    #flash #speedlite #Yongnuo #firmware #upgrade #YN685
    How to upgrade the YN685 firmware when you cannot find the USB connection. The point in this video is how you get the upgrade software to the flash when you cannot find the physical connection - for the actual upgrade process, please refer to the yongnuo homepage:
    www.hkyongnuo.c...
    ** WARNING: Some report that their Yongnuo flash after the upgrade is completely ruined and bricked. The issue seems to relate to two issues (but there could be more): (1) the installation software does not like certain characters in the file name (and gives no warning in this regard) or (2) if the upgrade is not done from a Windows version other than Windows 7, then the result is bad. So please be very careful before performing the upgrade - it could brick your flash! The producer of this video does not know how to fix these problems, and unless you have access to a Yongnuo authorized dealer that can help if things turn out bad, it is recommended not to upgrade the software **

    I succesfully and smoothly updated my YN685 for Nikon using Windows 10 following this video but with these steps:
    - first update your trigger YN622-TX to last firmware (MODE+ POWER ON) (firmware: YN-622N-TX_FW_V1.13.dfu)
    - second update via trigger the flash unit (on trigger GROUP+POWER ON) (firmware: yn685n_offical_fm_v1.41.dfu)
    IMPORTANT TIP: trigger updater and flash updater are two different programs that you can download from Yongnuo web site.
    With the trigger updater program I also succesfully updated firmware on a pair of transceiver triggers YN622N II (CH/AF+POWER ON 622) (firmware: YN622N-TRX-II_FW_V1.03.dfu)
    Of course all batteries charged, if you break firmware update results are impredictable.

    Tip: use FULLY charged batteries. The firmware upgrade to version 1.40 bricked both of my YN685N (one at a time). After the upgrade, the first unit did not restart and the display showed three "squares" instead of the f/w version number. I tried to do it a few times, following the instructions step-by-step, with the same results. A few minutes later, I decided to put recently recharged batteries and I managed to successfully upgrade the first unit. I removed the batteries, put them at the second unit, followed the steps and got another bricked unit. It took me a while until I decided to put a different set of fully charged batteries and run the flash updater. Maybe it was a coincidence, but the "new" batteries were the only different thing I tried in both my speedlights.

      Fabricio Braga thank you for sharing Fabricio - the upgrade process is apparently very fragile and using fresh and fully charged batteries seems like a good idea. Hope others read this post and benefit from it. All the best.

    What do the updates do? Do any of them make battery life better? Can you update to the latest from the first one directly? Thank you!

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 лет назад

      Hi Sebastian, normally there are release notes, so you can see what the updates relate to, but I doubt the battery life improves. Normally it is bug fixes and maybe some improvements in the communication between the trigger and the flash. As far as I can see from the Yongnuo homepage (www.hkyongnuo.com/e-detaily.php?ID=377) there only is the latest software on the homepage, so it would be strange if you cannot update from your version to the latest, but I think the safe answer has to come from Yongnuo.

    Question: I have a 685 with a firmware of 1.2.2 and it will NOT go into Update mode. I have held down the MODE button like the others and they all went into update mode except this one. Any thoughts?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  6 лет назад

      Just so I am sure I understand: You have several 685's and and you have successfully updated them all but one, and the last one will not go into update mode?

    • @crollinsphoto
      @crollinsphoto 6 лет назад +2

      Yes, the oldest one with firmware 1.2. Got an email from Yongnuo and they said all firmware 2.0 and below can only be updated by sending the flash to their repair center in China to be updated to accept firmware updates. Forget that.

    Question: so I can only update the flashes using windows 7?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  6 лет назад

      No. I upgraded using windows 10. But for a small fraction of those that go through the update, it turns out bad. The upgrad leaves the flash bricked and useless. I have not been able to diagnose the problem (and I did not have the problem as most others), but I have read that some of those that get into trouble can fix the problem by changing the filename or do the upgrade via windows 7. So if you want to be safe and avoid bricking your flash, then don't do the update at all.

      @@frederikboving Just both two YN685N speedlights. Updating first one passed in second attempt. Updating second one took 37 tries. I almost gave up. I think being persistent paid off. • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  5 лет назад

      @@RODOMILJ Good to hear! Any idea what made the difference after 37 attempts? Or did you do exactly the same every time, and suddenly it just worked? I ask because if you have a variation or a twist that makes the difference, then I am sure we are many that would like to know / understand...

      @@frederikboving I did try anything it was suggested on the Internet RUclips included. Replacing batteries with freshly charged ones, trying to reset to factorys values (not possible), trying different files, etc. Nothing worked. After all was left to cool down (and after long coffee) I came to assumption that I have to treat the flash as in perfect state, and that all is to blame is software, or wireless transport from YN622N to the flash - so, I started repeatedly updating with the latest software 1.40.dfu using recommended procedure from Yongnuo website - attempt, after attempt...very soon I decided I have to start counting, and NEVER to stop until something different happened (desperation?). And it did after 37th try.
