I feel like people who keep complaining about the lack of sex scenes just don't understand the story and the characters. Like you said S1 had a lot of sex scenes because it was DAPHNE'S story, it was her sexual awakening whereas in S2 which is ANTHONY'S story, he does not have a problem with physical intimacy, what he has a problem with is his emotional intimacy and that is what this season is about, its about his emotional growth.
I think people need to start to understand that each season of Bridgerton is going to be different because each season is going to have different leads and those leads will have different journeys to go on.

Agree. Actually in an interview with Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley he said it in a great way, they were emotionally naked with each other before they were physically naked with each other, and that is so true. The emotional connection was what had to be built up and it was.

The issue with the lack of sex scenes was so annoying to me because like you said Anthony’s problem wasn’t that he didn’t have it or know what it was, it was that all he had was MEANINGLESS sex especially in the aftermath of the Sienna situation. I think him and Kate finally engaging in sexual activity in episode 7 was even more worth the wait because there was meaningful thoughts and feelings behind his actions.

When sex scenes are the only substance you have in a season, that’s a problem. And that’s the problem I had with season 1 and it cheapened me believing in Simon and Daphne’s “romance.”
Whereas here Anthony and Kate finally having sex feels very beautiful because it feels earned. It feels like they’ve finally let their guard down and allowed themselves to finally do something for themselves. And before all Anthony had was meaningless sex with a woman he was never going to be serious about and it made him feel hollow. Whereas when it happens with Kate, this same thing doesn’t exist and it’s probably the first time he’s made love with purpose and intention.
And it’s way more beautiful than anything between Simon and Daphne because it feels like two people actually being in love as opposed to lust.

You are so right, I want to see show Benedict romance, not book benedict. They need to change the mistress angle for him. Make it that he wants to marry Sophie but she won't let him because to marry a servant his family would have to shun him. Make them fall in love but cause she didn't have a family, she can't let benedict turn his back on his his family for her. That would be a beautiful story, plus Luke Thompson playing benedict all flirty and googoo eyes over sophie will be amazing!

I cannot imagine show Benedict being cold enough to do the stuff that book Benedict does. Show Benedict is a hopeless romantic and you just know he will be the one falling head over heels. I can picture show Sophie being a ruthless pragmatist, determined to forge her own independent life and never be reduced to a mistress rather than the classic cinderella plot. I would love this contrast between goofball romantic show Benedict and sensible and composed Sophie, who isn't a noblewoman but is determined to sure as hell act like one.

The writers really have to be working their ass off to pull off Polin. It's getting tiring seeing Penelope pine for this man. And as individual characters, Penelope has a lot of nuance to cover and redeem and Colin's character needs a lot work to be fully fleshed out. The relationship is also hard to nail when Penelope was still grovelling as low as a doormat for Colin and Colin still not moving on from Marina, immature and became somewhat more pretentious (Colin really became that rich kid who spent a gap year abroad to discover themselves and it became their whole personality 😭)

Ok about the wedding…In Indian serials, there is a troupe called the “deconstructed wedding.” So if you pay attention you saw Kate in her wedding dress, you saw her walk down the aisle, you saw them kiss at the alter. So you pretty much got their wedding but in a deconstructed way. That was a huge nod to Indian culture and why you didn’t see Kate and Anthony’s actual wedding.

I read the books several times and yes Penelope in the books loses some weight but it is mainly because she was 17 in the first book and it is described as she lost her "baby fat" and she becomes more mature but she is still on the bigger size, now Colin doesn't even notice her until she is 28 literally 10 years after she lost the weight, so that is not an influence, Colin in the book pretty much becomes depressed in the first half because he doesn't think his life has any real meaning and when Pen encourages him to pursue his passions it's when he starts thinking about her in a romantic way (as somebody else pointed out when he was looking into her eyes). But given the show's history of changing pretty much everything I doubt that they will make Nicola lose weight for the new season. I just hope they can give Penelope better wigs as she will be the main girl now!!

I frankly prefer the characterisation of both Kate and Anthony in the show as opposed to the book. Book Anthony (as you stated) is aggressive, unapologetically misogynistic (as opposed to show Anthony) and lacks decency towards Kate on many occasions: I.e. kissing Kate without her consent and then being pissed when she broke the kiss, followed by her asking for the key to leave the room they’re locked in and him throwing it demeaningly on the floor (granted he’s repentant in his head, but fails to apologise) and his general aggression towards her (the I’m going to kill you and lunging for her throat after Newton dunks him in the serpentine, kicking her in the stomach and not caring that he hurt her). Not to mention the super icky wedding night that basically just involves him somewhat- correction… FULLY coercing and guilting her into consummating their marriage after she asked for a week to prepare mentally. Book Benedict is worse and a true menace to society and woman kind so I’m so glad that they changed both of the brothers in the show.
The differences they made to Kate in the show are truly a thing of beauty. Book Kate, though described as prickly and headstrong etc is much weaker in my opinion. Granted she isn’t shy, but she’s painted as an insecure spinster who is always comparing her beauty or lack thereof to her sisters or any other woman of the ton, who’s much more submissive in comparison - she fits the typical Taming of the Shrew archetype etc. Whereas show Kate is a shotgun wielding, horse riding virago that doesn’t give a single fig for peoples backward ideas or opinions, baring those of her loved ones. She follows the strictures of society for the sake of being polite but you truly get the sense that though she follows some of the rules, she will never permit herself to be chained down by them (e.g. refusing Anthony’s first proposal because she deserved more than what seemed to be a half hearted attempt to save face on his part or fulfil a duty, even after being intimate, or stating that she’d never listen to him - despite his rank or position if she fundamentally disagreed). And as Simone said, she’s a flawed character with the purest heart, and you can see all those aspects of her simultaneously through Simone’s portrayal. But the best part for me is that rather than centring her trauma around storms and what they represent, you see that much of her behaviours and characterisations are caused by trauma. From eldest child parentification, to the grief of loosing both her parents, and the feelings of unworthiness that she constantly feels she must overcome by earning peoples love - which for so many eldest daughters (particularly from immigrant backgrounds) is the story of our lives. Show Kate (baring Anthony, Pen and maybe Violet) in my opinion, is one of the most fascinating, fully formed, complex, richly written characters in the entire show. She’s extremely vulnerable yet unwaveringly brave and strong, she’s kind but cares naught for being “agreeable” or even likeable sometimes. Quite frankly, she’s my personal favourite.

