This "kid's movie" was so dark. The fact that the old man did the ultimate sacrifice, turning himself into a villain, scaring off kids and the community, all of them never knowing he was protecting all of them from being murdered by the possessed house, that was so dark and sad. He would rather be hated and isolated rather than let another human being be devoured and killed. Edit: You know how when you're such an evil person who did the most attrocious things like chiId serial kiIIers, people say HeII has a special place for you. For Nebbercracker, it's the opposite, Heaven has a special place for him. Like I said before, he made people hate him and alienate him to save them. He chose to be hated and alone rather than let others get hurt. That is both one of the saddest and most noble thing a person could ever possibly do.
I loved it. Then again I’m a big horror fan and have a soft spot for a lot of these horror themed animated kids movies. But I actually thought it was really well done character and plot wise. Definitely underrated
The thing is, they knew EXACTLY how to make the atmosphere uncomfortable. First it hit us with the fear every kid had, the creep house. Second, it started talking about puberty, which is highly uncomfortable. Also just the characters look weird to a degree. Then there is the mean babysitter, which everyone hate being exploited and bullied. It also makes you feel uncomfortable by giving you the feeling of being home alone. And finally, the real scary part,it is all shot from the perspective of someone like you, a young, defenseless child. It puts you in the prospective of riley. Also a honorable mention is the part where the creepy guy falls and his corpse is on top of you, that's kinda creepy
Back in the day, someone at a weight like that WOULD be considered freakish enough to be in a freak show. It wasn't terribly uncommon for circuses to have a "World's fattest man/woman" exhibit with someone that you could easily see riding a rascal scooter around at a wal-mart today. Standards were just...very different back then.
Something I think this movie really gets right is its atmosphere. There's always this sort of creeping sense of unease and dread, even during the sort of comedic moments. It adds a hell of a lot to the whole creepy vibe this movie has.
As a kid, I always felt like even in the comedic moments the house was watching the boys and even us. So the entire movie felt like "there's someone watching me" and that's what made it so creepy to me
Fully agree! Each time i watched it, it felt surreal. Almost as if it actually happened. Sometimes I would dream of living in their world because it felt so calm each time I'd watch it. Dunno how, but it's how it is for me. 😅😂
What I adore most about this movie is that this was all filmed in mocap so the voice actors weren’t just sitting in booths reading lines they were on sets in mocap suits and acted out everything and it looks fantastic
I've seen a lot of people say the movie looks dated now and stuff, but I honestly really love the charm of it. It's very well done for what it is and I don't think they look weird imo
Ngl, the story of Constance reminds me of that quote about how people don’t notice your sadness until it turns to anger and suddenly you’re the bad guy. Constance wasn’t really a monster. She was mistreated and abused.
If I’m being honest, the only part of the movie that scared me as a kid is the scene with Constance falling into the hole. It wasn’t until I was older when I realized she fell into the hole but was covered by cement. This movie really feels impactful when you realize Mr. Nebbercracker was only mean just so the surrounding area would stay away from his house. He’s been doing it for so long that it affected him mentally and emotionally. Constance is really a sympathetic “villain” when she was abused and taunted since she was part of a traveling freak show. Even as an adult, I still love this movie for its art style, animation, characters, the plot, the twist and everything.
I've always thought of never cracker that way he was just trying to protect kids from getting literally fucking eaten and when you think about it all he has left of his wife is his house
It took you until you were adult to notice it was cement? It took me at the age like 10 or 8 if I remember correctly and I was very into horror stuff at the time and this movie specifically is such a damn good classic I loved it and I still do I hoped they could make something like a sequel when the kids grew up I can expect something similar to It that's how good it was when I watched it.

