (Ninja, Ronin, alliance between factions/family, ecc...)
Exactly. STW had a certain charm that has never been bested in any of the TW games to date. I long to play it again but can't because it won't run correctly on most of the latest graphics hardware.
Just as in Europe people read Latin and learnt from the Greeks and Roman scholars in the past, Japan did the samething with learning from China. Hence why people read 'The Art of War'.
The first Total War pearl. A very good game to play, a very good and well portrayed story. Brings me good memories of the Samurai and The years four seasons.
It will differ because this trailer was made from an earlier build to the one that went retail. This is ancient history as far as the TW series is concerned.
Yeah definitelly a classic.. I like Rome the most, but I agree they don 't make them like this anymore, the old ones looked so clear and transparent on the campaing maps
But it more accurately reflects the time period. Civil wars happened quite frequently in both feudal japan, and in medieval europe (but not with as great a frequency) and civil wars were something that a king definitely had to deal with. Especially when talking about religion.
i would love it if they made a second version of this game, they did it with medieval they can do it with this as well. Maybe they can expand the map as well, they have a huge theatre in empire they could do the same with this, maybe include China and Korea.
there will likely be another remake of a tw game soon as they cannot go any further in the timeline however this will be a few years because they will likely want to release an expansion for empire first
Most definately. It's about £3 (5 Euro's) but make sure you don't have an 8 series nVidia graphics card (8600/8700/8800, etc) or 9 series for that matter. It fooks up the game.
A remake of this game would be great, they should really make one but not something as overly complicated as empire my computer couldn't run it properly.
I think the following advice: "If you know when to fight, and when not to fight, you will always be victorious." is the most important and the best one. Many armies have applied their own tactical manouvres on the battlefield with great success. In real life all these, if outnumbering 2:1 divide, if outnumbering 10:1 surround, do not work, against certain type of armies (try dividing a mongol horsearcher army, or a timurid elefant army, in M2TW context :D)
if anything, they should hold off on Rome II and make Shogun II or something to do with East Asia. People don't understand the scale of battles in this continent. They could probably incorporate the Mongol conquest.
Summer of 2000. Ten years old. Seeing the grandeur of those battles for the first time is unforgettable.
2022/09: Currently part of a Humble Bundle deal along with some other older Total War titles.
This remains the only game in the Total War series I've ever played.
They don't make them like this anymore but I'm glad they make them.
Came to the comments to say the same thing.
Some severed heads casually on the dresser in the corner of the room!
I love how 90% of the dialogue in this trailer is directly quoted from Sun Tzu's "Art of War"
The greatest classical text on military strategy.
"They don't make them like this anymore." Have you played Shogun 2? That game is AWESOME!
This video is from 8 years ago and so is that description
ZKMsphere This game is made of sprites, that could be the answer
Lol thats what we say in this decade.
Shogun 2 was a great game but it can't match the original Shogun.
I'm here because of Sun.
It's worth it. Even though it was released in 2000, the game is still great and it's only worth £3.99 now.
It was totally revolutionary when it came out. I remember all the hype for it. I don't think a game like it had ever been made before and it set the standard for strategy games thereafter. The graphics are a bit dated today, but the era and theme is fascinating. If they remade it with latest tech, it would be awesome!
And now they did!
"Sir! Exellent news! You have a son!"
The speaker is reciting the Sun Tzu's: Art of War.
I want a remake!
Amazing game, I want to see this on an up-to-date gamer rig. Remake it in the current "Total War" style. PLEASE! (With the videos included, I loved them!)
10 years ago... Have you played Shogun 2? :D
the series has come so far these are some of my favorite games ever

this was the first total war game ever made?
i like the old stuff....
Yes it was the first Total War, and it was awesome at the time!
I love the assasin movies in Shogun. I wish the movies in ROME and Medival II where just as vivid.
Shogun is and will always be, the best Total War.
0:00 a legend has borne.
My God, what the hell happened to Total War! The series came from such gaming genius to corrupted, glitchy, dlc obsessing shit.
the answer is SEGA
Best Game Ever!!!!
Lost so many nights sleep playing this!!
The new versions are all about graphics, but none can beat this for gameplay
Coolest thing about this game was making that huge frontline of musketeers backed up by loads of naginata samurai when they move back. But then you see a huge number of corpses drop dead when the bullets hit them. Then rain screws you over!
Corpses dropping dead? Didn't know this was a zombie game! Lolololol. Sorry.
Mike Tyson
By an evac chopper to safety? Thank you!
Which will crash due to a somehow random zombie being aboard who also piloted it! Plot twist!
Mike Tyson Dang. Didn't see that one coming. Now that's some badass writing.
Wait until you see Donkey Kong vs King Kong!
this game came out years ago. who cares if the graphics aren't as good as the games today, it is still a lot of fun to play!
the game that started one of the best Strategy game series of all time. The total war series are unique in there way of bring grand battles to life.
Know your enemy, know yourself ... And your victory is never in danger.
Amazing game. Led me even deeper to Japanese history readings. Plus, the constant quotations from Sun Tzus Art of War. A true classic game. I WANT A REMAKE!!!!!!
Shogun 2 in 2011

