It refers to how the instruments are spread out over a stereo "landscape". If you listen to a recording in mono, everything is coming out of one speaker, which means that all the instruments and vocals are mixed together in one big heap, But when you mix in stereo, you separate all the individual tracks to get a clearer sound-scape. Hence the guitar is on one side and the drums on the other, while the vocals are usually in the middle Unfortunately, there's very little in the center of this mix

Yes. And it seems to be a trend these days with the majority of remastered editions. It doesn't matter if it's the Beatles albums of the Pink Floyd ones, or whatever. What they all have in common, is WAY too much separation. It just messes with your ears when using headphones. And also, while I like the warm sound of a lot of these remasters, the rich bass sound tends to overpower such "unimportant" things as guitars and keyboards. It's just bass and vocals now. And loud volume!
Well, I haven't listened to the new Aladdin Sane yet, but it gets much better reviews than the 40th anniversary edition of Ziggy Stardust. And no, compression is not the same thing. That's when you amplify low sounds and reduce loud sounds to achieve an overall even sound balance.

No, you're not stupid. It's quite easy to get all the terminology "mixed" up! Actually, I've just listened to the new Aladdin Sane, and my verdict is...well, it's not bad. It's in every way an improvement over the Ziggy disc, but I still prefer the 1999 remasters. I'm not sure why that is, since the new versions are supposed to sound more like the original vinyl records. But the 1999 ones just seem to have more power.

I was complaining that I don't like the remastered stereo versions of The Beatles' albums, and you asked me if that included Abbey Road as well. At least that's what I think you were asking. And Abbey Road DOES sound good, but it's only one out of 15 albums in the box set...

..Yes, I wasn't that impressed with Ziggy40 either....Especially what they did to the sax solo on Soul Love and Ronno's solo on Daydream...They appear to have divided the sax so a little is on either speaker -- it's just tinkering....Ronno's solo has been well cleaned up....Ya, Aladdin Sane is triff alright, but I confess that I only recognize a difference here and there....Where will all this remastering end?.....