One of my fave details about the movie is that all of the house’s onscreen victims (the cops, Bones, the dog) are not seen again until after the end credits, so if you leave as soon as the film ends, your left with the impression that they all just straight up *died.* Sweet dreams, kiddos!
Fun fact: the after credits scenes were added only so the movie received the PG rating because the original version did not feature them and those people actually died
@@lenarteler4453 I kinda like that, actually. When I watched it as a kid, it felt like a genuine horror movie but one that my parents would let me watch.
@@kondoesroblox69420 Eh, I think kids can handle darker stuff more than a lot of us realize. It’s the same thing with Coraline, where it can be terrifying but as long as it’s not gruesome and there’s a happy ending, kids will end up enjoying it. It’s like the one quote; “Fairy tales do not tell children that monsters exist. Children already know that monsters exist. Fairy tales tell children that monsters can be killed.”

The fact that we thought he was the villain says a lot about this movie and its plot… it took me so many years to realize it was actually the wife/house that was really the monster… Quite literally. he wasn’t trying to be a douche, he was actually the hero and I’m glad he got saved in the end. Sometimes the hero needs saving too, this movie was ahead of its time.
Either he didn't know how to protect kids from his consumed-with-hurt house, or he figured terrifying them that way keeps them away while also ensuring nobody would try to drmolish his house. I like the second option best - that it's the best option he has... Makes it sadder.
I was so obsessed with this movie when I was a kid that my dad bought the DVD from Blockbuster cause he was over me wanting to rent it out every week. I watched it over and over til the disk got scratched up and wouldn't go past the scene where the monster house is calling Zee's house. Honestly, I was always more creeped out over the art style rather than the story, but it has held up so well over the years! A must-watch every Halloween season for me, next to Coraline.

@@maybelyndsNo shame there. I'm over 20 and as soon as I saw this vid's thumbnail I was shaking to my core especially remembering THAT scene that traumatizes me as a child till now :")
This movie kicked ass. I liked how they didn't pull their punches, from the story to the dialogue, the jokes and all sorts of little things. It respects the audience.
Nah this film was kinda crazy for a kids movie I mean the babysitters boyfriend was abusive, Chowders mum was cheating on his dad, nebbercrackers wife was found as a literal cemented corpse LIKE THIS FILM WAS JUST A WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL!!!
I remember getting hyped for this movie when it was announced, the concept of an enraged spirit being embodied in a home was so cool. Their website had this Flash design when you'd go in it'd start with viewing the house from DJs bedroom window while a dim light slowly came out showing a CCVT analog camera pointing at it among other things(would even flash the monster house's face from the tv every now and then). It had a bunch of little games in it too with a hangman style basketball game you'd play while hearing chowder and DJ quips, and a Castlevania clone. There was also an illustrative version of when the guy explained what a monster house was with all these depictions of various monster houses throughout the ages, I hope there's an archive of the website somewhere on wayback because I don't think anyone's seen those drawings.
Ugh old websites were just different, now it's just blogs and company sites. Smoother gimmicks and companies offering to build websites but the age when browser games and companies with unique interactive games were the best days of the internet
That basement scene was amongst the creepiest shit Ive ever seen as a child, it haunted me for a long time. Appart from truly getting the horror right, the movie is freaking hillarious. That one scene alone where the video player runs out, then runs back, chomps up some chips while looking DJ straight in the eyes, then running out again is probably the funniest scene ever.
Nah the part where they’re trapped in the police car & the trees start thrashing em into the house😭 scary asf, especially after watching the house eat the cops
The shot from the house's POV when DJ and Chowder are looking through the window as a crack on it forms across DJ's NECK was a shot that always stuck with me. It was so subtle that I didn't even notice it after tons of rewatches. What an elegant, wordless manner of conveying just how much this furious house wants to KILL this kid.
Fun fact: the Polish dub of this film (which I'm the most used to), aside from being absolutely top tier includes some actual swearing - not euphemisms or fakeouts but the real deal. I was honestly very surprised when I discovered that they're absent in the original, they make the movie a lot more real and grounded. Not to mention they're also absolutely hilarious and give the kid audience the feeling they're watching something "adult".
Everytime the house is eating someone, and nobody seeing it got me thinking, maybe the house is capable of illusions or sum, like that the House can choose who sees what’s really going on in that Moment.
@@456loveluckI don’t think she’s the bad guy either it’s just a tragedy all around, she was a very traumatised human and her shocking death created a destructive spirit

They wrote this around the time the website they created, Channel 101, started to get traction, as it was basically RUclips before RUclips became popular, which is why this got green lit into becomin an actual film.

