As a Brit listening in it's really interesting to see an American's point of view from the outside, since they've been a household name for anyone from Yorkshire (where I and they are from) just because of how bloody relatable they were. They've lost that relatability a bit as they move on with their music and though I prefer their first two albums, I think nearly all the music they've put out holds its own. You can't keep singing about nights out in Sheffield when you're living in LA lol... Keep up with the great vids man, really appreciate them!
Absolutely. I find that, with a lot of great music you find yourself visualising a place and usually the place where the the band are from. Their earlier stuff always makes me think of Yorkshire. The newer stuff definitely has a Californian influence. I think that's why Americans didn't get their earlier stuff. Americans are exposed to London a lot but not the North of England anywhere near as much.
They’ve definitely got more American influences since moving there obviously that’s bound to happen but I still love how Alex throws in some Yorkshire slang in all his songs that we can still relate to! More so in TBH&C than AM as well!

I’m from the UK so it’s surprising to hear they only got big during AM. Their first album was always talked about and I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor is a a classic. Love early 2000s alt rock :)
The U.S. had some serious issues in Arctic Monkeys' early years, I can attest as an American. I think that blocked our ability to appreciate great music for a time.

American here. I was first introduced to Arctic Monkeys around 2010-11 when I was in college (university). But my friend was already a big fan of theirs and she told me to start from their first album. I remember she asked me a few weeks later if I had listened to them yet and I was like oh no sorry I'm busy, haven't got around to it. So she send me "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and said really quick just listen to this. That was all it took, I was hooked. Immediately I loved their first two albums. I didn't even get to Humbug for a while after because I was still so enamored with the first two and trying to learn every word. It would have been too much at once lol. Even though I couldn't relate to them being from the US, it felt to me like I was visiting a friend in the UK and they were showing me around to the non-tourist spots and giving me a real feel of the life there. I can definitely see where they tried to be like the UK version of The Strokes at first but imo they did it better. Then I finally listened to Humbug and then Suck It and See which had just come out at the time and this time it took a few listens to each to really get into them but I always appreciate when artists try something different. And same thing they then went on repeat til I learned all the words, I went to see them live 3 times (with the aforementioned friend each time). I've loved everything they put out since. I love how they reinvent themselves, the side projects, the Submarine EP, all of it. One of the truly great bands of this generation.
I know I'm a year late but YT just recommended me this vid. Back to what you just said, it's not obsession, it's what makes fans fall in love with the band. I was arctic monkeys' fans, I used to listen to them all the time but when AM came out, I was like who the fuck is this? It's a complete turn off. And I bet arctic monkeys are gonna be mainstream band from that day.
@@funkiebutch9690 I know I’m 9 months late but I didn’t think that AM was that bad. I loved their older albums but I still thought of AM as being them. Mostly because you can’t stay the same forever and expect others to stay the same as well
can i just say tho, personally i love when bands go off track and make music that doesn't sound exactly the same as their previous stuff it shows off their range and talent better. im super late to this video lmaoo but tbhc was so much fun to listen to for the first time, i was confused as fuck but it was so good 🥺
Greasy Butthole it’s so interesting!! The music isn’t my favorite but I LOVE the artistic take on their music. The lyrics still have that classic Alex Turner sound, and it’s so fun to see them turn from deep English culture into more American. I love how random the lyrics are like “cheeseburger” in SSLF, but the whole album tells a story and it’s captivating. It’s a whole new side of them and I will stick by them regardless of what new sound they develop because I just adore them as artists
I have been a Monkeys fan for over a decade now and they have never disappointed. Each album is its own unique form of art. Tranquility Base leaves me speechless. Each song is so carefully and beautifully crafted. Favourite Worst Nightmare will always be my favorite though. True fans not just “AM” lovers will understand and appreciate that.
Am I the only one who absolutely loves TBH&C ? Sure, their other albums are phenomenal, but there's something so suave, experimental, dangerous and mysterious about their new album. Oh, and poetic
WOW! Just another huge shift from the last album, this on is very synth and soft, it's music that would best be played whilst making out and spun on vinyl. Listen to it while laying back with the lighting low, it will put you in the right mood to take it in.
it's ok, it's fun at times and some times it's backround music. Produced nicely and with intriguing sounds but it didn't really push any envelopes. I'm glad they still make music tho.