I think what Edwina meant when she told Kate that she lost her power was that she would no longer be taking her cues from Kate anymore. Because in the beginning, Edwina would look to Kate before she made any kind of moves when it came to meeting men. Which is puzzling because Edwina was pretty stubborn when it came to Anthony even after she was told by Kate (many times) and Anthony himself that he wouldn't love her. The half-sister line was hurtful and unnecessary.

As someone who has read the book. I have to agree that the TV version improved on a lot of the things I felt were lacking in the book. In the book, Anthony was an emotionally damaged bad boy that did not really improve as a human being and Kate is a much younger innocent, insecure and demure girl who hates that he is a rake. Simone's Kate is headstrong and her hatred for Anthony is because he is arrogant and misogynistic. She is herself flawed and they both improve each other as human beings. By improvement I mean more than just learning to love another person but themselves. As an older child myself, I 100% relate to Kanthony having to put family above themselves, leading to situations that are awkward and self-inflicted.
My problem with the Series is that there was not enough Kanthony! My godddd the Featherington storylines could have been cut down a lottt. Kanthony was rushed and pushed to the end of the season. We never really got to savor them. Jonathan Bailey and Simon Ashely ATE the few scenes they were given and that is truly the best part of the drama.

On what you were saying about Edwina not knowing exactly what she wants, to me it felt like the reason she had convinced herself that she loved anthony was in a way a response to Kate being so insistent on a "love match." she respects and loves Kate so much and she's also really young and doesn't have any real example of what a true love match is except for her parents (who she only really has this mythologized idea passed on from Mary and Kate because her father died when she was so young) so in her mind she equates the excitement she feels about "becoming the vicountess" and joining the Bridgerton family as what love is. It feels like her telling Kate she loves Antony came from a subconscious desire to please Kate which makes the irony of the situation that much more heartbreaking.

I felt like Edwina had convinced herself that what she was feeling was love because she’s young and naive - she thought her excitement about the idea of a future with him and the respect that she felt for him meant that she loved him. Similarly, I think she was in the process of convincing herself that Anthony had deeper feelings for her - he was intent on pursuing her from the start, showering her with gifts and trying to spend time with her, then he proposes to her, defends their family against the Sheffields, and moves up the wedding in spite of the inheritance scheme. From her perspective, I can understand why she thought it might be love.

  • @keneilwemoloi9993
    @keneilwemoloi9993 2 года назад +77

Actually I completely understand what Edwina meant when she told Kate " You have lost your power over me" Lets dissect.... Kate is like a mother figure to Edwina. And like a lot of mothers, they want the best for their children. But they think that what is best for their children is what they decide. Like those moms who project their desires onto there daughters. She couldn't be a ballerina now she forces her daughter to do it because since it made her happy, she presumes that her daughter will feel the same way. Edwina told Kate in the very same episode, why couldn't it be her who married the viscount? And at that point you realize that Edwina is right, had Kate made her intentions towards Anthony clear to Edwina, she would have stepped back. A good mother daughter relationship occurs when there is a point where the mother allows her child to make her own decisions and go after what she wants like what Mary has done. Edwina blindly follows Kate because in her eyes Kate can do no wrong, like an idol. Then she finds out Kate has been keeping the secret about the Sheffield's, then the thing with Anthony. Then she starts to realize that Kate isn't always right. Kate makes mistakes, and though she loves me she doesn't always know what's best for me because the only one who can truly know that is me. That is why what she has said was so pivotal. She lost the power to decide for Edwina what is right and what is wrong. And that is how their relationship became stronger and sisterly instead of mother/daughter. Now they both go after what they want individually but together.
Another thing, Edwina is like ''why would you let me put it together on my own....." I think its because Edwina thought there were no secrets between them. She tells Kate everything. She thought they were sisters, like us against the world type of vibes. Only to find out that its one- sided. Kate doesn't tell Edwina everything. And because of this Edwina never knew what Kate truly wanted. I think the writing room was pretty spot on with this conflict. Edwina was not mad at Kate because of she loved Anthony, she was mad at Kate because she though they were close, kinda like El and Pen, only to find out that she doesn't even truly know her. Her role model and idol had disappointed her. Which needed to happen for Edwina to aspire to be her own woman, not to be Kate.

Nailed it on the love triangle. That's what made Kate so appealing. She is innately admirable and not just beautiful(Those eyes, my God!). She even told Lady Danbury that if she could have married to secure the family's future she would have done so without hesitation. Dutifully.
Duty is heavier than a mountain, as the Japanese say. But even harder than duty is Giri--Obligation. "The burden hardest to bear." That was Kate's big obstacle. Feeling obligated by Mary's acceptance. Being a stepdaughter, but loving Mary and Edwina so much, saddled her at 18 with two of Life's toughest challenges. And, note: she never wavered or asked to be relieved. Only after Edwina's complete rejection of Anthony AND the rescue of both families by the ever rascally Queen did she give in to her feelings.
One thing about Edwina was the age difference. Anthony was 29 years old and she was 17-18. And thanks in part to Kate, she was in love with being in Love. Especially growing up without a father, she would have been all the more susceptible to the glamor of an older, Titled and very handsome man who was deliberately charming her. Once the spell was broken, I can see her totally supporting her beloved sister.

The truth is that we DID see Kate and Anthony's wedding. I know it is symbolic but people should listen closely the the Lady Whistledown voice overs during these episodes. LOL. In the wedding episode, before they cut back to Kate and Anthony at the altar, they discuss whether weddings are actually necessary. And LW basically states that it amounts to a human ritual. But in nature, no one is marrying the rooster and the hen. And its sort of ridiculous that humans think they can ordain something that nature has already decided and it cuts to Anthony and Kate. Essentially, it suggests that Kate and Anthony are already bonded by nature. Already married. And then they end the episode with them kissing on the altar. So the symbolism is there.

