KTCA Channel 2 PBS - Last Sign-Off of the 1980s (or the first of the 1990s)

- As somewhat of a public TV junkie in the 80s and 90s, I have lots of VHS tapes filled with programming from that era. While combing through the tapes, I found what turned out to be the last sign-off for the 1980s, aired on New Year's Eve, after a re-broadcast of 1988's Land Of Loons 2 comedy special. I suppose technically this is the first sign-off of the 1990s, since this occurred after midnight...probably around 1am, when KTCA usually signed off for the night. (Note the date at the end of the signoff.) Anyway, this is a glimpse of an era when public TV stations didn't run for 24 hours.

One of the most unique...and classiest...sign-offs.
(1:36) The perfect color bars doesn't exis-
Yeah, never thought you'd say those words, meant them, *and correct them also,* did you?
Ikr. Like legit this is the only variant of the color bars you can put on a CRT in a dark basement and put me right in front of it and I wouldn't get scared or even the chills. I'd just watch it in amazement
Why did this comment make me laugh? 🤣
You gotta hove how they transition to the color bars. Very classy
they made the colour bars the star at the end and SMPTE deserves it but come on 4 SECONDS TONE. I expected at least 2 mins of BOOOOOO
KCTS in Seattle did something similar to this in the early-mid 80's.
I like how they sealed the screen with multiple rectangles which are actually part of color bars.
Never thought anyone did that. How very unique.

This is awesome, I've never seen the test pattern formed out of animated flying blocks before! Reminds me of the old Channel 4 logo in the UK.
bwc1976 yeah channel 4 don’t do that anymore. Sad.
🎉KTCA 2 Minneapolis/St.Paul🎉
Happy New Year
From 1990!
First the KTCA TV channel credits that feel like I'm watching a mega-big TV show after a regular tv show, then the star screen that transforms into the test color bars?
Creative. Very, very creative.
Nowadays not only does the channels no longer have credits/endings, but the shows themselves don't even have credits 80% of the time
From a tilted oversized star to the usual color bars, a transition for the ages.
The transition from the 80s to the 90s awesomely explained
@@OtroCanaldeMisterios From a lot of thrill to just plain blah
@@the_expidition427 This was also used in KSPS.
Very interesting. Very rarely do you hear a voice-over on the color bars.
I like the animated transition to the bars. There was another like this, I think, and I can't find it... Thanks for posting. :D
KCTS 9 in Seattle, Washington had animation and some music- a little piano jingle-when they went off the air. There's a video from 1989 showing this, if that's what you're looking for.

Yes, that's the one! Helped me find it again. Thanks!
Very nice, thanks for the heads-up! Both are awesome, but I think the synthesized music and smoother transition to actual test pattern give KTCA a slight edge. :)
Crazy to think that this was almost 30 years ago.
I don't understand why stations feel the need to broadcast 24 hours a day when hardly anyone will be watching at 3 a.m.
Just last night I was thinking the same thing, the only thing on local affiliates is infomercials and outdated newscasts, stuff people wouldn't watch if they had more options. TV stations know that the viewer count is low overnight so they put their leftovers on the air, sell some cheap ad slots and rake in profits from infomercials. Unfortunately, today it's more cost effective to run programming that pays for itself than energy savings not transmitting for 4 hours.
Satoshi9801 There are probably more people watching television at 3am than you think. Plus, I like that stations now run 24 hours, since there are more choices for us night owls and insomniacs.
+Satoshi9801 Actually, signing on and off did some serious accumulative damage to transmitters back in the day. It might not be so bad to sign off now, but keeping the transmitter on saved more money in the long run.

Imagine if everybody was a walking TV station. School would be educational programming, work would be ad breaks, gaming would be streams, etc. etc.
Ah yes, in case there was any doubt of the randomness of RUclips's algorithm, this goes into the "Proof" folder
This sign-off is now officially 30 years old

"We now conclude our scheduled broadcasts for today. Thank you for joining us, and be sure to be with us again tomorrow. Good night!"
I remember watching this video when I was 5 at Fort Wilderness.
Thanks for posting and your descriptive comment. I love the nostalgia...thank you
Ah, The Nostalgia Of KTCA.....
"KTCA-TV ending it's broadcasting for the day join us tomorrow-morning goodnight".
Wow, the mailing address and the phone number are made up of the numbers of the Two Stations that Twin Cities Television owned (and still own) at the time, KTCA 2 and KTCI 17. Clever.
Oh man, i saw a name I recognize and it brought back bad memories. Didn't realize they worked the same job back in '90....
Yikes. I wasnt even gonna be born for another like 15 years almost so I don't know any of those people, but imagining seeing someone you knew on something uploaded online that was recorded 20 years prior must be scary, especially if they were someone you didn't like.
Cool sign-off I've ever seen
KCTS in Seattle did something similar to this when they signed off in the mid-80's.
I remember that one.
That transition to the color bars is eerily beautiful
It is so strange to see such sign-offs again; after so many, many years... 😢
This video is so surreal. A relic of a bygone era
This is my favorite sign-off.
What a beautiful transition to the color bars

At least it gets to live for another day as Twin Cities Public Television.
1:37 this part is really scary to me for some reason when I’m alone
It scares the shit outa me at 2:00AM lol
Do you have any Mumfie things from PBS?
"Seventeen-two" East Fourth Street? Is that a Minnesota thing?
Twin Cities Public Television ran two TV stations on channels 17 and 2 on the dial. So saying "seventeen-two" is a reflection of that.
2:06-2:10 "Ok that was easy money. I toned for 4 seconds "WHOOPIE" or is it "BOOOOIE in my case? Later TV People and for the record" (flips bird) "BOOOOOOOO"
KTCA Channel 2 Sign Off for Saturday 31th December 1989 en Happy New Year
This is real guys!
i watch [adult swim] from 8p to 6a
who's watching in new year 2020?
I wonder why they shut down for New Year's Day?
MightyJKF At that time they shut down every night between 1am and 6am. A lot of stations would shut down overnight, in the belief there wasn’t enough of an audience to broadcast all night long.
@@mjanovec oh ok
KTCA-TV CHANNEL-2 PBS ST.PAUL MINNESOTA GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY.
WHUT Channel 32 in Washington, DC signed off until the late 90s, it's Howard University's Public TV Station.

Oh
0:52 Carl Jacobs
this isnt the final one, its just a sign off for the night. -_-
Read the video title again... It was the last sign-off for the 1980s.
Yay he's right
So, the KTCA "water graphics" logo debuted in 1990, aren't you sure?
They had a number of water graphics over the years that either had waves behind the logo or a ripple effect (as seen here). A new version with blue ripples was started in 1990, which they used as the background for the credit roll.
What month in 1990 did KTCA start using the water graphics (in which was used for the logo)?
Not sure of the exact month. Sometime between January and June.
i like the music
December 31 1989