I think that they didn't get US success because it was very British back when they first started so radios didn't understand it. Then they tried psych and stoner vibes its not popie enough for America, finally moving to Am they got all that right but in the meantime meant that i can't get a ticket anywhere ffs
"We are left with Imagine Dragons and Coldplay to represent alternative rock." LMAO. Great video, Middle 8! Super hyped to see what the guys do for the next record, loved AM and their debut, Favourite Worst Nightmare was and is their opus in my opinion. Though while I've grown out of the band, I'm hoping the new release will pull me back in. (please cover bands/artists like beach house, deafheaven, fleet foxes, the strokes, and mount eerie!)
They've always been well known, at least in Europe. Their gig always sold out pretty fast (too fast for me liking), interesting to see that it happened much later in the US. Great vid mate
I heard of them around the time AM came out (2013ish) and their songs from AM are the only ones to play on the radio in the US mostly, so it's interesting to hear that they're so popular in Europe.
I’m from Sheffield, the first two albums are extremely relatable. They perfectly capture nights outs in Sheff and some of the places they sing about I live a few minuets from.
Nice video, and I agree with what you're saying. Arctic Monkeys evolved and progressed their sound. I like that. It's not that I hated their earlier stuff, and I was following them when they released AM. But after hearing the AM album I became a real fan of the band. I respect bands who are willing to try new things and change their sound. This takes guts and songwriting ability. When it's a successful endeavour, you get an awesome album like AM. I still listen to this album in my car on a regular basis.
My only problem with AM is that it came after 4 incredible and unique albums, with plenty of support from singles. If AM had been a first or second release, probably would’ve blown my mind.
I just don't get people who immediately say "they're older stuff was better." As if they're new stuff just sucks. Like Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is fucking incredible, it's just completely different than anything before. Which is insanely impressive if you ask me. I love the space age vibe and the slowness at times. But hey, that's just me. I would love more stuff like Favourite Worst Nightmare, but as an American, AM was the first album I heard by them, and it's what I fell in love with. But I've grown to completely appreciate their earlier stuff even though it's made for a British audience. I just don't understand extremist fans, for anything really besides just bands, who hate everything except for the one album they love. Like how do you live life with no changes? Change is one of my favorite things and seeing a band evolve is awesome, because I'm along for the ride to see what's next.
@@themidwife1624 but like saying its the worst is also harsh. Its diffrent but many of the songs are bops. I fell in love with knee socks and i wanna be yours. Yes, there older stuff is also good but so is AM. BTW the first time I heard of them was actually in English class at school (I'm german) in our book was a text abouz how to become a singer and Arctic Monkeys was mentioned and even a song example came with the book. It was fluorecent adolecent (I hope I spelled that right) and I fell in love with them. I'm glad that they did put out AM. It made them big internationaly. I so often hear them in german trash tv. I'm always trying to first start with the new stuff and then go to the old, did that with P!atd, TØP and The Neightbourhood. And I always prefered the newer stuff beat wise but the older lyrical wise
It’s only a matter of time before this channel explodes, and I can’t wait to see it happen. Also, you should really consider making a massive special on Radiohead. Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, The Strokes, and Wilco would also make some awesome videos.
Rastafarian Targaryen I highly recommend checking out their “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” album. Absolute masterpiece. Imagine if Radiohead made a folk album.
i remember listening them in Brazil when their firs single came out on the internet! time flies, these boys still have it, they have grown up, so their music! they have evolved so well.
I don't think it's meant to be, literally everyone I know thinks it's their worst/ one of their worst. Nothing pretentious or hipster it's just very different.
I came across them back in college with Crying Lightning. It was free on iTunes and it sounded so sick that’s all I had on repeat for long time and never looked into their other music until AM when I was told to listen to it
Keep up the good work. Love hearing the backstories to the bands I love. Plus your delivery and story telling is just as impressive as the stories you tell
Unpopular opinion: Suck It And See is prolly my fave. I love Black Treacle, Suck it and see, star spangled. I love the sound! Not too hard like FWN nor too soft like AM
Suck it and See was very tough for me to get into, but once I finally did I fell in love with it. It reminda me of winter, for some reason. Definitely not my favorite, but come to think of it, it kinda just stands totally alone for me. Kinda like how Tranquility would if I didn't totally loathe it.
