  • Brent works on a house in the caribbean for a client that wanted to infuse some history into their design. Based on classical architecture of that area, Brent fixes the typical Florida look for something with timeless values.

    I'm so appreciative of you for doing these Wednesday design videos. You're the only one I've seen carrying architectural beauty to the (RUclips) masses. Thank you so much for your labors!

    It looked like the architect was going for a modern/Caribbean home, you made it a classic/Caribbean. Much better as the classic. Cheers Kirk

    For any of these consults that follow through to completion, we would love to see updates. The final result is very satisfying to see.

    Love this series. Brent is the architecture prof we all wish we'd had. :-)
    The 'singapore' house also refers to this style of architecture, and the designs were trying to achieve flow thru ventilation.

    1000% better, love the classical approach.

      Classical works for a very simple reason. It obeys the laws of the Lord God as He established creation. Golden ratio, fibonacci, etc. Beauty is mathematical. So happy, Brent is bringing Beauty back in buildings again.

    I could share some perspective I’ve gleaned over the years from relatives in Key West, but that’s an entirely different story from Miami design, one that involves Conch Houses built and designed by ship builders more so than by architects and home builders. My first exposure to this architecture goes back to 1956 and the home my aunt lived in as the third or fourth generation in the same house. My first exposure saw the aluminum jalousie windows recently installed over what had been screened openings with functional shutters to quiet the seasonal cooler air and tropical storms. I also learned that convertible tops only came down in the evenings and that having the windows lowered and the back window open resulted in greater daytime comfort with the top up than you could hope to attain in a late model sedan. Something about a canvas top has intrigued me ever since. A/C was still fairly rare then both in cars and in homes. I have vivid memories of turtle pens, the submarine base, and Duvall Street, long before I knew much about Ernest Hemingway, feral chickens and six-toed cats. Thanks for allowing me to reflect.

    You should do a start to finish build project. I’d love to see how to actually construct these details. You can’t find it anywhere on RUclips. Everyone builds cheap.

    Great job, again. It was exciting to see you do a Caribbean style exterior from a more formal design to more casual finish.

    The broken roof pitch is a Caribbean theme itself. Coral would be a traditional rustication. Yikes! Use some stone facing to give the same feel. Can't wait to see what else you have for this house, and a follow-up on the build would be fantastic!

    The house is cool. The design learning is neat. But my favorite part is to learn that Brent also colors in the wood end of his pencils when he is working.

    Another great Wednesday design video, Brent! On your sketch for this home, you've offered keystones above 2 of the rectangular 1st floor windows. I'm surrounded by mc. mansions, and keystones are slapped onto every dang house, arched windows or not. Help me understand when to use keystones, please!!

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  23 дня назад +2

      Haha, yes, they are a sticker often used badly. Historically, they have functional needs in solid masonry walls. They actually worked to keep the stone above from falling down. They need to be properly sized and properly installed. Thx.

    WAAAAAAAY better! Good work Brent! I did like the observatory on the top of the roof, I wonder if it could have still been done, maybe in the middle instead of off to the side like in the original. I have seen it on some Cape Cod homes that look very nice and classical.

    I adore Alys and its butterys. I've not seen them elsewhere. I will say, I do miss the widow's walk. Is there any historic precedent that would allow its inclusion on an aesthetic like this?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  17 дней назад

      Yes, there is. Good precedent actually.

    The problem is there’s to many builders building and designing spec homes. We need rich people building their dream homes. Or at least the government should be giving out low to no interest loans so that people can dream up, design and build great homes. The savoy hotel in south beach has some great architectural facade details that I wish would get more incorporated into many of the new builds.

  • @jacobbwalters8133
    @jacobbwalters8133 24 дня назад +1

    It seems like these people really liked the idea of a broken pitch roof- is there a classical way to incorporate that?

    • @benjaminledford6111
      @benjaminledford6111 24 дня назад +2

      Those flared eaves are a common traditional detail with a lot of precedent. I don't see why they couldn't remain.

    • @DrMJJr
      @DrMJJr 24 дня назад

      There weren’t any flared eaves on either Brent’s or the original plans. Are you referring to the exposed rafter tails at the cornice of the original maybe?

    • @benjaminledford6111
      @benjaminledford6111 24 дня назад +2

      Perhaps I should have said kicked eave? I'm referring to the change in roof pitch to a lower pitch at the eaves. I would call that a flared eave but perhaps some would say that flare implies a radius or curved transition.

    why anyone in the world would think: "yeah, let me explicitly model my house after a slave owner's house" is beyond me. Historic precedent without historic context is far from ideal.
