Hi Paul. Apparently some people are saying if you have a purple tint around the one connect box it means you have the newer version with the updated PCB that's solved the dropout issues at higher refresh rates from last years S95C, so there's that at least.
As I also own a Sony master series OLED, the matte screen on the S95d is literally the best thing about that tv, and is the only reason that I kept mine, for everything else I would have returned it. There is no black level issue that you speak of, the Tizen is garbage, no DV may or may not be an issue depending on what you watch, the one connect box makes installation more difficult, the sound is trash when wall mounted, can’t do any smart features without agreeing to a bunch of nonsense, can’t even update it without agreeing to nonsense. If you don’t like the processing, put it in Filmaker or movie mode and it is fantastic, any other mode looks like trash for most sources.
Great review which I think is spot on. June 2024, I purchased the Samsung S92C 65" OLEC (2023 model). It is not the greatest tv out there, but I don't care as I only paid £974 (direct from Samsung courtesy of bluelight card) with a C430 Soundbar with sub-woofer thrown in for free. At that price I can live with its faults and limitations 🙂
Bought the S95C for Ps5, the moment I did see the matt display for the 2024 Samsung top model. Love my 77 S95C without blackouts on Ps5. Came from a L CX 65inch
The thing is there are LG fan boys Samsung fan boys an Sony fan boys and if you don't have something good to say about the tv they on they cry like baby's just remember there is no perfect tv
Last year I was sure to buy an A95L 77 inch, but as the G4 looked really promising and I could get it for 1.200 € less than the Sony, I just couldn't resist. They are so close and the G4 has way more features and better DV and near black performance. I'm sorry Sony, but I don't pay over 1.000 € extra to get a 5% better picture in some content and lose some benefits and features at the same time 😅
I am a LG OLED fan boy but I am going to try the Samsung. I just hate the remote from LG. I have Samsung Air Con and other devices connected to smartthings App and like it.
We just got an S95C and have been using an HDFury Vertex 2 to get Dolby Vision from our Apple TV. Many say there should be no difference between DV and HDR10(+) but to all of us it looks way better, especially when playing through infuse from our PLEX server. I actually think we'd have liked the matte coating, but the price was almost double what we got the S95C for, and so far it's been brilliant! Thanks for the great vid as always.
Surely though if the tv doesn't do dolby vision native any add on box that has dolby vision the tv will just show as hdr10 or hdr10+ or hlg as its the chips inside the tv that process the signal to what the tv can display, you can play a dolby vision blu ray and the samsung will just play it as hdr10
@@smaza2009 Not entirely true. LLDV as from the Apple TV and similar sources is actually decoded in the player not the TV, so HDFURY devices spoof the EDID to the player (telling it the capabilities of the panel) and it processes the DV, and sends it to the TV as HDR10 with the metadata pre-processed. The trick is telling the player to do the decode, and then forcing the TV into HDR mode. The device handles both tasks. It's pretty awesome.
@@armandosain7323 Apple TV+ and the Apple purchases are compatible if you have the latest Apple TV 4K, and it's pretty comparable to DV (maybe even better). The problem is that Disney Plus, Netflix, etc. still prefer DV, and their HDR10 presentations aren't always on par IMO.
@Category5 isn't that what I said though, a tv that cannot display dolby vision will only display a dolby vision signal in hdr10 it cannot surely display any true dolby vision content as the control chip for the tv is not dolby licensed
Thanks, nice collection of worth things :-) I love the Samsung UI (I have the S95B) over LG(E7) and same for the remote controller. But a very good video indeed. What comes to the Dolby Vision, I don't know. I don't see any difference to be honest :-) Anyways it would be nice to have it though.
Samsung don't support DTS passthrough either so if you have a Blu-ray player then you cannot use the best audio format. This, the lack of Dolby Vision support and the reports of quality control issues are why I'd never buy a Samsung TV personally, although I have experience of using them from my parent's own TVs (one of which the LED backlighting failed after just 11 months of owning it). QD-OLED is also a promising technology but the elevated black levels when there's ambient light (which is not because of the matte screen coating) is really the only disappointing thing about the screen itself, having been using one (and to watch this video) with my PC in the form of the 27" Alienware AW2725DF QD-OLED monitor which I've owned since February 2024. Not bothered about Dolby Vision or DTS audio for gaming though and I was always interested in seeing how QD-OLED compared with OLED (I own an LG C3 evo TV).
What I wonder about is, dont QD-OLED displays raise their black levels in bright light anyways? Shining purple or grey? So dont do all QD-OLEDs do this? Not only the Samsung one? Or is this even enhanced by the matte display?
I agree about knowing the good and the bad , but I don't think any of things you mentioned would stop me from buying an s95d there just small things which tv has .
Another great video Paul, yeah agree really can't see why samsung won't just pay the license and have dolby vision, and I wondered how the matt finish might affect the blacks, I guess they just trying something new, be interesting to see what they do for next years models. Proper calibration is one good way to correctly get the tv set up, I know some tvs now offer a calibration setting using the phone camera not sure how good they are compared to a professional maybe that could be a future video. Maybe a viewer might know of a calibration guy near your location be good to see them do their magic. I had my q90t done after I brought and really cannot fault the difference it has made to watching films and even gaming. Keep up the great videos
Great job Paul. You always call it right down the middle with these types of reviews. That being said. A matte screen on an OLED tv is blasphemy and then Samsung still refuses to add DV is just plain stupid on their part. But it is what it is. A person can buy what they want because it's their money. Buy it and enjoy the hell out of it no matter what brand you decide to buy.