All of their albums are great. I usually have certain moods to listen to any of them tho. Humbug is best when you're high or drunk, Suck It and See is best if you're alone in a car or room and just want some easy listening, AM is best in a car ride with friends or in a party, Tranquility Base is best when you REALLY want to feel some goosebumps. But the first two albums, I'll listen to it any fucking time
dude loved your video!!! bro if you can be soo kind as to read my comments and reply to them as its really hard finding an AM fan that shares the same enthusiasm as me :D
I have the same opinion but I’m thinking tranquillity might tip suck it and see for my least favorite. Not sure though because it just came out. Even on their worse albums they got song I like still at least
Ur the guy who started it all.this video came up in my recommended section a year ago and after I watched it I became addicted to arctic monkeys. Thanks bro
Saw them in Baltimore, wow, almost a decade ago. After they absolutely crushed it on "Brianstorm" for the fifth, or so, song of the night, I told my wife, "I'm ready to leave when you are. It's not getting better than that." And it never did. I give them credit for a successful reinvention. Few bands ever pull that off. Just not my thing anymore.
I’m only 14 and I’ve been listening to them for like a year and I’ve got to say, with all my friends loving rap, grime, drop and those other types of music, the arctic monkeys are some of the greatest artists ever. They haven’t missed on a single album (except maybe tranquility base hotel and casino but imo that was still a good album) and are all around brilliant
I'm a huge fan of the Arctic Monkeys as I grew up listening to their music. I do prefer their old albums to the recent ones though. But I'm glad that they receive the international recognition they derserve. Whatever hits make them happy, then I feel they should definitely just go for the best =)
Woah. This was uploaded a year ago. I remember when and where I found this and watched it, and it's what drew me to this channel. I'm loving the content dude. Kepe it up. You're always going to be great.
i am so unbelievably proud of them it makes me cry the fact that they’ve gone from being a bunch of teenagers just having fun to one of the biggests bands ever is just amazing. i really love how popular they got, how they appealed to so many people and had that year and a bit where they were “””””’mainstream””””” but still made music their own way. i love how each of their albums is so different from the last and they never were never afraid to experiment and go into unknown territory. theyre all unbelievable talented at what they do and i could listen to each of them play individually for ours on end. they are truly an example of how to be a good band and they shaped my childhood in ways im beyond grateful for. i love them, so so much
Damn this is an amazing overview of the arctic monkeys career so far. Only thing i disagreed with was the FVN being faster and louder than WPSIATWIM. Their debut is freakin LOUD
everton20 FWN is more aggressive and lyrically more mature than their debut. Stuff like This House is a Circus and Balaclava are some of their fastest songs in their discography.
It's fine it just isn't my thing He can't write chip shop rock n roll anymore is what he's said in interviews And while he might be in a hotel on the moon I'm still in the chip shop
I was glued to the screen the entire time! Great video as always. My least favorite would be Humbug. But that's a first impression take. My favorite is Suck It And See. Most likely because i've listened to that one the most.
Just Kids Yupp. I think we both had the idea in mind before talking about it since Arctic Monkeys new album is a HUGE event. No one wants to miss out on that release in our niche. Volksgeist also made a video about them 😅
Because of how their latest album turned out, i believe the next album (if they make one) to be very different again and hopefully puts rock back in the pop because of the long await from fans, although I also enjoy rock being more of a subculture.
They are one of the best bands in history, they are brilliant, their music evolution is amazing and I love their transformation, Tranquility Base is simply amazing...my fav album is probably Humbug
Glad to know Favorite Worst Nightmare did chart in America and my memory didn't fail me. I remember Brianstorm getting radio play and was the first Arctic Monkeys song I heard. Second being Fluorescent Adolescent. went back to their first album and I felt a familiarity with it like I heard it before and rediscovering it. Been a fan since
Least favorite is Suck it and See. I hated AM when it first came out (kinda what you were saying about long time Arctic Monkeys fans) but now I love it. Humbug is my favorite out of them all though. Also first time seeing these guys was when they toured with The Black Keys and they were incredible!