Monster House is a good example of how, imo, the uncanny valley (from the old mo-cap technology from the time) can be used to great effect when it comes to horror! I also recommend people look up the concept art for this movie too - the art style is so cool/creepy, and it's like if Norman Rockwell went through a Goth phase! ^^ Also, spooky bts fact: The inside of the house was going to be way, way worse: like human organs everywhere levels! 0_0
@@kondoesroblox69420 I'm not sure if it originally was planned to be a full-blown R-rated horror movie or not, but have heard that bts fact from some other commenters and from TV Tropes that the human organs thing was in one of Dan Harmon's older drafts for the movie.
@@Scarshadow666 I'm glad they nixed that. It doesn't really make sense. After all, it's her spirit possessing the house, not her body. Just as the house doesn't have an actual heart (or uvula), other human organs would have been out of place.

This was my childhood back in my day when it came out the graphics seemed so real to little me but all in all I loved it soooooooo much You make the voice over so funny
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid and only recently rewatched it after what seems like forever. I didn't expect it to be as well written as it was. I loved all the little details in the script
Oh my God I remember After I was done watching the movie I was in bed trying to sleep but I was looking at the tv and I seen the jumpscare and somehow I was not scared of it and I kept watching the house each time until I went to sleep.. It was also Easter.
The picture of the wife in the house always gave me the chillest of chills. I’m thankful I never had nightmares but it shook me to my core. I think I was seven when this came out. My cousins had the monster house game for GameCube. Forget about it, couldn’t get past the first level. It was the wife that always scared me, her scrunched face and glasses scared tf outta me
I think the reason why Monster House isn’t talked about as much as say Coraline or other child friendly horror movies is because they didn’t just focus on what scared children. They used topics that also tend to horrify adults. Now don’t get me wrong, Monster House did scare adults a little but more in the way of them remembering a house in their neighborhood like it from when they were a child. Coraline was different in that aspect. When the movie first came out, I worked in a theater. I remember how adults with children would ask me about whether or not I thought it was too scary for children. My response was, it may. There will be some aspects that will scare them like the Other Mother. Then I would also tell them that it will frighten them. That there is a core of the story that will definitely disturb them. These adults waved away my warning. By the end of the movie, without fail, these same adults would walk out of the movie deeply disturbed and told me so. “When you warned me… I didn’t think you knew what you were talking about. It looked like a horror movie that my child would enjoy… I was so wrong. It terrified me in ways that I didn’t think possible.” Another movie like Coraline that tended to disturb adults was Paranorman! Adults would go see it with their children and walk out… again, deeply disturbed. Why? Both movies and others like it, featured topics that children mostly wouldn’t understand but the adults absolutely would. Coraline was preyed upon in her own house! She was lured away with treats, games, and the promise of better parents who would listen to her and spend time with her. What does that remind you of? Paranorman was a child who was an outcast for being different in a way that made adults upset. He was a child chosen for a particular task that had been passed down his family for generations. A task that he would lead him to discover a horrific secret that all started because people were afraid of a child that was different. They did something horrible to the child simply because they feared her. Something that actually has been done before and will be done again. Both movies focused on fears adults have… if they have children in their lives. Note: If I remember correctly another reason this movie didn’t do so well was the animation itself. Although it looked very well made… the issue that many had was the way they modeled the humans of this world. I remember seeing an interview with the director and how they wanted to make everyone look reasonably like humans do. But many felt they strayed too far in doing so… and it suffered because of it. In the words of one critic that always stuck in my mind: the humans were ugly. When I first saw a trailer for Monster House, I will admit that the humans truly put me off of watching it. It did seem interesting but… the humans. One could make the argument that the same could be said about Paranorman which is fair. But the reason why the humans were not seen in the same light was because they were using it more for the atmosphere.
Is true, Monster House is scary, but would just scare the kids, Coraline and ParaNorman are movies that deliver what parents may fear the most than anything in the world...have their kids taken away, hurt, used and/or killed...and this is very effective in these movies, cause parents took their kids to watch it, it was perfect! And even better, they didn't expect it, they were like, "Eh, I am taking little Timmy to watch a silly cartoon horror movie, so if he gets too scared, I will comfort him. ^^", they just didn't expect that they would also need said comfort during the movie!
I was also thinking about Paranorman while watching this!! But I will say Monster House has some elements like what you're talking about: the fear of losing a loved one prematurely and never moving on, becoming a shell of who you once were and intentionally driving off every innocent thing that turns your way. Honestly the reason Coraline scared me was of how easy it was for the Other Mother to mutilate her 'children.' It goes against nature in so many ways to do something like that to your children and it's a scary premise for both mother and child in the theater. which reminds me that I _did_ watch all three of them in theaters with my mom as a kid...

