    @catburner Try 8 deg. btdc, which is what the 1988 305 ( in the C1500 ) timing spec is. Install distributor only after the damper slot is aligned with 8 deg. btdc (compression stroke # 1 cyl.) When installed, the dist. rotor should point exactly at the # 1 cap terminal. Then tighten down and test with timing light. Should not harm engine.

    Please respond to me.. This is in my opinion the best vid on you tube very detailed but you missed one thing. Vacuum advance. So with vacuum advanced disconnected and plugged i am at 11 BTDC. When i connect the vacuum back up im at 30ish BTDC is this the correct way or did i mess up.

    • @carlh7795
      @carlh7795 9 лет назад

      Hook up your vacuum advance so it only sees vacuum when you crack open the throttle. Hooking it up to manifold vacuum (vacuum going to the dizzy when at idle) will give the engine a quicker, more peppy rev, but it's not correct and often causes detonation which isn't audible since the engine isn't under much load when at very low throttle angle.

    and I got a MSD 6al ignition box, does it will affect the reading?

  • @jfv65
    @jfv65 11 лет назад

    get a strobe light as the one in this vid, hook it up.
    disconnect the vac line of your dizzy (and plug it temporarily with a screw)
    start engine and let it idle (800-900rpm)
    aim the stobe light at the bellhousing on the carb side of the engine.
    if you see the 'steel ball' in the middle of the hole then your timing is OK.
    If not, twist the dizzy back and fro until you do see it.
    When done tighten the dizzy clamp bolt and re-attach the vac line.

    @catburner Static timing means "to install the distributor at the specified timing" as indicated on the emission sticker. When the timing pointer is at , say 12 deg. BTDC on the compression stroke, then install your distributor.
    You don't install the distributor at 0 deg.

    Depends on the car. If the car is using a CC distrbuter (common on late mid 80's chevy that used CC Q-Jet's) Then the timing is computer controlled and pretty much hard programmed into the chip. The only "setting" that is done is simply unplugging the data cable on the distrbuter it setting it to true TDC at idle and plugging it back in. There is no real adjustment to them. Short of reprogramming the chip (its written in stright assmbley so good luck with that)

    Do you set the cam physically to 12° BTC or do you leave the engine at 0° and rotate the distributor until the light reads 12°?

  • @blubu68

    For a big cam BBC or SBC you need min 18 or higher initial timing with a MSD that would be the black bushing, use the one light (silver) and one medium (blue) spring.

    Hey i kno the steering column your talking about, on those column even ones that go into the 90s have rod that goes from the center of the column under the steering wheel and down to the just above the brake pedal there is a little switch , if the bolts in the switch get loose which they always do it will kill the ignition power just the way the key would if you turn it, sometimes they are adjustable and need to be set with some trial and error to adjust when turning the key activates the switch

I set it to 17btdc with vacuum unplugged then plugged it in for a 2btdc at idle. It runs good like this so.......what is going on? I know a 383 usually has a total timming of 30-34btdc, so what do you think is going on here?

    This is interesting. My ready to run MSD came with he heavy spring and green stop bushing installed. Being a ready to run you qould think guys would mainly use it for mild engines. The way it comes it only allows about 16/17 degrees of advance at 3200 rpm. the car likes around 10 degrees at idle so i was only getting about 26 degrees total advance.
    The SBC ready to run should come out of the box with blue springs and the silver stop bushing installed and I feel it would be way more "ready to run"

    Good information! However, this only applies to distributors without vacuum advance. For you guys with standard engines and distributors this is not the correct procedure. You have to get specs for your particular engine and check it to them. Note: Timing with vacuum advance connected could very well be about 30-45 crankshaft degrees advanced at about 2000 rpm.

  • @mikebrooka9395
    @mikebrooka9395 6 лет назад

    Y'all forgot about vacuum advance. SBC's love direct vacuum advance. BBC's will miss fire at idle, they like ported vacuum advance. You have to play around the more change from stock you have. Even stock, the above holds true.

    Is changing the timing belt likely to corrupt the engine timing? My car started having a lazy start as soon as I had the timing belt changed. should the mechanic have checked the timing as part of the belt replacement job?

    • @SirSlaughter357
      @SirSlaughter357 9 лет назад +1

      It'd probably be a good idea to check the timing anytime you mess with the timing chain or distributor, I've learned that lesson the hard way lol. If either of the gears were moved out of sync with the belt off it might have thrown the pistons and valves off which could leave your cylinders vulnerable to get fuel/air into the cylinder during the exhaust stroke or not completely empty the exhaust out during the compression stroke, this could also cause premature detonation but if the timing is jacked up at the timing chain, turning the distributor isn't going to be the fix because the cam shaft and the crankshaft are still linked together at the timing chain. You'd need to disconnect the timing chain again, set the 1st piston at TDC then take the valve cover off and turn the cam shaft until its set up like it should be (taking the valve cover off lets you see the valve train and lifters so you can see if their set where their supposed to.) Then after your comfortable with where the cam is in relation to the crankshaft, hook the chain back up to the gears in the timing box, throw your valve cover back on unless you enjoy an oily mess everywhere then fire her up and see where your at.

    • @carlh7795
      @carlh7795 9 лет назад

      What sort of "mechanic" did the timing belt job? Some engines are a breeze to do a timing belt on, like the 2.3L Ford and most other single cam engines aren't bad either. But if you've got a V6 or V8 with dual overhead cams, or even a straight 4 or 6 with two cams (not nearly as annoying as 4 cams), it's not a job for a lot of 'shadetree' mechanics. I highly suspect you have at least one cam that's a tooth off. Even a pretty good mechanic has that happen sometimes. When the timing belt tensioner is set, it will move the cams a little and if that's not compensated for when putting the belt on, it'll be a tooth off. That will surely cause sluggish power and usually not as quick to start.

  • @mr5point56

    sounds like your timing is to advanced if it does not want to start back up and also would cause your car to sputter,kick and snort when you go to shut her down. I would start by taking a hair out of your timing until it starts nice again. You might also need more octane in your fuel that could also be a problem.

    Hi sir, can you give me one example answer for my question? Example for like n14 engine/Peugeot 1.6 thp with the undersquare, compression ratio like 10.5.1, turbocharger, direct injection, 6 speed auto, no marking degree, and result for that engine like computer scaning, as result -1 ignition degree, minimum degree like 15 to 18, maximum degree like 30 to 34 degree, so if you like mathly counter in your brain what - ignition degree would like you choose for that engine performance would be better?? Hope you can response and give your answer sir. 🥲.. thank you very much sir.
