2012 Mini Cooper S R56 Rear Tail Light Fix - Bulbs Not Working

  • This is how I fixed the rear tail lights on my 2012 Mini Cooper S R56. I was getting an error indication light and chime in the car notifying me of the problem. The brake lights were not working and the bulb housing was difficult to remove. The Mini dealer told me the inside of the light had melted and needed to be replaced at $200 per tail light ($400 total).
    You can do it yourself with a screwdriver, TORX T20 bit, some pliers, sandpaper, razor blade, and a little patience. All done, taking my time, in under an hour.
    NOTE: There are some plastic tabs on the top and bottom of the taillight housing that make it difficult to remove the light from the car. Open the trunk, reach inside the side access panels and you can move the tabs to let the light out.

    Brilliant, I had recently lost all nearside rear lights. Through your video, found I had three melted bulb holders and all four brake/rears had corroded. This is a 2007 R56/57 cluster, which looks slightly different to yours but as susceptible to this issue. Prised out bulb holders, cleaned up elements and cut away melted plastic, rehoused and it was a complete success, that includes long term weak lights revived, because of the improved connections. Also lost the rear light error code I have had for 3/4 years.
    Corrosion = Resistance = Heat so there is another video about too with a suggestion of how to avoid a reoccurrence of corrosion, using dielectric grease. Massive thanks again

    Thanks so much for this video, I have been so frustrated trying to figure out why my lights were not working properly on my 2010 Mini Cooper S R57, I had felt the connectors were getting hot, but I hadn't taken the light housing off. You saved me a few hundred bucks because I had given up hope and was going to take it to a shop.

    Thanks for this. I had exactly the same problem with the upper brake light on my mini. You have saved me a small fortune, as the alternative would have been a replacement back- plate from a main dealer.

    My R56 has just melted off the bulb holder tabs for the second time in about a year on the same brake light. Thanks for your video which got me thinking the problem is further inside the light unit and needs addressing as well as replacing the burnt out holder.

      🤔 Think Mini should make a little improvement here eh? Great fix though. Exactly what I was looking for. (After striking out at two junkyards today) Got a fun project for tomorrow.

    Nice video, but my question is, why does it get so hot to the point of melting the plastic. What's causing the heat biuld up.

    • @jymnedwards

      @@Isaac-iv3sj Good question. I’d like to know that myself.

    • @justblairthompson
      @justblairthompson 18 дней назад +1

      It's going to be the corrosion and or dirty contacts. The point of contact should pass the electricity with no resistance, and therefore no heat. But as either dirt or corrosion builds up at the contact point, the resistance grows and more heat is created.

    You can remove the panel that the lights mount on (the one you are working on) simply by reaching inside the little storage area behind the taillights inside the car, and pushing down on the tab that you can see on the top of that panel. No need to remove the taillight lenses, etc....

    • @johnmc7596
      @johnmc7596 4 месяца назад

      No, you can't. Those clips help hold the whole unit in the body of the car. The bulb assembly is held in place by a series of little clips around the shell of the unit ( as he shows in the video).

    Jymn, thanks it worked. It was kind of a mess on mine too. The board must have warped a bit from the heat. That made it really hard to guide the socket back in. Did your cleanup routine, the light works and no more bloody ⚠️ on the dash! Thanks again.

    I have a left turn signal + brake light + reverse light 💡 malfunction on my 2015 F56 mini hardtop. The mechanic told me that the pin was burnt out and it cost $259 to replace. Is that a fair price?