Another creepy 3d animated movie i watched was one about Scrooge, and oh boy, that shit was terrifying to me as a kid. One of the 3 spirits that show up to haunt Scrooge is a actual ghost and another is Death itself.
is that the one with Pete as the ghost of Christmas future? Pete was so intimidating there he only showed up for 1 minute but that was easily one of my favorite Pete moments edit: oh nvm, you were talking about a movie 😂
Monster house was the first kids horror movie I saw, and I was terrified, especially when the kids enter the house and discover its secret that reveal, music, and tone of the scene was perfect.
The timing for this video is crazy. Went to a party last night and my friend little cousins were watching this in the living room. Made me so happy that kids still watch it
I remember being scared of this until now when I saw that part were the wife fell because she proceeded to stop and then drop the level and then continue to fall I would replay that moment every time just to laugh at it 😂
Its based on a horror story by Stephan king i think (a horror author that made a story about a woman put into a copper coffin alive and the house pretty much retaliated against the brother)
Monster house is by far my favorite "kids" horror movie. I loved the visuals and even the little piano keys at times. I absolutely love the little things of good horror movies like this.
That thing was the scariest thing ive seen 😭😭😭 wasnt it the house slowly coming to life as the carpet tongue slowly reached towards you and you couldnt run away from the menu, scariest shit
Idk why I didn't even react, those just makes me laugh because it is hella sudden lol Maybe this one not so sudden since he did say jumpscare but still, brainrotted the hell out of me with fnaf jumpscares (and cut-off too)
I remember having hiccups as a kid, and my mom put on this movie to scare the hiccups away. And it worked. Movies like this one and Coraline scared the absolute shit out of child me.
Oh bro, you earned a subscriber. Your editing and delivery is really funny and solid, and “It’s the reason I’m still scared of suburbs to this day.” had me cackling. Keep this up, my man 😂🔥❤️
Monster House was the first movie I ever watched in a movie theater. Personally since I've always enjoyed horror I wasn't really scared but it left a deep impression on me. I think about it from time to time, feeling sad for Constance and Nebbercracker.
And more so, abandon his wife, whaatever her form had become.
No protecting the kids from his wife
Ehh more like grey clouds in a thunderstorm not really the dead of night silence dark you know?
@@taddad2641 he never abandoned his wife

It goes to show how thought out each scene was in the perspective and the timing in visual imagery.
Who’s Riley?
@@febbledebble Inside out