And now I understood why they choose not to show Kate and Anthony's wedding this season especially given its context. And I also think this is also connected to how Anthony not using the ring in his 2nd proposal to Kate. Marriage/wedding and the ring were symbols of duty this season. Not showing the wedding, and not using the ring meant that Kate and Anthony's love transcended whatever ceremony or object we humans use to represent a union. I agree with all the issues you had with Edwinia's character. She just wasn't consistent and her reconciliation with Kate was lacking because there was no apology/acknowledgement of her faults or even recognition for all Kate has done for her. Like you said, they should have made Edwinia really want the title and realize she wants more because it didn't make sense for love to be her desire, but she continued to pursue Anthony who said he couldn't love her. And if what they wanted the reason behind it to be her naivety that maybe love will grow they didn't play it well because it felt like it came out of nowhere when bought up in episode 6 and none of Edwinia's actions for episodes 1-5 showed that she was seeking love. Now when it comes to Kate - I could accept Edwinia's angry half-sister comment and Kate losing her power speech - even though it didn't make any sense whatsoever - if she had apologized and recognized her faults in the situation and particularly how she's been as a sister. Because Edwinia was content with Kate sacrificing everything for her and being prioritized at Kate's expense until she couldn't get what she wanted which was Anthony's love despite being told that from the beginning. She had a right to be angry that she was lied to by omission, but her reaction just never made sense in the context of the story they are trying to tell. Like let her be angry at Kate for lying and maybe bitter that Anthony couldn't love her instead of that you can't give me what I deserve speech to Anthony which was told to her by both him and Kate, and you lost your power speech to Kate because what power you haven't listened to her all season when it came to pursuing Anthony if she had they would have never made it this far.

I agree with everything you've said about Edwina's character ...she seemed to keep contradicting herself. Even Charithra who played the character said how a couple of episodes before the wedding itself Edwina started orchestrating her match with Anthony, encouraging him to propose and that her behaviour did not necessarily come from a place of selflessness. She kept pushing for a proposal (taking Kate's help) long after she noticed that his feelings were 'not there for her'. For some reason the writers wanted to give more power to her character and ended up bringing up a half-baked confused and entitled individual, who really needs more time to grow. Also having her constantly harp about Kate having been 'unkind' or having 'lied' to her was uncalled for, with Kate having to grovel. There were mistakes made on both sides. In one conversation with Edwina, the Queen said "one should make one's own choice about what to do in the face of true love". When Edwina saw that what Kate and Anthony had was true love, she should've graciously pulled out - rather than wait for Kate's near death experience for a change of heart. And yes, we're all here for Kanthony. (Sigh)

YESS!!!!! You hit everything I had an issues with and you are so right about the love triangle. I would add that there be more of the Sharma back story and give Lady Mary a character arc. As for Edwina, because we don't get the back story like we should have we don't see that Kate spent years training her to be the wife of the member of the Ton AND mixing in stories about true love. Edwina came to believe that this was her future, a nobleman who had lots of money, lived in a big house, and who would love her devotedly. She had the Queen and Lady Danbury both identifying Anthony as "the best" and her mother was echoing their statements. Anthony was doing things that suggested that he really wanted her. It was very easy to build a romantic fantasy based on what she was told she was going to get.
When she saw that Kate (the person who had unwittingly helped create this fantasy) had feelings for him and he for her she felt like everything she had ever believed had come crashing down around her. It was easy for Edwina to make assumptions that Kate had filled her head with things that she really wanted for herself based on her interest in Anthony. Edwina felt like she needed distance from Kate to make her own decisions, and that's why she said the half sister comment. That's why she talked about Kate losing her power because she felt as though Kate had manipulated her into something she didn't know she really wanted. As the actress who played Edwina said she was so much madder at Kate because she loved Kate so much more.
You were absolutely right that those reconciliations needed more time. I also think that there needed to be one between Mary and Edwina as well as the one between Mary and Kate. I think the one between Mary and Kate needed to include a better apology for how she abdicated her responsibilities to her.
As for Colin you weren't supposed to be happy with the things that he did. You were supposed to find him lost and confused. Oh and According to Nicola you will be seeing Penelope grow up.
And to conclude everyone forgets was that Edwina, Penelope, and Eloise are all kids.

ITA with your assessment. And you are spot on with Edwina. She is inconsistently written from claiming to want to marry for love. To ignoring that Anthony directly told her he wants the exact opposite in ep 2 at the poetry reading. The whole "Does that make him a bad man or an honest one?" And she literally and figuratively walked away from Kate and accepted Anthony's suit. And he becomes her primary suitor despite Kate's many fierce and vocal objections. She repeatedly tells Kate "I want the Viscount" and that she "won't give up" yet we're supposed to believe that Kate is somehow oppressing this young lady, who clearly can make her opinion known when she chooses to do so. Sorry, it's like they were trying so hard to give Edwina the high ground - and yes, she's entitled to her anger and her hurt from the humiliation and disrespect, etc. I do not dispute that but Kate is not entirely to blame and Edwina is not completely blameless, and neither is Lady Mary nor Lady Danbury. But rounding on Anthony about giving her the love that she deserves? Well damn, Edwina betrayed herself first by accepting Anthony's courtship when he made his intentions very clear. If she wanted to marry for love then choosing to accept the suit of someone who was determined to marry for duty and had expressed his opposition to a love match was foolhardy at best. Hello? This is where Lady Mary and Lady Danbury failed Edwina and Kate imo (or one of the areas). Edwina is young and inexperienced with the marriage mart. Kate is too tbh. Both Mary and Danbury knew that Edwina and Anthony wanted different things, love vs. duty. Danbury even tells this to Violet at the horse race. Mary is there when Kate informs them of Anthony's position on the matter. Yet neither of these matrons speak with Edwina, advising that she and the Viscount need to have an understanding and be on the same page if/when they get engaged? I mean really, did they all just forget that Edwina was looking for love yet Anthony was fulfilling duty? That's such a gaping hole it's hard to ignore.
And then Edwina rounding on Kate? Kate has lost her power? Honey, you haven't been under Kate's power since Anthony set his sights on you. If Kate was really running this show Edwina would have been married to Lord Lumley from the jump.
Anyway, her girl-boss wannabe speech just rang hollow to me. ITA, her growth would have been more believable if she decided she wanted more than to marry for duty/title and was choosing love instead. But that's not the arc they portrayed. And the thing is, Shondaland will sacrifice character and plot for drama so how much of this is deliberate and how much is just poor writing, is anyone's guess.
It's all just so inconsistent. Like they didn't take the time to review the earlier eps/scripts or they made changes but the changes were not consistent from beginning to end and they gave themselves far too little time in the end to fully address everything. The Edwina/Kate reconciliation was rushed and superficial. Not to mention the lack of Kathony.
I mean, damnit. This is the primary couple and their immediate relationships. You need to get this right. No disrespect to the subplots and other actors (I actually am not as bothered by the other storylines as such) but the primary storyline must take precedence and should never be compromised to accommodate these other subplots. The primary storyline should be fully fleshed out. And it bothers me that they're so busy seeding other storylines for future seasons at the expense of the current primary romance. I mean, if they need 10 eps then Netflix please find the budget for that but really, that's not a request for more subplots. It's a hope that they focus and streamline the subplots and give the primary romance time and space to breathe and develop as needed.

