I really dislike the sliver of space inbetween the sidebars and the rulers. May look cool at 1st but serves no purpose, reduces work area / canvas siz and is distracting after a few minutes of actual work. hopefully they create a toggle to revert back

Yeah I can see that! It definitely feels odd at first. There actually is a toggle to go back to the old UI if you don't enjoy using the new one!
I agree. Even a mode that just attached the panels to the edges/top/bottom would help a lot!