The creepiest thing ever that they put it in first person perspective that’s literally the scariest.
I feel like the fat shaming helped public health a little bit.
Something I think this movie really gets right is its atmosphere. There's always this sort of creeping sense of unease and dread, even during the sort of comedic moments. It adds a hell of a lot to the whole creepy vibe this movie has.
NO
Yeah, has that creepy October night feel almost reminds me of Trick r Treat
As a kid, I always felt like even in the comedic moments the house was watching the boys and even us. So the entire movie felt like "there's someone watching me" and that's what made it so creepy to me
Fully agree! Each time i watched it, it felt surreal. Almost as if it actually happened. Sometimes I would dream of living in their world because it felt so calm each time I'd watch it. Dunno how, but it's how it is for me. 😅😂
I actually already watched this when I was 9 man 😂
What I adore most about this movie is that this was all filmed in mocap so the voice actors weren’t just sitting in booths reading lines they were on sets in mocap suits and acted out everything and it looks fantastic
I've seen a lot of people say the movie looks dated now and stuff, but I honestly really love the charm of it. It's very well done for what it is and I don't think they look weird imo
@@InkHyaena yeah especially with how iffy making a cgi movie done in Motion capture it looks really good for the technology at the time

Ngl, the story of Constance reminds me of that quote about how people don’t notice your sadness until it turns to anger and suddenly you’re the bad guy. Constance wasn’t really a monster. She was mistreated and abused.
She wasn't a monster until she became monster house 😎
And she kinda had anger issues but not really her fault

@@cintaminbunny oh shit mb didnt see that part
"Hey relax, youre not a murderer… It’s called manslaughter” killed me haha
That would be a second manslaughter.
That scene scared the living shit out of me as a kid 😂

1.The bad news:we are sinners and because of our sin we are separated from God and deserve punishment in hell because of our sins
We are sinners in need of a Savior
(Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”)
2.The good news:Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins,He was buried & rose from the dead to give you eternal life through Him.Jesus took away our punishment for sin and bridged the gap between humans and God.Jesus is the only way, truth and life no one goes to the Father except through Him.

1 corinthians 15:3-4For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
3.How can you be saved?
You are saved by the grace of God through faith alone in Jesus and not of your own good works, acts 16:31Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved. Cast yourself upon Him. Trust in His blood that He shed on the cross for your forgiveness of sins and His resurrection which has the power to remove your sins and to replace them with the perfect righteousness of Christ.
John 3 16:God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Also, spooky bts fact: The inside of the house was going to be way, way worse: like human organs everywhere levels! 0_0
Thanks for the fun facts! I love learning about behind the scenes stuff.
Was this movie meant to be pg rated from the start?!?! there's no way they would include that bts fact in the movie if it was meant to be pg rated
@@kondoesroblox69420
I'm not sure if it originally was planned to be a full-blown R-rated horror movie or not, but have heard that bts fact from some other commenters and from TV Tropes that the human organs thing was in one of Dan Harmon's older drafts for the movie.
@@Scarshadow666 I'm glad they nixed that. It doesn't really make sense. After all, it's her spirit possessing the house, not her body. Just as the house doesn't have an actual heart (or uvula), other human organs would have been out of place.

Jesus loves you❤️ and He wants you to have eternal life,do you want to be saved?
Here's how to be saved:
1.The bad news:we are sinners and because of our sin we are separated from God and deserve punishment in hell because of our sins
We are sinners in need of a Savior
(Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”)
2.The good news:Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins,He was buried & rose from the dead to give you eternal life through Him.Jesus took away our punishment for sin and bridged the gap between humans and God.Jesus is the only way, truth and life no one goes to the Father except through Him.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 10:9 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:10 “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
Romans 10:13 “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lords will be saved.”
Put your faith and trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior and *repent* of your sins(no longer living for yourself or what the flesh desires or for worldly things but now live for Christ through the Holy Spirit)

The picture of the wife in the house always gave me the chillest of chills. I’m thankful I never had nightmares but it shook me to my core. I think I was seven when this came out. My cousins had the monster house game for GameCube. Forget about it, couldn’t get past the first level. It was the wife that always scared me, her scrunched face and glasses scared tf outta me
I like how you’re keeping both monster house and coraline on a pedestal. I was obsessed with these movies growing up!
12:53 the CoryxKenshin background music bring the horror back man 😢
I think the reason why Monster House isn’t talked about as much as say Coraline or other child friendly horror movies is because they didn’t just focus on what scared children.
It terrified me in ways that I didn’t think possible.”
Another movie like Coraline that tended to disturb adults was Paranorman!