Also, I think with her being unapologetic, it goes with the being young and never thinking you were in the wrong or that you made a mistake.
I really enjoyed this season, and I feel like a lot of the negative reviews are people who refuse to divorce the book from the show. "It will not be his appearance and title that will woo you; it will be his mind and spirit that will court yours." Kate actually didn't know Edwina as well as she thought she did because Ed absolutely fell for the looks and title. There wasn't a moment where I genuinely believed that she was in love with Anthony because Anthony never showed her who he really was and she seemed content with the image he presented. And I don't fault her for that because from the second she was named the Diamond, moved from "going to London to find a good match" to fairy tale. And the fairy tales says that as the Diamond she's supposed to have the most eligible bachelor of the season and live happily ever after. Ironically enough, she probably would have made a love match with someone if she hadn't been the Diamond.
As for Polin...I haven't read any of the books and don't plan to, but Colin lost me for good and all when he decided to have a laugh with the lads at the expense of his friend. Kate's idea of a man is the one she would want for herself, and she forgets to ask Edwina what she really wants.
Edwina wanted a handsome man with a title. Let's see her reaction when in front of Queen, Anthony proposes a family marriage ceremony in the country. Edwina is startled and then relieved by the queen's pompous wedding plans and keeps telling Kate that the archbishop will marry them.
Edwina wanted security more than love. In that Anthony was more right than Kate.

My own understanding of Edwina, she wants love but she is too immature to understand what love is, so she thinks that all the other markers are “love” (mostly because she has not felt it yet, mostly just has a crush).
Yes, I wish they had given them more time to explain why things happened and to apologize.
I loved the season anyway, even when I have to fill in some of these things.

That was mine as well. Edwina was a cultured adult woman (by the standards of her society) and was taught all these things about becoming the perfect nobleman's wife. But deep down she is also a deeply sheltered teenager who on some deep level equates duty with love. It's also clear that Kate has been partially reinforcing her fantasies about love because she desperately wants Edwina to be happy, even if that happiness is unrealistic. Edwina's arc in this season is her essentially having her fantasies torn away from her and having to actually begin making active decisions about what she wants for the first time now that she is no longer in Kate and her family's protective bubble.

I skipped all of the secondary plot lines this season after my initial watch but next season I’ll just be on the look out for all the happily married Kanthony bliss. I just hope the writing for season 3 is stronger than what they did for poor Edwina. Benedict’s book was also my least favorite so I’m wondering if they will use him to completely change the story line of the book to the show and give us something 180°. The whole point of making Penelope fall in love first was so that she can get heartbroken and become numb toward Colin, he will most likely be the one wanting her in season three more than she will want him. We get to see him say "I will never think of courting Penelope Fetherington" and they set it up so that we can see him want her even more in S3. Also, I'm sure that season 3 will be more interesting than season 2 because we are going to see the Bridgertons get set up for their future seasons since they've recast Francesca.

Totally agree with what you say about period romance novels. In fact, in one of the best adaptations of Joe Wright's 2005 Pride and Prejudice (not to mention the BBC's with Colin Firth) there wasn't even a kiss. Only in the 2005 film version, there is a scene added but outside of the movie. And now that I remember in the 2007 version of Persuasion, there are 2 kiss scenes. Only at the end. And super "modest". And in the latest version of Emma I think there's a kiss at the end. So it was a real pleasant surprise to find this "adaptation" or "reversion" of Julia Quinn's novels to the screen with this more of a simmering romance approach with such a fiery conclusion. It was the perfect balance between romance and sensuality. Unlike the first season, which focused on Daphne's sexual awakening. Everything was more physical and apologies, but it seemed to me in many moments, very offensive to tell the truth. There was an unequal power relationship between her and Simon. And then Daphne's way of "solving" Simon's lie, was very ugly. In fact, abusive and made me very uncomfortable. Instead in season 2, one of the things that I liked the most had to do with Anthony actually looking for an equal. A life partner. This is how he expresses it first when he says that the "debutantes were just that" debutantes and very young for him "And then in the final statement, when he tells Kate that he loves her and that he "wants a life that suits both of them" I found that super moving. Apologies because I'm using the translator, since English is not my language.