Albums in one word, first album at the top. Adrenaline- WPSIATWIN Confidence- FWN Reflection- Humbug Hope- Suck it and See Groove- AM Vibe- TBHC Sunset- The Car
Phoenix Master415 I really hope they continue too. I feel so bad that I only discovered the band this month. Where am I all this time. Makes me want to turn back the time.
I’ve listened to every single album of AM and I literally love all of them, THBAC was rough at first but it’ll ease you in with 4 out of 5 and Star Treatment and after you listen to those the vibes are easier to enjoy
i love everything they have ever made. they have never once disappointed me and i can come back to any of their past albums and listen happily. their newest is just fucking art though. it's beautiful.
Funny enough, I live in the U.S. and discovered them in 2008. It was the summer leading up to my freshman year in high school. I remember being shocked that nobody else had heard of their music. I'd show it to my friends and they'd tell me they didn't like it. Fast forward to AM dropping and suddenly everyone was claiming they were an "OG fan" 🙄
Wow, same here. Except 2007 for me. But literally, it was towards the end of 8th grade and then going into freshman year I got into them. I was the only one into them, and whenever showed them to other people, they thought I was weird or made fun of me. But yeah, when “AM” came out, I was pretty pissed off, and had drifted away from the band at that point anyway. I feel the first 2 albums are the ones that are most structurally innovative.

Hell yea! When did you first see them live?
1) i got goosebumbs during those crossovers, and just the entrie video
2) you're not what i thought youd look like
I don’t get this obsession of some fans to control where the artist goes...
Mostly because you can’t stay the same forever and expect others to stay the same as well
@@funkiebutch9690 its good that they change their style every album and not stay the same every single year imo

That bass line behind Dr. Dre. Wow, I never realized just how much influence they took from rap beats
can i just say tho, personally i love when bands go off track and make music that doesn't sound exactly the same as their previous stuff it shows off their range and talent better. im super late to this video lmaoo but tbhc was so much fun to listen to for the first time, i was confused as fuck but it was so good 🥺
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is perfect from start to finish
Greasy Butthole it’s so interesting!! The music isn’t my favorite but I LOVE the artistic take on their music. The lyrics still have that classic Alex Turner sound, and it’s so fun to see them turn from deep English culture into more American. I love how random the lyrics are like “cheeseburger” in SSLF, but the whole album tells a story and it’s captivating. It’s a whole new side of them and I will stick by them regardless of what new sound they develop because I just adore them as artists
I know i'm answering 2 years later but, tbhc is my fav, but i don't like The World's First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip
I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but yet another great video by an underrated channel.
Thanks!
YOU INCLUDED CHOO CHOO IN THE VIDEO. YOU KNOW WHAT'S UP.
Big boy tune
Am I the only one who absolutely loves TBH&C ? Sure, their other albums are phenomenal, but there's something so suave, experimental, dangerous and mysterious about their new album. Oh, and poetic
Definitely not alone Haley. Been a fan for years. TBHC has done something to me that the other albums have never done. Masterpiece.
Tranquility Base has arrived, what are your feelings about the new album?
WOW! Just another huge shift from the last album, this on is very synth and soft, it's music that would best be played whilst making out and spun on vinyl.
Listen to it while laying back with the lighting low, it will put you in the right mood to take it in.
Middle 8 love it. for me right now, out of their six albums it's top 3
Glad I'm not the only one who had that scene in mind, heha
it's ok, it's fun at times and some times it's backround music. Produced nicely and with intriguing sounds but it didn't really push any envelopes. I'm glad they still make music tho.
Love it, a true masterpiece, the more I listen the more I love it.
