  • Brian Boru’s March is a traditional Irish tune that has long been a favourite of harp players, our tutor Lisa Canny teaches the tutorial for this tune on harp.
As you probably know, Brian Boru was High King of Ireland from 1002-1014 AD. Apparently, he united the tribes of Ireland against the invading Vikings. It is uncertain whether Brian Boru played the harp but he was a patron of harpers and poets, as was custom of leaders in the day. Today, Ireland’s national emblem is the harp and the symbol used is based on the Brian Boru harp, or Trinity harp, which is housed in the Long Room of Trinity College, Dublin. Although legend tells that this is the harp played by Brian Boru before the battle of Clontarf in 1014, the harp is supposedly dated from the 14th or 15th century. Brian Boru was killed 23rd April 1014, hence the timing for this tune on the list.
We were delighted to see a whopping 5 harpists in today's video, honouring the rich harping heritage of Ireland. The audios blended wonderfully and seamlessly (thanks Gerry!) to give a truly lovely and, in fact, very medieval feel to this particular rendition. (Maybe at some point we should have a medieval-themed video??🤔 That would be fun!)
Shout outs in particular to Dóra, Samudra, Mike and Tamara for submitting two videos apiece on two different instruments 👏 and welcome back to Jim from Zimbabwe, we don't think we've seen you for a while!
Well done one and all for a truly lovely performance, we hope to see you again in our next video for the equally lovely tune The Boys of Tandragee.

For some reason, I always look for Noriko and smile when I find her. My smile was extra big with this one, seeing her with a harp instead of her usual whistle.