Let's see....hoping for the best and BTW I too love Penelope 😍

  • @thornyrose1235
    @thornyrose1235 2 года назад +8

Great video! I'd be lying if I said I'll be watching S3 for Polin instead of dissecting every Kanthony scene and watching it at 0.25 speed 😂
I also really struggled with Edwina's outburst after the wedding. I have no problem with her being angry with Kate and I also wasn't too upset about the half-sister comment (it was harsh in the moment but I just assumed it would get cleared up later) until I realized that Edwina was never accountable for anything she said/did the entire season, which makes their resolution feel hollow. It also bothered me that she never lashed out at Mary for letting this happen. Like, Mary was her actual mother. Why wasn't Edwina mad at Mary for turning a blind eye all these years? I also agree that it comes down to bad writing. We barely got to see the Sharma family dynamic. We're told that the sisters are close but we barely got to see it.
So regarding Penelope, I agree that if we look at the two situations separately, the Marina one was worse but the problem for me is that she did the exact same thing one year later to Eloise. That makes it look like she's not just a teenager making mistakes but that she is actively making these decisions. There was no remorse in Season 2 towards Marina or self-reflection about what she did, which makes it look like she felt justified because she somehow 'saved' Colin (without his knowledge or consent). Then she does it again with Eloise.
In the situation with Eloise, she was upset at hurting her friend but she didn't seem upset at actually doing what she did because she ends up picking up her quill with a smirk on her face at the very end of S2. I also don't agree that there were no other solutions. She should have confessed to Eloise once she saw that sh*t got real with the Queen. She spent the entire season antagonizing the Queen and so she owed it to Eloise to at least tell her that she's LW and get her input about what they should do. Again, she acted to 'save' Eloise, without her knowledge or consent...and she also made the decision right after Eloise told her that she'll let the Queen think it's her until Eloise uncovers LW herself. That makes her actions look very much self-interested, much in the same way as with the Marina situation. That's why for me, I look at both situations together because it seems to be a pattern with Penelope and that speaks to her as a character. That said, I'm also still hopeful that she'll get a redemption arc where she actually feels the gravity of what she has done.
Agreed that Colin was bland this season. I'm hoping that the chemistry will spark in S3 but I'm slightly worried. Nic and Luke N seem like they're really into their characters so it gives me hope but I'm not going to lie and say I'm not worried. I'm worried about the hole they dug Penelope in as LW and that they put Colin firmly into the blandzone.
I didn't like Eloise/Theo because I thought he was a complete jerk when she backed away from kissing her. He knows she's inexperienced and she's currently in turmoil so maybe now isn't the time to try to make out and when he does and she moves back? He acts like a complete d!ck. His behaviour grossed me out.

I’m happy she seems to have grown up a bit more and if she comes back for more seasons I hope to see her be more with it.
I think that a lot of peoples takes on Edwina also are true whether their negative or positive. This is because the script took her in so many different directions that it’s kind of like choose your own adventure. She’s kind of vague so when people say things I’m always like I can see that. 1000000% agree with you and I am really sad that you are not my friend in "real" life because I need somebody to gush about Kathony and in general talk about this Season. Anyway, my takes:
Season 2 is so superior to Season 1 that they are not even on the same chart. I went from a hater to a stan.
Kathony is the couple with best on-screen chemistry EVER - I don't know how they did it but they did it. Plus writers understood the assignment of how to do period drama. I was super pissed when S1 was being compared to Jane Austen because just NOPE. But S2 - definitely bears very strong resemblance to the "tone" of Jane Austen.
It's been like 6 weeks since I have finished the show and there was not a day when I haven't rewatched some of their scenes. Kanthony needs to have at least like 25% of screen time in S3 - no angst and drama, just marital bliss.
Edwina was a HUGE problem - not because of triangle/drama but because of how logically inconsistent she was written - writers really did screw when writing her.
S2 is WAYYYYYY better then book - book Anthony is a violent asshole who takes advantage of INSECURE young girl. And I hate dying young and being afraid of the storms conflict. WTF?!?!?
Ok to wrap it up . Colin is boring.
And once you find out about the character assassination' of Eloise in her book, you would pray for Theo to come back.
I also discovered Bridgerton through the show so I don't hold any allegiance to the books but from what I hear (I have read only Anthony one), - and this is a very controversial opinion - I think they are stupid and problematic and I hope that the future seasons will do as good of job of adapting them as S2 did.
Sorry for rambling... and thank you for a great video.

Pen wasn’t vindictive at all, if she was would have outed her earlier, Marina could have married any of the eligible bachelors that visited her but chose Colin. Pen tried to say not her friend, but then Marina was damn right mean to pen. Also she did agonise over writing about Marina and called her families reputation into chaos. YAAAASSSS!!!! 💯 agree with everything you said! Particularly the way the writers tackled the Sharma women dynamic. I too was left with the impression that I had to think/feel that Kate was almost “the manipulative villain” here… when I read her intentions completely differently throughout the season. To me, it was clear that she was selfless throughout. And having Edwina lecture her and even Mary telling her that they had forgiven her… like, wtf?!
I have to agree with many others’ opinions that the writers made Edwina “mature/grow” way too damn quickly in the span of a week. Which, based on how clueless and superficial she was before, comes off as simply unbelievable. Aaand, that neither of them (E&M) managed to fully understand Kate makes me hope that maybe, just maybe, we’ll get some type of resolution to this dynamic next season.
Lastly, the whole wedding episode was too long. And you’re right, also could have been done an episode earlier.

Totally agree with your take.. I too was wondering about the forgiveness part?? Yes Edwina’s maturity jump was insane. She told Kate that she didn’t ask for any of this, but she did. She told her that she wanted to be the viscountess, that was the life she wanted, she also brushed aside Kate’s warning at the poetry reading and walked over to Anthony. The final straw after the grandparents’ fiasco, was when she told Kate that she loved Anthony. Kate then pleaded with him not to break her sisters heart when he told her he will end the engagement so Anthony decided to marry the woman he didn’t love, because the woman he loved asked him to. These two sacrificing idiots. BTW Edwina never apologized for the “half sister and kinder hearted that you” bits. I did feel sorry for Edwina but she lost my empathy with these two comments.

