What exactly is quilt? Quilting means that you have two layers of fabric that are held together by rows of stitches. Sometimes you have a third material between the layers which is called the padding material.
Quilting became really popular in the 17th century but basically, it has been around since the middle ages. Oftentimes, it was used as an under armor to make it more comfortable for knights to wear.
A quilted jacket today has the same characteristics; it is lightweight, it is really insulating, and it is waterproof when it's rained on. Technically, the advantage and insulating properties of quilted jackets come from the trapped air chambers in between the quilting and that really helps to make you feel warmer and insulate you better while you don't add any weight.
An American by the name of Steve Guylas invented quilted jackets. He was in the military, he moved to UK and he was inspired by horse blankets to keep horses warm and so he created a jacket. First, it was actually a shooting jacket, it was rather simple, was all made of polyester and polyamide and was cut very boxy.
Initially, it came in only two colors, in pale olive green and navy. So, if you want a very classic quilted jacket, these are the first colors you should look at. Steve started his company and named the company Husky.
Over time, he added more colors, he added the corduroy collar, It has two angled patch pockets. This feature has remained until today and it's oftentimes very practical to have big pockets when you're hunting, fishing or when you do any other outdoor activity.
The original husky jacket was made of nylon with a hundred percent polyester so don't shy away because of the material composition.
Basically, it is a single breasted jacket with five snap buttons which are very sturdy, you can open them, close them and you also have the same snap buttons on the back where we have two at the vent. It just helps to keep the sleeve very narrow to prevent any wind from coming in. Basically, these are all the hallmarks of the original jacket.
Now, when it comes to sizing, usually, they're cut a little roomier, a little boxier and Italian made jackets tend to be a little slimmer than English made jackets so always keep that in mind and try to figure out the measurements of your jacket rather than the standard sizing, otherwise, you may get a cut that's a little less flattering or less roomy, depending on what your preference is.
The goal is to have a decently fitting jacket that is slightly shorter than the peacoat but longer than a jacket so you can wear it over your tweed sportcoat or even a suit coat if you have to but generally, it's more of a country garment and therefore, it's great for everything casual, tweedy and rough wools.
You may wonder, what kind of quilted jacket you should buy and you would want to go with the original jacket but unfortunately, the Husky company was sold to an Italian company so it's no longer the original thing.
Traditional ones are oftentimes the ones you find in England and there are several brands, there are some from Italy, which have a more modern fit. You'll also find them in the US. Price wise, you can actually find them new starting at a hundred dollars.
For more features, better materials, you spend about 250 - 300 of course, that also depends on the brand you have but if you're on a budget, you can try to find them on eBay or second hand starting at maybe 20, 25 -30 dollars. Overall, great value for what you get.
Over time, sometimes the quilting may come off but frankly, that does not really matter, it just gives your garment character and if it looks frumpy or anything, you'll just get a new one.

I just moved from the City to the Country, and decided to dress the part. This clip helped make my up mind on what to get.
I highly prefer Barbour coats. They’re an excellent choice for quilted or waxed cotton coats. Best to go for the timeless classics in my opinion.
Wonderful video! I'm also a big fan of quilted vests, I picked up one at Brooks Brothers which gets a lot of use in layering and by itself. I love that tweed version you have!
Seeing your old comments is like rewatching marvel movies where they mention Thanos. Love your channel and what you've become Carl!
we need a Sven Raphael Schneider video everyday, i love these
+Kevin Newbury haha, thanks. We are working on getting more videos to you but one a day will be tough,
+Gentleman's Gazette i think 2 in a week is enough :)
Thanks for the GG article and video - decided on a Lavenham jacket...I’ve got enough Barbour jackets to last a lifetime ;-). Love your town and country gentleman’s gazette
The Husky Jacket was not the first quilted jacket in America. The 1934 Eddie Bauer Skyliner was 30 years earlier. It was the first patented down jacket in America and also the first quilted pattern jacket to be mass produced.
Yay, quilted gambesons! I like medieval history and armor.
I got mine on ebay really nice for fall. I went for a roomier one for layering and so a sportcoat will fit underneath
Could you make a video on vintage outdoors wear?
New here, i like your subjects and the real enthousiame you share.
+napoleonalex1 Thank you, make sure to check out our older videos as well.
did you learn to spell enthusiasm yet lol
I got a quilted bomber jacket as a liner in my Nike Military M64 Field Jacket. Which I take with me everywhere I can. So I got two jackets in one. The liner is for light weight weather, and the outer for heavy rain and snow. I've worn both when I was in really cold days like 15 to -30. With proper under laying, but I love the quilted jacket. It's lined with goose feathers but not bulky, so in windy times when I'm wearing it. I'm nice and warm, shielded from the wind. But cool on warm days of spring too, because of the light weight. Has the same cross pattern sewn on it and I got the best of both worlds with these layers.
I think this trend may be over now, but I used to enjoy spotting the quilted jacket sheep on the High Street or Main Street in autumn and winter. When it got to people in their 70s wearing these things, I knew it was all over.
Those people were the originals that sported those things when the style first came out.... wth are you talking about? lol
Quilted padded armour was made by sewing together layers of heavy linen and wool fiber. It was very heavy. Earlier on, they were the secondary barrier and the principal slash barrier. Swords don't cut through gambeson easily.
quilted armor aka gampeson or Akaton was very effective and was quite popular
Shadiversity had entered the chat.

I'm getting a quilted jacket from Barbour for my birthday!

