    It’s difficult to understand Zappa with one listen. It’s like drinking scotch for the first time. You don’t really like it. But every taste/listen makes it tastier.

    Please consider doing reactions on "Advance Romance" or "Carolina Hardcore Ecstacy" from Zappa's "Bongo Fury" album. which was a collaboration with his childhood friend, Captain Beefheart, AKA Don Van Vliet. Trust me on this one. I think you will find either one highly entertaining.

    Yes....Zappa grows each time you listen to him.......he still does after 50 years.
    A recommendation from me is side two of the double live record Roxy and Elsewhere from 1974. Starts with "Village of the Sun" and then "Echidna's Art of You" and ends with "Do You Ever Wash That Thing"........here is the two first songs played by his son Dweezil with Zappa Plays Zappa and it is incredible close to the original. Of course I have the DVD of this concert.
    And you can't go thru life without seen this........"Echidna's Art of You" is one of my favorite Zappa songs.

    Ya gotta say one thing for Frank, he dared to be different, and so he was free to produce truly original music like this, derivative of no other music you've heard before. Yes it has its influences from other music, but it follows no prescribed patterns or expectations and thus is a treasure trove of creative originality, a rare thing to find and a wonderment to behold.

    Zappa wasn't much of a fan of lyrics, so he often played with them, oftentimes just throwing in disjointed words and statements, kind or surreal and dadaesque. As a matter of fact, he began writing orchestrated music at fourteen and didn't get into rock music and all that lyrical stuff for seven years or so. He just loved composing with sound, any kind of sound, human, instrumental, found objects, etc. He was one of a kind, and the world misses him dearly.

    • @hansvandermeulen5515
      @hansvandermeulen5515 3 года назад +1

      He did pay attention to his lyrics.
      He did write 'em because he thought instrumental music was irrelevant for rock audiences of the 60s, 70s etc so he wrote songs with lyrics.
      A lot of his lyrics were about something, a lot of social commentary, new articles he'd read like the Illinois Enema Bandit.
      His lyrics should always be entertaining, first and foremost to himself.
      Often with obscure references, inside jokes like the stuff about Chester's gorilla, that's his drummer Chester Thompson.

    A little trivia: Apparently a "Florentine Pogen" is a type of cookie, The brand being Pogens, the type of cookie being Florentine. I have no idea what it would taste like. They made a lot of other types, like chocolate, ginger snaps, etc. Anyway, I just find it neat that it sounds so legit in that lyric!

    Some useless info - behind the seemingly random references to cookies and electric organs, is a song about "married musicians' mistresses". We'll probably never know who was the real "Chester's Gorilla" (though Frank once tried to pin that label on Ruth, at the Edinburgh '77 gig), and the references to liaisons with Marty Perellis (or, in the first few performances, "the porter") seem out-of-place, but most of the song is caricaturing Frank's Australian-born on-off partner Jennifer Brown. (That's all-but officially confirmed by a couple of comments in the sleevenotes of FZ:OZ - see also the mentions of her in the Butcher/Lennon books). Draw your own conclusions, then, about all those body-parts metaphors as the song progresses.

    FZ never considered himself to be a good singer. He always hired the best singers to sing what he could not. Coincidentally, I just checked out your George Duke reaction. You’ve actually heard him many times in several of the FZ songs you’ve listened to. Inca Roads being your first.