What a great video! I love the way you imagine the Kanthony wedding and if it doesn’t happen I do hope you write that fanfic! I actually like both Eloise and Penelope and I kinda understand them both honestly, so I am looking forward to how they resolve this mess with them. I also think a lot of Colin’s drama is going to intensify once he learns the truth about Penelope. So here’s what I hope happens (though I doubt any of this will happen but let’s see):
    1) Penelope is still justifiably angry about what Colin said about her so she’s giving him the cold shoulder. I want him to write to her and wonder why she won’t respond, have maybe a few moments where he’s thinking “I wonder what Pen would think about this” and then remember that she doesn’t talk to him anymore. He also notices that Penelope and Eloise aren’t close anymore either, because he’s been looking out for Pen’s yellow dress out of habit. So maybe one day he asks Eloise what’s going on and she says nothing but her face gives away the fact that all isn’t well. Then Colin goes to call on Pen - the rest of the story is a blur in my head but at some point he needs to be called out on what he said and maybe that or the fact that he missed her makes him start to fall for her and the Whistledown reveal complicates his emotions
    2) Similar to what we saw with Daphne in S2 I really want Anthony to have a discussion with Colin about relationships. Maybe something like “ultimately you need to marry someone you’re willing to drop your guard for, someone who makes you feel heard and understood. You cannot love someone you don’t respect etc”. I’d really like for that to continue too, so Colin can have this conversation with Benedict in S4 like “the gossip will pass but choose the right person”, then Benedict counsels Eloise(?) and so on
    3) Speaking about Eloise, I think she’ll contact Marina now, maybe even go visit her while she tries to wrap her head around whatever is going on with Colin and Pen. Maybe Marina can speak to her about Penelope’s feelings for Colin and it makes her realise that she’s been so caught up in her own head that she’s missed a lot of things about Penelope’s internal life. The ultimate resolution of her conflict should ideally come from Kate, who can speak about her own clash with Edwina and how they’re working on their relationship now after better understanding one another, and they each owe that honesty to their respective sisterhoods
    4) Finally coming to Kate - Much as I would love to see babies and domestic bliss, I think they have a few steps to get through first. Last season was mostly about Anthony’s trauma so S3 needs to be about Kate and the stuff she deals with. I think Francesca will come out in S3 and meet her husband (I’m assuming people have not read her book so I won’t spoil anything, but Nicola did say there’s a new man in town) which puts a lot of pressure on Kate as the new Viscountess. We’ve seen that she’s stubborn and set in her ways so I definitely see her clashing a bit with Violet. Nothing too awful but just subtle things that make her feel uncertain. This poor girl doesn’t know how to have a Mother and I never got the feeling Violet was super fond of Kate anyway so there’s something to explore there. So Kate’s gone from managing her household to managing her husband’s much larger household and she doesn’t know how to ask for help. She’s selflessly helping Anthony with his work and helping his family with their lives and running herself ragged. So maybe she has an especially bad day, maybe she has a mildly antagonistic discussion with Violet about flowers or something and maybe Edwina visits and talks about how she cannot be sure that her current beau loves her after being hurt in the past, and maybe it’s thundering that night and she’s huddled by herself in the library. Anthony comes looking for her and says something mildly triggering completely on accident but she just goes off on him. On how she’s doing her best but it’s never enough, how he would have been better off with someone else, how she doesn’t know how to fix anything and she feels like she’s letting her Father down. And Anthony just lets her rant, then quietly reads to her until she falls asleep. Then the next day she’s setting up the ballroom and he maybe asks the footmen to clear the room, he just dances with her and explains that she doesn’t have to do things alone anymore, that she has and will always have him to lean on. I have this image in my head and it’s so cute, I just need to see it!
    That’s all, end of rant

"small moments of intimacy" "emotion nakedness" "emotional vulnerability" "emotional internal journey" "it's about their journey individually" "they bring the best in one another and encourage one another to be their truest self" "we want them to be happy individually and it's a bonus they find that happiness together"
YES. Just yes. That's the type of romance I enjoy the most. I think that's also why I tend to like friends-to-lovers because good friendship also has these elements so the base is here already.
I have similar unpopular opinions than you about Eloise. She has a lot of potential but I don't really like her. And in some ways, she wasn't that great a friend to Penelope either.
I hope they will overcome their issues and become actual good friends.
About the Marina stuff, I don't entirely agree. It's not as simple as Penelope just being vile and vindicative and Marina being the poor innocent girl that got ruined. Marina was far from an innocent person.
There were certainly some less pure intentions behind what she did. Yes, she was angry. But she also really wanted to save Colin from being tricked. Penelope tried to talk to Colin but he didn't listen. She tried to convince Marina to tell the truth, or to convince her to go for a man she wouldn't have to con into thinking it was a marriage of love or that the child was his, SEVERAL TIMES... But Marina not only didn't listen to her, she completely and cruelly mocked her. So while I do think Penelope should have dealt with this in a more private manner, she's also a 17 years old girl that no one takes seriously and no one listens to.
She probably had the same mindset that for the Eloise stuff: that no one would believe her. But people listen to Whistledown.
And I agree with you, how likable/forgivable a character (especially females) is perceived often seems to have to do with how conventionally attractive they are...
I like friends to lovers. And find Polin cute and heart-warming overall. I think Colin has romantic feelings for Penelope but doesn't realize them because, well, she's Pen, she's always been here.
But they DO need to grow up. Especially Colin. In the book, they help each other grow and become better persons and they sort of do to in the show (well, Penelope helps Colin grow/express the depth within that he only ever shows to her). So maybe that will be part of their story next season, having matured thanks to the previous events and the "time skip" between seasons. And yet again helping each other overcome their personal flaws. They also share interests so they can geek out about books and poetry and poke fun at the bad ones.

I agree with basically everything you said about S2. I would've liked it if things had come to a head sooner as well. Also, I think Edwina was in love with the idea of being in love. She certainly never saw the 'real' Anthony.
Your comments about the writing were really on point. I believe that they were writing the scripts was they were filming, and I think that shows up in Edwina particularly. The writing for her is all over the place.
As for S3 given where they left off at the end of S2 with the stories of Eloise and Colin with Penelope, it makes sense for them to do their story next. I do agree that there will be a lot of heavy lifting to get all of them to a point where them getting together makes sense, but then, that's the plot of S3. For those who read the books, I keep entertaining the idea that Portia should decide that she thinks Colin and Prudence should make a match, and pours all of her energy (similar to what she did with Felicity in the book) into that because it could be funny, and Bessie Carter would kill it.
I'm also not a fan of Eloise as she is in this series. She is clueless and privileged, and completely self absorbed. She is young as well, and definitely needs a lot of growing up. I totally agree with your comments regarding her as pertained to Daphne, and even her finally figuring out that Penelope is Lady Whistledown. If she paid any attention at all she would have figured it out along time ago.

