    The “afterburner” function has an analogy in ICE technology, where Diesel engines sometimes have to generate more heat than the ordinary operation produces, for instance to heat up an oxidation catalyst to burn soot particles trapped in a filter. This is achieved by injecting fuel after the ignition has taken place, resulting in unburnt fuel going down the exhaust pipe to ignite in the oxidation cat.
    The effect is similar: you make the engine work less efficiently deliberately to get more heat that you use to a scope outside driving. (Of course electric is still much more efficient, but at least the heating in fossils is almost for free most of the time, because two thirds of the energy in the fuel will be transformed into heat anyway - even when you need air conditioning rather than heating.)

    • @xmtxx
      @xmtxx 2 года назад +1

      Add to that the fact that, from time to time, the catalytic reaction needs to happen in a fuel rich environment, you get even more, and constant small afterburner.