Yeah, which one?
@@jeanferret9497 I also refer the Waxed, but who sees them as "naff"?
What is your opinion of Barbour jackets, quilted or wax? They have really revolutionized and popularized the style.
Can't say I've noticed the quilted / criminal connection. Thought it was Burberry that the chavs preferred.
@@TheDavecroft they can't afford real burberry
MatthewJBD But what about second hand?..
@@TheDavecroft chavs wear adidas and nike mate this isn't the 1970s
What is the jacket brand/name that appears behind the "quilted jacket guide" intro title? Thanks
I would be Interested to know that also.
Can you please tell me what jacket that is in the begging of the video? Thanks
Oustanding video. Keep up the good work!!
+Graciela Mezquida Peralta Thank you!
Thanks for these... only feedback is to make them shorter and more concise. I found myself skipping around after 5 mins. Great work and I'm looking forward to more videos.
+Chris Hill The ever decreasing attention span. We try to keep it snappy but sometimes 5 mins is not enough...
Sven what is your opinion on the brand Lexington? The reason why I'm asking is because I have found a quilted jacket made by Lexington and the original price was more or less 350 $ and it's on sale for about 150 $. The quality seems to be quite nice and it's a Classic designe in olivegreen.
Thank you in advance and greetings from Sweden!
Good and informative video for who loves the wearing thnak you so much. Video volume very love by the vay.
The amount of Irish farmers you see wearing these, they look very snazzy
Can you please help me out with the "fit"? Today I bought a brand new, really nice classy jacket... However the fit isn't perfect, I mean( It looks good, it feels good and comfortable but when I stretch my arms forward it get's quite tight on the back... Please give me tips, because I'm worried and don't know if I should return it back.
Thats how ITS supposed to be
The illustration of the historic quilted fabric was not a piece used under a knight's armor, but it was actually Chinese brigandine armor (a set of small plates riveted under a coat of fabric, in this case, silk) used during Qing Dynasty (the last dynasty of China).
You are right it is chinese, actually it is not a real armor , as it was wore to look more impressive and not really to protect the body
Hey,where can I get the sweater, that you styled with the pink shirt?
Maybe I'm missing it somewhere. Is there a link to purchase the plad jacket?
+otto man You have to checkout our guide for links to specific jackets: www.gentlemansgazette.com/quilted-jackets-guide-buy-history/?RUclips&
Have you done a review on wearing a Waxed Jacket?
I salute you for your gorgeous videos !
Wouldn't it be a good idea to shoot a video about wax jackets ? As I see it, that topic would fit nicely with the quilted jackets :)
+PictureArtByAE1 I will put it on the list. Thanks for the suggestion
Great video as always! I had no luck finding the husky store in milan :(. Google maps led me to a building with no shops in it right outside of the Quadrilatero della moda. And Boggi only had one type of diamond pattern jacket that was rather thin. Any recommendations on which other store to shop for a quilted jacket?
Does anyone know of any brands that produce quilted jackets in size long?
Lavenham was pretty long
where can i buy the jacket on the mannequin on your right
Raphael, you should have focused more on Barbour as they are the ones to make this jacket popular!
Another thing is that my father has one just like you are wearing and it has been in crisp condition since last 7 years! He bought it brand new. Another piece I saw was a 30 year old piece used in hunting and even the stitching was perfect!
As you exaggerate that quilting comes apart, these jackets, the Barbour ones, are work horses and stand the test of time!!
And above all I am sure you haven’t seen any British garment of cheap or low quality! Their history is in more than half of your videos!! So, Please give credit to what is best out there and I am sure you know more about them than your subscribers!
what is the one in the thumbnail?
I want to get one again this year. I bought one a year ago but now I realize it's too big
+Malaquias Alfaro Yep, fit is important
Gentleman's Gazette are these appropriate for casual and business casual conditions?
I'm making quilting on a crewneck while watching this...
The armor that is shown in 1:06 is a Qing China military outfit. Interesting!
The quilted jacket, modern descendant of the gambeson
Where do I️ find music like this?
good
Big pockets for a tablet...that was funny!
so thats what its called
+LiqCharles I do not understand your question.
Gentleman's Gazette
I think he didn't knew that this kind of jacket was called "quilted jacket" until watching this video. ;-)
Sad how almost none of the comment relates to the videos topic
Some of them relate.
There aren't many opportunities to wear jackets of any kind in Florida. I'm starting to dislike living here.
+JLConawayII I can see your point.
+JLConawayII 30 degree celcius Christmas breaks though, seems pretty nice to me. I live in the Netherlands, so it's raining most of the time. We can trade for a week or so though, if you would want to. :P

I'll swap you for England anytime. Damp grey and warm in summer, damp grey and cold in winter.
Please talk to hear you. Don't whisper
Steve Guylas DID NOT invent quilted jackets. He could be credited with modernizing and popularizing them, but he most certainly didn't invent them.
An American invented the quilted jacket? Please!
+Grumpy Mr M The quilted jacket as we know it, yes.
Interesting? I'm sure I've seen images of chaps using them, when shooting, from or before the 40's. Since you must have researched it extensively I assume you're right. However it is such a quintessentially British/European item, I must say I'm surprised!
+Grumpy Mr M as I point out in the article, quilting, also in garments is very old. I suggest you read the guide and then you will understand what I mean by Guylas invented the jacket. He was American but it was invented in England, as we know it today.
I refuse to wear such pieces as stand alone jackets. They are too feminine and should be reserved to the role of a liner, under a waxed jacket or other shell.
I'd like to see less of your face and more of the clothes
I thought this came from the u.s. army 🤔