Hard agree. What you said about S1 being about the physical intimacy and S2 about the emotional one is so spot on. And I am on the side of S2 all the way - not only the romance and characters were better, they were embodied so so well by the actors. Every expression was there on purpose and that purpose was fulfilled. They weren't some cheap smirks or raised eyebrows - when Anthony says he's aggrivated, he also shows it 😂 I guess it all comes down to one's personal preference but I can't help thinking that Jonathan's performance as a romance hero was objectively better than Regé's (I'm not saying he's a bad actor).
I have read the books before the show was even announced and I very much enjoyed them (they have their problems but oh well). Some are better, some are worse, some are maybe even bad. I would maybe recommend Hyacinth's book, it's cute. And yes, Anthony and Kate are definitely much better in the show, they feel so alive. She is a confident lady and it's amazing, Anthony is... well just better in every way 😂 I don't really like what they did with Edwina - they kind of made her less observant and yeah, she does not really listen when people are telling her some important stuff (that she doesn't know Anthony, for instance), she didn't even listen to Anthony when he says what their marriage would be. She just doesn't understand, is in constant denial and like... why? She is not supposed to be dumb. And like you said, it's all fine I guess, but where is the apology, where is the understanding of Kate?
And can I just add, I am annoyed with the Queen meddling in everything. She's so irritating to me, she literally just enjoys ruining people's (Eloise's and therefore her family's) lives because some gossip lady says it's kinda stupid to choose a diamond of the season but then she says Kanthony's great (they ARE of course) because she feels like it. She would just ruin a family on a stupid whim, why is she here, get a life -_- (and yes, I do feel sorry for her, I know it's not easy living with the man you love who barely remembers you, but I still do not support her pettiness; when George IV, her son ironically, was called Prince of Whales by caricaturists and the press, he did not hunt them down to destroy them, he just moved on, and the Queen is not even outright insulted like that).
Now Penelope vs. Eloise... In my opinion, they both did some shitty things. Penelope's are just bigger in scope (we all know them, I also don't approve, but I like her as a character - she is resourceful, smart, attentive but also flawed and kind of awful at times). Eloise was a bad friend to put it simply. Just the fact she figured out that her best friend is Lady Whistledown with one conversation during which she actually listened is enough for me. She could have done that ages ago but she is so self-absorbed she treated Penelope as a thing that would listen to all she has to say, approve and not put their own worries on her. She doesn't care about others, not about Theo being caught and not about Penelope's life in general. She cares when she is wronged. I am on no one's side, they both should work on themselves.
Omg, I don't like Benedict's book either! I mean, it is just so generic, and that Cinderella plot was really not that great (but I am also biased against Cinderella-type of story, I've seen it too much) and also that power imbalance was just uncomfortable. I hope the showrunners add some flavour to the story, their Benedict is already better. I feel like the show switched Colin and Benedict in terms of their charm... I'll just say that I hope they rework Polin's story so that we can enjoy it as much as Kanthony, because I just want to see a great love story for a plus size girl ❤️

Regarding Edwina's desires: I honestly think there are some women who equate security (or titles and wealth in Edwina's case) with love. They are so enthralled with the idea of a secure marriage that they will "fall in love" with any amiable guy who will offer them security. I think Edwina falls into that category because she thinks she can "have it all". She is a little naive and her bubble is burst by season end.

I disagree with the notion that Anthony clearly states to her he does not seek love and that Daphne informs her that she does not know Anthony...
First of all, Daphne is cryptic about it. She could have easily go to Edwina and told her "girl, I know my brother very well, she Is not in love with you and you do not really know him". Instead, she makes few comments someone like Edwina easily passes as inconveniences.
It is clear that Edwina started crushing from episode 2 onwards. By the time of episode 5, she is head over heels for him.
Anthony wants to win Edwina. Yeah, he never declares that he loves her, but his dedication to win over her and her sister who activally sabotages him... why would she think that he puts with so much trouble just because she is a diamond?
If he bothered to give her some reality check similar to one in episode 6, things would have been much different.
He wants to spend time with her. He admires her and says she can teach him about the books. He admits he is not a poet, so it is understandable she does not expect him to declare. He shows her compassion, she defends her honour... By her understanding of love, she can definitely believe that Anthony fell for her hard. She is young and she does not know any better. And she knows very well that Kate is prejudiced, so any of her warnings she takes bit a grain of salt.

Thanks for this video, I’ll add it to my playlist of your S2 reactions (I’m listening to it when I’m doing chores).
About S3, I’m not fond of the tropes or Polin’s characters either but the writers have surprised me with their writing, which is more elevated from the source material imo, so I’m positive that I will watch something that will be entertaining. Now will I ship them? Probably not.
About Kanthony, if we take into consideration that Polin are in their 30s in the books it means that we will have a bigger time jump than the one season of S2, plus I read the other day Johnny’s interview for S2 were he described Anthony in the future about how he will be as a husband and how he will grow more as a person being a father. That makes me think that they will be already married for 6-7 years, which I’m not mad about, I think anything we’ll get with Kanthony will be great.
About Sophie, I hope that we get to meet her (at the masquerade ball) and then see her again in S4.

Very good analysis, I agree with almost everything you say. No, take that back. I agree with everything you say! Especially about Kanthony, Edwina, too little time for reconciliation between the sisters, and the good changes they made in the show compared to the book, especially to the characters.
But there is one thing I do miss from the book, which you don't mention:
In the book Kate develops feelings for Anthony while at the same time slowly changing her opinion about his character for the better. Just before the bee sting scene she comes to realize and even tells him, that she has to withdraw her objections to him courting Edwina. She admits to being prejudiced before, but that his actions have shown her, that he is a man to be admired and someone she would want to have as a friend. These scenes include him escorting Penelope to dinner ("He is a hero"), after Cressida insulted her. And of course the much longer library scene in the book. In the show we only see Kate realizing that his devotion to family is at least as fierce as hers is. We get enemies to lovers but we don't get enemies to friends and lovers, which is how I saw (and liked) it in the book.

Like you, I watched the show first before reading the books. And 100% prefer the show better. The book just has a lot of morally grey unrealistic situations that made me feel so icky a lot of the times. I'm all for the changes in the show. It made their characters much more complex.
And although I'm already kinda biased that show s3 will be better than the books, I'm planning to read Colin's book first and see if I will give them more points.
For Benedict's story, I've read his book as a teen yearsss ago so I'm excited to reread it again and see how my perspective has changed. Cause I remember feeling weird with Benedict's character and actions back then but not yet understanding that it could be a red flag. So rereading it with an adult's persepective will be interesting. But for his story it's definitely show Benedict > book Benedict. Though I still have a few issues with show Benedict's character

Edwina/Kate resolution was lacking(I wish Edwina SAW kanthony and realised that THIS is what love looks like and acknowledged their soulmate-ness), all show!scenes(bee sting, library) feel much grounded and well rounded, plus better character motivations(Anthony being convinced he will die before 40, ughh what is he,12?), and Polin does feel boring(they forgot to give colin a personality), (yes I wish library scene was longer, more kanthony guys just give it to us😭)

What I am hoping is that they wrote Colin into that melancholy and flat state to bring a shock of energy to his and Penelope's energy in their romance.