This game was awesome.
Man, that brings back memories. What a great game. Thanks for uploading. Much respect!
Imagine what devs could do in the modern day by using graphics like these and focusing mainly on the gameplay, they could make absolutely incredible games.t
The closest I've seen is Dominions 5 and the like.
creative assembly is one of the few companies out there that has improved her games over its early games and make them better.
@John SyzlackI guess you either die a legendary studio, or live long enough to see yourself become the company that releases broken games.
My first online experience was on total wars shogun, it was brilliant made for the time with sperb atmosphere sad of the lack of developers support
Hooowl to all buddies and enemies at the time
Magyar Khan
DUH? I haven't heard that since I was in a US school back in the early 90's.
Year 2000 Rocked my World, Better than that broken prototype BRAVEHEART!
Ah, good old STW! I still play it, believe it or not. When it comes atmosphere and immersion, I've never played a better game.
shogun total war was the 1st strategy game i ever played and i can say it is just as good as rome hopeing for shogun total war 2
I just picked this game up for only 5.00 and enjoy it so far. I remember the board game as a kid.
omg this was so awesome!
damn I grew up with Total war (:
The quotes are based on Musashi's "The Book of the Five Rings" - you can find it at most bookstores.
VH/VH on Empire gives the AI BIG bonuses, its actually damn difficult to beat on the battle map.
Therefore wage war more on the stragic level.
Even temporarily occupyinig an enemy province will destroy the most advanced improvements in barracks, stables, etc.
So even if you lose the province the enemy will not be able to create those awesome units any time soon again.

While all amazing, no Total War game following Shogun, quite captured the essence of it's subject matter quite like Shogun.
My neighbours are my enemies, and "my homies now my fortress" did anyone else got it that way? 0:39
Hey time traveler, how come you came here? I wonder where is Talbot now...
Loved Shgoun, this brings me memories, played it with my older brother.
Yeah, I have the same problem and I love the Shogun series the most. Would love to see it return in a more inventive, graphical and performing title.
one of my all time favorite games, can't wait for Shogun 2
An ancient masterpiece.
Hope they make Shogun Total War 2 it would be totally awesome
damn comparing the sprites to shogun 2's high poly models, we have come a long way
I would say both things, troops moving on the game map in battle mode and in campaign map. You can see your armies move around. Looking your armies march in the battlefield is sweet. Makes you proud. One of best games of Total War series a time when CA didnt look at the money but at the game
Doesn't change the fact that it is the best Total War IMO
This is better then Empire which came out 2009 and Rome II 2013
No, Empire wasn't bad, but ROME II was BS
Michał Hunicz Rome II's launch sucked, but the game is actually pretty good.
No way
Shogun 2 Yahoo!!! Finaly my Viking spirit celebrate after morning in Empire=P
Vikings, Samurai, Mongols and Spartans are my favorites in History.
Let's hope they will return and make Shogun 2
Medieval Japan is a very nice location for this type of game to take place.
PLEASE MAKE SHOGUN II
A remake of this game could be one of the best selling games ever.
Because VideoGame was born from a Board Game called Shogun, amazing game like Risiko but set in Medieval Japan and with much more options (Ninja, Ronin, alliance between factions/family, ecc...)
It is easy to tell those people who were too young to appreciate this game when it came out and now wonder why the graphics are dated.
Shogun was the most realistic one. They don't make them like this anymore, but I like Rome's management and map more.
Love the footage from Ran.
So many quotations from Sun Tzu's "Art of War", I can't stand it ^_^
Exactly. STW had a certain charm that has never been bested in any of the TW games to date. I long to play it again but can't because it won't run correctly on most of the latest graphics hardware.
MagyarKhan was great at the game dominating with his cavalry army
we've come a long way babie!
Yes i know and that part really worked well in shogun.
They should make a 2nd version to take advantage of the latest technology. I've never been a gamer, but I like this game a lot.
@Adventchild8 Shogun 2: Total War will be the next Total War. They show it on the E3 soon.
It will differ because this trailer was made from an earlier build to the one that went retail. This is ancient history as far as the TW series is concerned.
this was my favorite game of all time as a kid. Thanks for posting. I was always the purple armies:)
thanks for the upload! Wasnt sure if this was the game i could remember
Great narrator. I think he is the same in Shogun II as well. :)
I liked this game! It's too bad some folks were too ignorant to give samurai warfare a chance.
this game deserves a remake. I would love to lead a few thousand Samurai into battle, but some new graphics would be nice.
Yeah definitelly a classic.. I like Rome the most, but I agree they don 't make them like this anymore, the old ones looked so clear and transparent on the campaing maps
Agree 100%!! This game gets you so involved as you said in the atmosphere so much better than all the next total wars.
@TeshnosFire; yeah I know! Can't wait to see it! Will be like going back in time in some ways...
Much of it is the same as the build that went retail. The differences you can see are the unit cards and perhaps some of the video graphics.
i have completed it with all clans and the most satisfaction is when an assasination is pulled off
all depends on how strong and experienced every warrior of an army is and how tactical their warlord is.
there will likely be another remake of a tw game soon as they cannot go any further in the timeline however this will be a few years because they will likely want to release an expansion for empire first
it is announced recently : they will !
They put alot of effort into the 1st total war. They included assasination videos and acutal real life videos which non of the others have done.
i played this game TOO much, can't wait for the new Shogun now
we need a shogun 2!! great game + great grafics = super great game!!
WOW, we've come a long way from here
i can't wait for shogun 2 total war to be released
Most definately. It's about £3 (5 Euro's) but make sure you don't have an 8 series nVidia graphics card (8600/8700/8800, etc) or 9 series for that matter. It fooks up the game.

That was funny as hell when that maiden killed that guy with her hair pin!
I watched this video the very same day that i began reading "Sun Tzu's Art (law) of war" :D
I think the following advice: "If you know when to fight, and when not to fight, you will always be victorious." is the most important and the best one.

This whole trailer he basically quote The Art of War.
this takes me back
To when total war was good
15theoren yep Rome 2 even after updates and patch after patch just does not feel like a good total war game.
if anything, they should hold off on Rome II and make Shogun II or something to do with East Asia. People don't understand the scale of battles in this continent. They could probably incorporate the Mongol conquest.
there making shogun 2 total war now! release date: 2011