I love that 'Fluorescent Adolescent' is playing in the background at the end
I think that they didn't get US success because it was very British back when they first started so radios didn't understand it. Then they tried psych and stoner vibes its not popie enough for America, finally moving to Am they got all that right but in the meantime meant that i can't get a ticket anywhere ffs
These videos are amazing! The editing, the facts, the storytelling.... I just loved all of them
"We are left with Imagine Dragons and Coldplay to represent alternative rock." LMAO.
That One Guy thanks! And I’ve held off on the new AM leak till I hear it on release. Might do one on Beach House soon, we’ll see!
I wasn't a fan of Tranquility at first, but in the years after it's release it's really grown on me and now I love it as an experimental masterpiece
As an American im shocked AM isnt more popular in the US. Theyre pretty known here but a lot of people don’t know who they are.. kinda crazy
My only problem with AM is that it came after 4 incredible and unique albums, with plenty of support from singles. If AM had been a first or second release, probably would’ve blown my mind.
i dont get ur point
I second this! All the artists you mentioned. Though I'm not supremely familiar with Wilco, but I guess that's the point.
Rastafarian Targaryen I highly recommend checking out their “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” album. Absolute masterpiece. Imagine if Radiohead made a folk album.
101gabed Holy shit. Sold. Thank you.
101gabed Sufjan please please please!!!
i remember listening them in Brazil when their firs single came out on the internet!
time flies, these boys still have it, they have grown up, so their music! they have evolved so well.
Lmao at these edgy hipster calling AM the worst album. Shit like that doesn’t make you unique or stylish at all.
I don't think it's meant to be, literally everyone I know thinks it's their worst/ one of their worst. Nothing pretentious or hipster it's just very different.
AM is a shit album and that’s the mass opinion of their British audience.
@@Garrett1240 because y'all butthurt is the one that broke them in America
@@fede018 I'm an American.
AM was boring as shit.
I honestly feel their entire body of work is a treat to listen to. They’ve been consistently amazing for over a decade.
In my opinion their older albums are a lot better
Quiet Blob agreed.
Cool but you’re not special at all
FWN
100%
Quiet Blob yeah maaaan I bet you heard them before anyone you're coolness is unmatched
I discovered the band because of AM. Which is probably why it’s my fave album by them
Perhaps a video on the strokes?
Johnny Raper defo
Or just Julian Casablancas in general
Johnny Raper I just wanted to be one of the strokes
I came across them back in college with Crying Lightning. It was free on iTunes and it sounded so sick that’s all I had on repeat for long time and never looked into their other music until AM when I was told to listen to it
Keep up the good work. Love hearing the backstories to the bands I love. Plus your delivery and story telling is just as impressive as the stories you tell
Cole Perry thanks a lot!
Unpopular opinion: Suck It And See is prolly my fave. I love Black Treacle, Suck it and see, star spangled. I love the sound! Not too hard like FWN nor too soft like AM
Funny Little Frog true, man! SIAS is my favorite album!
But the first two albums, I'll listen to it any fucking time
Thanks for watching! A lot of work went into this video so I'm very excited to share it with you all finally.
Middle 8 Well done you were spot on!
Middle 8 Now you have to do Queens and Jack White!
Didn’t even get this video in the sub box ;(
Middle 8 pointless little jab at Jack White. Boarding House Reach is great.
dude loved your video!!!
bro if you can be soo kind as to read my comments and reply to them as its really hard finding an AM fan that shares the same enthusiasm as me
:D
Coming in late but that Arctic Monkeys/Dre mashup was fire
Suck it and See my least fave, Fave Worst Nightmare my fave.
Editing on this was phenomenal, by the way! I hear you using those stems.
Game Score Fanfare FWN has to be my favourite too and thanks you know I did 👌
I have the same opinion but I’m thinking tranquillity might tip suck it and see for my least favorite. Not sure though because it just came out. Even on their worse albums they got song I like still at least
idk why so many people dont like suck it and see.
Exactly the same here! Favourite Worst Nightmare is the best album ever...! I will never get tired of this one.
Suck it and see is beautiful,so simple but its catchy 60s guitar pop at its best, the new album reminds me of a weird B side album to Suck it and see
Ur the guy who started it all.this video came up in my recommended section a year ago and after I watched it I became addicted to arctic monkeys.
