    I'm thinking it may be easier to take the first cut to 2 inches above dead center and remove that half, then do another cut that is two inches thick, and then another one that is 2 inches thick. Those two boards should be almost completely quartersawn wood with some pith in in the center that could be removed. Then when you could quarter the bottom piece and finish the bottom half. I think that it would be less moving of the wood. I haven't done this, but I think that it makes sense.

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  6 лет назад

      The one thing to remember is the further you are from the pith the further you are from 1/4 sawn. Thanks for the comment.

    • @shannonswyatt
      @shannonswyatt 6 лет назад +1

      True dat. You could just go 1 inch above the center and one below, that would be dead center and perfect quarter sawn with the pith in the middle . By cutting two inches above you end up with the same results that you had by quartered the log first, but you get the first four cuts before you quarter, which should be less moving of the logs. Thanks for the quick reply! :-)

    Lots of big knots, hopefully you can get enough length between them? I cut white pine on a belsaw in the Adirondacks many decades ago, don’t miss that pitch! Had to wash everything with lestoil, or just not wash them at all.

  • @lakebum6211
    @lakebum6211 6 лет назад +1

    Joe, You need a log deck. I was afraid that first off cut was going to get you. I know you're constrained for space but a log deck lets you load the deck so they roll right off onto the mill and you could roll logs off of the saw onto the deck without the deck getting away from you.

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  6 лет назад +1

      You are right about what you are saying here. But I like the ability to roll away the flitches from the bunk so I can load another log. Having the backhoe makes loading easy and offing the flitches harder. This was my best compromise for now. But when it comes to quarter sawing, my system needs improvement that I noticed as well. Because I have to move half of the log and then bring it back. This is also why quartersawn boards command a higher price, more work. Thanks for the comment.

  • @roysandberg

    I was a little hard on you for the saw work. When sharpening a power saw chain by hand make SURE that both sides are at the same angle. If one side is more than the other you will saw in circles, the chain pulls to one side more than the other, think of you bandsaw.

  • @barryirby8609

    I appreciate quarter sawn wood, but on a 2 x2 wouldn't all fo them be quarter sawn if you just rotate them 90 degrees. top and bottom faces flat sawn but left and right faces quarter sawn? Or vice versa? Rift sawn appear quarter sawn all the way around.

    I'm sitting here wondering why you don't take your first cut 1" up from center, and the second 1" down from center since that 2" slab will have totally vertical grain. You can often get 3x 2" slabs that have vertical grain out of the middle of the log, and that's what you're aiming for with quarter sawing. Then you start flipping the log to continue getting near vertical grain. It'll save you a bunch of work.

    Amazed at your work ethics at your age Joe! I have just one thought...if you are resawing to 2x2's later, why go to this much trouble when a flat sawed plank will yield quarter sawed when it is re-sawed into 2x2's?

    • @josaljo1

    This is the technique I'd use if I were trying to quarter saw logs into boards. No special jigs or fixtures needed.
    But this is an effort in futility if you are cutting all 2x2s. Why waste all the time to reposition the log at all? Just start cutting 2" slabs from the top down through the log. Then stand them up against the log stops and edge them to get a square edge on each slab. After the slabs are dried, you can stand them up, ganged together, on the squared edges and cut your 2x2s.
    By the way you do a lot of bull-work for a guy that says he doesn't like to do heavy lifting!

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  5 лет назад

      You will have to have pretty big logs to quarter saw that size. I think wuarter sawn would be strongest if the logs are good.

  • @m8s4lif
    @m8s4lif 4 года назад

    If I was wanting to make spindles I would want to use rift cut 2x2s instead of quarter sawed. 45 deg. tends to be best for turning. Look at all 4 sides of of a quarter sawed 2x2 and 2 sides will look like quarter sawed,and 2 sides will look flat sawed. Look at all 4 sides of a 2x2 that was rift sawed at about 45 deg. and all 4 sides will appear quarter sawed. The strange things a person learns in life. Then again I guess that I'm kind of a strange guy. LOL. Have a good one.

    OK, can't stand it any more so I gotta ask. When you got the chain saw and held it sideways all that time to cut a little off the top of the log so the woodmizer would clear it. Why didn't you just raise the woodmizer blade to cut the top of the log off and then go back and make your quartersaw cut down the middle of the log? It that beyond the woodmizers capability to cut that high above the bed?

    @ImnotChuck. 6 лет назад

    That isn't quarter sawing; it's just plain sawing a log that was cut into quarters. The boards cut from the middle of each quarter of the log will be pretty much quarter sawn, but the angle of additional cuts will decrease very rapidly and will soon be less than the minimum that normally qualifies as quarter sawn. Rift sawing is even more difficult than quarter sawing because so few of the saw cuts are parallel.

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  6 лет назад +2

    I just want to say YES YOU QUARTERED THE LOG---- Then you quit quarter sawing-- you were just plain ole planking--- If you had placed your quarter POINT out toward the dogs-- you would then have been cutting correctly and making a determination exactly where the 2 " board center was and measuring up to see how many sections it would yield maybe 2-3. Anyhow the first cut from center has to be made either 2" or 4" above the center to yield 2 or four sticks. You really had me believing in your experience till you cut this wood to xxxx -- This is not quarter sawing watch a video or two. I am older than you so I am not speaking from the bleachers.