I felt that the writers and costuming, wigs all made Penelope much less beautiful than she really is, let's say even in her robe, by candlelight while she's writing, vs all those bows and curls and horridly non flattering clothing. Colin was written so far off of his sweet, funny, charming character in the book. I think that they are both virgins as well (remember what Anthony said to him in the library in season 1 about taking him to brothels? I am hoping for a really sensual, possibly awkward at first romance that builds

Then lets not forget her father gambled away her dowery. Is she crying in her bedroom saying “Why me?” No. Pen, who is still a teenager, is trying to have more control of her life in a world that does not give much to women. Is she bound to make mistakes? Of course. She walking this path alone. No one is guiding her or giving her feedback. Finally, despite her undying love for Colin, she is not waiting for him to rescue her. She needs to ensure that she will be ok financially.

I agree with the switch up in season order, to me they’ve got a much harder road setting up Benedict, and Eloise’s romances and getting the audience to even recall Francesca then they do with Penelope and Colin. My theory is that…the show is gonna have Queen Charlotte croak ( the real queen died in like 1811ish) thus the stakes on the Whistledown thing goes down a major notch to the reveal from the book and we’re going to get a more Kiss kiss slap slap slapstick scenario for P and C while setting the next few siblings up in the subplots. That’s the hope anyway that they’re more waylaid by silly personality things then angst

For me, I loved the story so much better because Anthony seemed so 'flawed' where Daphne was, and still is, a character that you expect to have a halo of light constantly following her around lol. I also think, for me, it was because we knew the characters better than when the show began (obviously lol). We could see more growth in the characters as well as some progress on their development and motivations.

I also love how they characterize the girls on the show. They are all strong, powerful and fighters in their own way. With the cards that touched them in life. With errors and contradictions, of course, but real. Kate Sharma (I love her) Penelope, Eloise, the Queen, Madame Delacroix, Lady Dambury, Siena in season 1. All fighters. That was one of the biggest changes in relation to the books (in fact, it was deeper in the show) In addition to the racial and cultural diversity of course. That greatly enriched everything. (And more if they incorporated some queer character) At least for me, it left me (or would leave me) with a beautiful feeling of how the world should be...

YES? to EVERYTHING??? Jokes aside, YES I do agree w SO much of what you said. Esp abt show s2 being BETTER than (season 1 obvs and) the book. The first kiss, the whole dead-by-38yo, the THUNDERSTORMS thing (tbh I had a hard time reading that I thought the whole description of Kate's mother passing was unnecessary and over the top and iffy to read)... so much better w/o. I have NOT read Benedict's book bc just by the prompt I felt weird but I HAVE read Polin, Eloise and Francesca and I THINK (and I have friends who have read them all that agree) that the SHOW might be swapping Hyacinth's story for Eloise, bc book!Eloise is RADICALLY different and her storyline as of now ...can't happen, basically.
I did not overly enjoy Polin's book, even that felt rushed and too much abt Lady W than well, Penelope and Colin tbh.
Completely aside, but I looooved Francesca's book, she's probably my favourite sibling and her arc is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻. I'd translate well on screen too and I'd looooove to see it.

one thing i seem to be in disagreement with the fandom in general is the kanthony baby. i think the flashback scene of anthony and violet during hyacinth's birth and his overall situation with mortality can be the "struggle" they face in s3. as you said they fixed the mortality fixation of book!anthony but made it as in fear of losing people he loves. he already faced that fear twice literally with kate in bee and falling scene and also emotionally all the time tbh. and seeing the scene with his mom giving birth i dont think anthony would be easily thrilled to have kids because he fears for kate and possible bad things that can happen to her bc of the pregnancy. and i also think they should just be with themselves for a while, be selfish, just enjoy each other before another duty comes upon them. theyre already loaded with responsibility and even though the 6 month honeymoon away from family was refreshing i dont wanna see them having a kid immediately in s3. i want them to cherish each other more. maybe a kid in s4 etc would be better for me.

I agree with everything you said! I wanted to like Edwina and I was trying to up until Ep.6 after which I just gave up. The writing for her was so choppy, they wrote her character like a modern young woman with a westernized worldview instead of a 19th century girl with a desi worldview. A desi girl in that era would have never dreamed of speaking to her older sister- one that she’s addresses as Didi with such disrespect no matter what she had done. That title ‘didi’ comes with certain expectations of behaviour and I’m sorry - but the writers did not consider this aspect at all when writing Edwina. Also that moment when she says - I have made up my own mind and that is victory enough for me? Wtf was that? They kept telling us this wasn’t a fight but that statement made it seem like it was. Besides, Charithra herself said Edwina was considering marrying Anthony to save their families from ruin right until that moment with the Queen, after knowing her sister and Anthony had feelings for each other and that Kate would leave her and go to India forever. It was only after that moment with the King and the Queen enabling her, and reassuring her that she would bear no repercussions for her decision was she empowered to choose not to marry him. Then how did she ‘make up her own mind?’ I would have bought the half sister comment if Edwina had been hurt that Kate had kept such a huge thing from her- not because she felt betrayed but because she was hurt that her sister did not trust her enough. She could have accused Kate of not telling her what was in her heart because Kate was treating her like a half sister and not a real one, because if she had considered Edwina her own, she wouldn’t have held back from telling her and that tbh would have been so much more satisfying. They could have examined their relationship and done some introspection because they had both made mistakes. Instead we got Edwina looking like the bigger person for letting go and ‘advising’ Kate not to play a role and being her true self. It was hard to swallow that sudden maturity in Ep 8 after the way she behaved before. So yeah, the writers did not do Edwina or Kate justice by creating this whole mess of a triangle.
