    Hello, this comment is unrelated to the video topic however I wanted to note it down. While I’m sure you have loads of formulas you would like to get around to trying out, I had two product types that would be fun to see you play around with. They are (1) encapsulates within a gel-type base product and (2) using pH reactive colorant in a product (the type that reacts by turning bright pink when exposed to a particular pH range, within which skin pH typically falls). It’s usually added to lip products to make “mood lipstick” that seems to magically turn from a colorless balm (or a gently green tinted balm) into a pink tint, when applied to the lips. Now a few balm type blushes have come out using this colorant as well.
    Perhaps these ideas utilize ingredients or processes which are too complex or prohibitive to be tested out - which, if so, I’m clearly not educated about - but just wanted to drop a message here! Thanks!

    Hi Marie, after watching a previous video of yours, you advised as a beginner formulator, the safest bet was to get cetearyl alcohol as it could be used for formulas that call for stearic alcohol and cetyl alcohol, so I did. However, I noticed you used cetearyl alcohol AND other emulsifiers. So my question is, in those formulas, could I just add the total of the different emulsifiers you use and just use that total cetearyl alcohol in my recipes?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Год назад +1

      Hi Mimi! It sounds like you're working with a core misconception that is causing your confusion. Cetearyl alcohol is not an emulsifier and will not emulsify, so you can never use it instead of an emulsifier.
      Cetearyl alcohol, stearic acid, and cetyl alcohol are all thickeners/hardeners: none of them will emulsify a formulation. Out of the three, cetearyl alcohol is the most versatile, so I often recommend it as the first fatty thickener for new formulators.
      I've done deep dives on all three of these hardening ingredients + many complete emulsifying waxes-I highly recommend checking them out to learn more: ruclips.net/p/PL4cZgaY9j7fMGUXks0RajQ-LGoHn4jXnD. Or, if you want a quicker resource, you can look them all up in the free Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) :)

      Aww, thank you for the quick response. So, this is what I got from my local supplier when I typed in cetearyl alcohol: "Emulsifying Wax or Polawax is a non-ionic, self-emulsifying wax used in the production of oil-in-water type creams and lotions.
      INCI: Cetearyl Alcohol ; PEG-20 Stearate"
      And I've been using it as the total amount of formulas that called for emulsifying wax AND cetearyl alcohol. Think maybe the description of the product confused me. From the description, is the way I'm using this product correct? Or can you recommend a percentage for using it as both an emulsifier and thickener?

      Hi Susan! These ingredients are very simple as far as lotion formulations go; we really can't reduce much from here. If this was a sandwich recipe, it's "bread + single filling". Remove either ingredient and you simply don't have the makings of a sandwich anymore.
      I've shared three other simple natural lotion formulations (all linked in the free partner blog post) and you'll see they all have a very similar collection/number of ingredients.
      For an absolute newbie, I'd recommend starting with anhydrous formulations-I'd say lotions are a sort of "step 2" after anhydrous formulations like balms and butters. www.humblebeeandme.com/super-simple-whipped-shea-butter/
      Happy making!
