    Opening Theme by Matthew McClelland
    -------------------------------
From their punk-filled debut (“Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked”) to the fine pop melodies of Melophobia (“Come A Little Closer”) and the sulkier songs of Social Cues (“Ready To Let Go”), Cage The Elephant are one of the most consistently entertaining bands of this generation.
Their five records have covered a ton of sonic ground making it difficult to corner them into just one subgenre of rock. They arrived at precisely the time when “post punk revival” began seeing a bit of a suppression -- and it’s clear the group saw this coming, as they transitioned towards a more pop-centric sound as time went on. Looking a little closer at the group’s songwriting, reveals frequent reflections on their thoughts and feelings on making music, their attempts at maintaining creative freedoms and realizing an overall musical identity.
Let’s uncage the elephant and take a look at what the former punk band had to become in order to stay relevant.

I disagree that "Tell me I'm pretty" was a redundant release. I think it is their most emotional and polished album. It's the most sonically ambitious after social cues. The narrator also states that shake me down was about not being stuck in the past while a lot of people think it's about drug addiction or being trapped by other people's expectations. I get that this video is one person's personal opinion but it seems extremely reductive for such an enigmatic band.

The fear of music? Let me tell you about Jorge Elbrecht, the Costa Rican singer head of iconic indie bands Violens and Lansing-Dreiden. Elbrecht’s disaffection with popular music and internet culture developed into a pathology by his late twenties, resulting in dangerously high levels of stress and anxiety as the thematic content of his work grew darker. His deterioration culminated in the onset of rapid aging that saw his health decline markedly. This, according to his estate, is confirmed by a test of Elbrecht’s DNA which shows his genetic age at 76.
That’s what I call the fear of music.
His music is amazing, by the way, look him up!

I love Cage the Elephant's discography. I find their discography to be really enjoyable. I rarely find anything in their discography to be not as great unlike Muse's outputs as of recent. Like my love for Arctic Monkeys and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. My favourite song of theirs are, Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, Cigarette Daydream (which I play in my guitar), Trouble, Ready to Let Go. Middle 8, I don't think Melophobia is their peak at all. It was really them exploring a new sound. Tell Me I'm Pretty is a mix of refinement of Melophobia and their earlier music. Tell Me I'm Pretty is their music refinement.
Matt Schultz is definitely writing about his divorce in Social Cues. I listen to it going through a breakup along with Igor. I'm always excited for whatever they come out with.

As a huge CTE fan, calling them a punk band is quite the overstatement. In One Ear is their only real punk song. They don't even really have any pop-punk songs. They're absolutely a rock band, though they are absolutely going to pop-rock, but they aren't punks.

    • @zackzallie8735

They have the proto-punk/garage rock sound of the 60's like The Stooges and MC5.

They have undeniable punk influence but I wouldn't call them a punk band. Sell yourself, teeth, sabertooth tiger, and in one ear are a few examples of that. I still hear light punk influences in their polished and poppy stuff, like the house of glass.

To be honest I thought they were a punk band but that was just when I met their first album, post punk/garage punk are not even my favorite genres but I loved their music back them, I still like some of their "new" music like "cold cold cold" and "mess around" but not as much as their first album, I understand why they changed now at least

Discovered them 3-4 years ago, and now they are my favorite band. Melophobia is such a good record with it's Beatles esque sound. Still their best record. There is something about their music that feels genuine, raw, real and uplifting, they have evolve but have not lost their essence.

I was pretty excited when I saw this in my subs but a bit disappointed honestly. Lots of misinterpretations with the band’s lyrics, especially with songs like Cold Cold Cold and Goodbye. Cage writes about music itself and the industry a decent amount but not as much as you’re making it out to be. Matt writes a ton about his personal life, especially his recent divorce on Social Cues. This was alright. Pumped about the Philip K. Dick movie though tbh

I love this band so much. I saw them live at the music hall on my college campus and was like 5 rows from the stage and Matt and Brad came out into the crowd, Matt was stage diving, Brad stood in the seat next to me and they played Ain't No Rest For The Wicked while they did that. Like, I was legit touching brad and turned around and saw the whole venue staring at where we were. It was an awesome experience.

Great video, but I feel like it's not complete. In all of their albums Matt was reflecting on his relationships, but the last one is heavily influenced by his divorce and all of the songs have this kind of dark falling-out-of-love undertone. I think it was worth mentioning, especially if you included "goodbye" as an example

You talk like they changed their sound to "stay relevant."
Thus is just simply not true.
People change as they grow. Taste changes, people can venture artistically. A musician isn't locked into one sound or genre. They can make whatever music they want.