I first heard them when they played Brianstorm during Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's fight back in the Writer's Strike.
Cody Hendrickson Oh shit Cody, didn’t expect you here! Love the Space Ghost vids man, keep on rockin’!
Mason Winters thanks dude!
I discovered them with “AM” then listened to their other albums. I like all of them including “tranquility and base”
Probably your best selection of background records imho. Gizz, Tame Impala, Foals... ahh all of it. Great video as usual btw!
Peter Richards haha thanks!
Holy Shit the tunes where you mixed AM with rap songs was fiyah
It's fine it just isn't my thing
He can't write chip shop rock n roll anymore is what he's said in interviews
And while he might be in a hotel on the moon
I'm still in the chip shop
Woah
omg fancy seeing u here
That's why I haven't particularly like any of their albums since Humbug: they're okay - AM, good - but they aren't ridiculously British like before
Lmaooo same
this is fair I do see this.
This channel and the content it produces is a godsend.
Volksgeist also made a video about them 😅
Lie Likes Music LOL, my case/opinion is exactly the opposite!! 😂
Lie Likes Music take notes
Really??? 😵
I think Humbug is their best, you need to listen to more of it, because you don’t think much of it at first, but then it hits you, and it’s amazing.
Because of how their latest album turned out, i believe the next album (if they make one) to be very different again and hopefully puts rock back in the pop because of the long await from fans, although I also enjoy rock being more of a subculture.
WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THATS WHAT I'M NOT HIVE STAND UP✊🏾✊🏾
They are one of the best bands in history, they are brilliant, their music evolution is amazing and I love their transformation, Tranquility Base is simply amazing...my fav album is probably Humbug
I prefer the first 2 albums over their newer stuff.
Those mashups were brilliant mate, fantastic video
Wow great video about monkeys’ journey. I hope you will continue with TBHC album review and the journey that brings them to this album, thanks!
I love the history you show in these videos
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is soo damn good!
Are you from skeleton clique?
Glad to know Favorite Worst Nightmare did chart in America and my memory didn't fail me. I remember Brianstorm getting radio play and was the first Arctic Monkeys song I heard. Second being Fluorescent Adolescent. went back to their first album and I felt a familiarity with it like I heard it before and rediscovering it. Been a fan since
They've been a staple of my music listening since the debut.
they’re just fucking phenomenal man, my favorite band forever
such a great video man! the quality is... wow! keep doing it!!
Thank you!
this gave me chills
Least favorite is Suck it and See. I hated AM when it first came out (kinda what you were saying about long time Arctic Monkeys fans) but now I love it. Humbug is my favorite out of them all though. Also first time seeing these guys was when they toured with The Black Keys and they were incredible!
Albums in one word, first album at the top.
Adrenaline- WPSIATWIN
Confidence- FWN
Reflection- Humbug
Hope- Suck it and See
Groove- AM
Vibe- TBHC
Sunset- The Car
Can ya do the 1975, I’m okay with them not the best but their lyrics are intriguing
amazing editing on this video man! you really did your research and i found out more about one my favourite bands, thanks bro
The new album leaked last night but some songs got taken down but in my opinion it was ok I just hope they still make music after 2018
Phoenix Master415 I really hope they continue too.
I absolutely love your videos ! You should make a video about the Black Keys
It’s coming
i love everything they have ever made. they have never once disappointed me and i can come back to any of their past albums and listen happily. their newest is just fucking art though. it's beautiful.
"we were left with imagine dragons and Coldplay to define alternative rock" shm
locomm19 Twenty One Pilots
My least favourite is actually AM and I still enjoy humbug the most if I'm honest
Michael Christie humbug is probably one of the greatest albums I’ve listened to from the 21st century. It’s incredible
BarnyWaterg8 Glad I'm not the only one
Not an unpopular opinion
Same!
Humbug is easily their best written album. I can't wait for the next album though
Amazing analysis, the part how their drum and bass style production perfectly melted into contemporary R&B and Rap music really blew me away :0
I would have rather had then make an AM 2.0 haha. AM was so good in it's own way. I did like the older ones but AM had such a bad ass sound.
I think eventually it will be back. We just have to go on the ride with them
