    for the analysis of 2D lubrication domain we use 4 node quadrilateral element.what is the nodal degree of freedom?

      4 node quadrilateral element has 2 degree of freedom on each node.

    May I know how to write the shape functions in terms of x and y?

      In order to write shape functions in x and y then element should be either rectangular element or square element. But for quadrilateral element we always write shape functions using natural coordinate system i.e. zeta and eta
