How To Build An Intel NUC Mini PC - Adding RAM Memory and NVMe M.2 SSD Storage To A NUC8i3BEH
In this video I'm revisiting another Intel NUC and also another NUC8i3BEH. This time I'm showing how to build an Intel NUC Mini PC with a Samsung EVO 970 Plus 250GB NVMe M.2 SSD for storage and a couple of 4GB DDR Sodimm memory modules by Crucial.
I personally think that the 8th Gen NUC is the sweet spot so far, especially the i3 or the i5 versions. The one I'm using is an i3 which is the Intel® Core™ i3-8109U Processor which is a dual core with four threads. The 8th Gen NUC series also has the excellent Intel® Iris® Plus Graphics 655 iGPU or integrated graphics processor, basically a GPU graphics card.
As mentioned in the video I've already tried out the NUC with Chrome OS. This is proper Chrome OS as found on any Google Chromebook and not Chromium OS. Chrome OS also allows runs with many apps from the Google Play Store just like a typical Android device. Chrome OS is awesome on the NUC and game play is fantastic. I suspect this is mostly due to the Intel Iris Plus 655 iGPU.
I also tried a couple variations of Android-X86 with the NUC, Phoenix OS and Darkmatter. As with Chrome OS, Android on the NUC is awesome. Android-X86 is basically a port of standard Android that's designed to run on X86 CPU architecture, such as those CPUs by Intel and AMD. Android usually runs on ARM processors.
A quick run with Windows 10 on the NUC was also great. While the NUC flashed through typical day to day PC stuff, web browsing, emailing, RUclips, streaming video from Netflix etc. streaming audio and typical office type stuff. I suspect the this NUC would also be good for some light video editing and music production. I'll try it with Edius soon which is the NLE I use and also Cubase which is a DAW and music production software.
I'll post some future videos of this NUC setup once I've give it a good hammering :)

Many businesses that endorse these pint-sized underdogs often experience slowness and have a hard time getting around the daily workflow, but an upgrade like this could surely remedy the issue.

Damn, my NUC is the thin one, without the SATA cache, I just noticed. I think I was thinking I have so many external HDDs lying around I won't need an internal storage beyond the M.2. But now I'm jealous...

Hi Paul. NUCs are awesome and can easily replace a full size PC for most uses. You’d be able to build a similar spec full size PC for less but that requires building with many different components and is more involved. NUCs are great when there’s limited space or if you want to keep them out of site attached to the back of your monitor via the VESA mount and they’re great for the living room as they look like a small streaming box. If you need high end graphics for gaming or rendering, NUCs are no good as it’s unbelievably cost prohibitive to connect a PCIe GPU via Thunderbolt external GPU case. For day to day PC use, home office etc. there are cheaper Mini PC alternatives but their builds are generally not as good as Intel’s and you’ll generally find that NUCs are more powerful. I generally have one sitting next to my second monitor on my edit system and switch to it for certain stuff when my main edit machine is busy. As for Edius, it’s amazing. I’ve used it now for about 12 years and have done all kinds of stuff with it, a couple of feature films with my old indie film company, a bunch of stuff for TV, many hundreds of things for RUclips and whole bunch of other stuff. The only problem is that it’s not cheap, the Workgroup version is around £1000/$1000. I actually started on Premier about 25 years ago, I sometimes dabble with it because it’s my first love but I find Edius easier and more powerful. Edius also has a few functions that are very quick to use. All that reframing in this video is done in real-time and is very easy and quick to do. I may do a video soon showing a quick overview of Edius. Cheers, Dave.

Really good video, Harry. I've just started using Lenovo Tiny PC's at work for general office use - but would like to get into the NUC platform.
I'm I able to install both an M2 & SSD with the NUC?
      Cheers dude

Hi Shafiq. Sorry mate, I totally missed this comment. Yes, you can have both an M.2 and SATA connected at the same time internally. The SATA can either be a SSD or mechanical, spinning hard drive. If you look at something like this one, or anything that’s 8Th generation and above with at least an i3 CPU, they are really good at most things. This one is even powerful enough for doing HD video editing and photo editing. Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry Cheers Dude... That's good to know. Really tempted on getting one. If it's good enough to edit video then photo editing should be a breeze 👍

How to build an Intel NUC.....buy a Chromebox and attach it to a video card via mini pci-e, and replace Chrome with Windows 10.
