Before making my bed I open the window for about 5 minutes in winter time, more time when not so cold.
Never ever left clothes on the floor, not a thing in our culture.
Always clean as I go at the kitchen, can't stand messy countertops or sink.
I also have time every morning before leaving the house to clean the cats litter trays.
Once you get the habit, it won't take long to do those chores and you won't even be conscious that you are doing them. Nice reminder to those who still hesitate thinking there's no time for little tasks in the morning.

Happy New Year to the CMS family! Thanks for your tips, as always! I make my bed 95% of the time in the morning, but not right away. Before I go to have a shower, I pull down the covers to let the mattress air out. When I am done getting myself ready, I make the bed. Another morning habit is that as I wait for the kettle to boil, I empty the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is ready for dirty dishes, it makes a HUGE difference in the kitchen for the morning as well the rest of the day.

I have to say, the idea of making your bed immediately sounds so GREAT. However, our allergiest warned us that by doing so and not letting your bedsheets and blankets "air out/dryout" from heat and moisture created by normal night-time sweating (in everyone) you will create the perfect environment for mold and mites to grow and multiply. By stopping this practice, my son's chronic runny nose disappeared! She said to peel back the covers and give yourself an hour for everything to dry out and cool down before making the bed. Just a suggestion :)

I was taught as a kid to make my bed and clean up anything like you said that doesn’t live there to be taken out and put in the kitchen or there respectful places. So I’m glad that those habits stayed with me and I also take my clothes hamper to the kitchen to make it easier to get everything done all at once. I also run my dishwasher at night I hate to have dishes in the sink it bothers me. But I don’t have time to look at my phone in the morning I have 3 dogs and a husband so mornings are chaotic, my husband always tells me sit and eat but my answer is always the same I will when I’m done getting a load of laundry in or cleaning the dishes from breakfast I have to have something else started before I sit. My mind is wired differently.

I start the day by turning on the tea kettle then to the bathroom. This gives my bed time to air out. Then I make the bed and put away the dishes in the drain board (I am the dishwasher lol). By then my water is heated and I’m ready for coffee or tea. Now I check my phone and do my devotional. Great way to start the day!

I loved Riley’s welcome message & input. She made my day. x
I never go to bed with the dishwasher, washing machine & tumble dryer on or when I leave the house. My house is really precious to me & I wouldn’t want to risk a fire.
The noise at night of the tumble dryer etc would probably disturb my neighbour & I wouldn’t want that.
I don’t keep my phone in my bedroom, so check it as soon as I go downstairs in the morning.

I love these tips apart from making your bed immediately after waking up. Even if you're not particularly sensitive to dust mites, it might still be worth letting sheets breathe a while after you wake up. In general, it's not a wise idea to trap moisture in textiles (or most environments, frankly) because it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, mildew, and odours.

    • @HeatherJRedhead

With clothes on the floor I always found that a hamper with a lid put a barrier in the way, (possible undiagnosed adhd etc) so what I did was get a tub or hamper with handles and an open top. I can throw my clothes in there just as easy as dropping them on the floor. Plus the handles make it super easy to take to the washer. I always felt like I failed before I decided to do this. Now my clothes always make it to the hamper

Things that changed my life for the better was doing laundry in the morning, it was huge! Sometimes I'll set it up at night but getting it into the dryer before I leave is huge. Putting it away is a different story but we're a family of 5 so we have plenty to wash. And yeah, sheets do not get washed more than every 2 weeks. It's like pulling teeth to get the kids to take off their sheets! They're morning chore is supposed to be to empty the dishwasher (we run it everynight) but don't always. I'd love for you to make some more on tween/teens getting more done and faster. They do like your videos you make it look simple and you're just teen friendly what can I say? That's rare! Maybe put out some teen friendly cute customizeable cleaning caddy cards?

Ok, an occasional pair of fuzzy socks might be found, but otherwise, nothing is outside the hamper. Also, my bathroom stays tidy for the most part because I keep all my products under the sink. But clean? I like your idea of doing daily glow ups, so that’s going to be my new habit. 🙂. That, and not checking my phone first thing in the morning.

I shower in the evenings. When my alarm goes off I have a pull down menu from my status bar that shows a list of messages so can give it a cursory check. Hygiene and dress while my bed airs out a bit. It takes me a minute to make it after I'm dressed.

Checking my phone is how I get up in the morning. My need-to-get-up time is 6:30am. So I set an alarm for 6:00 and 6:30. When the alarm goes off at 6am, I grab my phone and scroll for a while while I'm still in bed to fully wake up, then when the alarm goes off at 6:30 again, I get up and make my bed. I am NOT a person who can get up right away at the first alarm (unless I'm on vacation). But yeah, first thing I do after I get out of bed is to make the bed. Making the bed is non-negotiable for me, and is even higher on my prioirity list than personal hygiene. Teeth can be not brushed, but bed has to be made. 😅

I've come across the idea and various studies that waiting for about an hour before making your bed might have some benefits. A study conducted by Kingston University found that dust mites struggle to survive in the dry conditions of an unmade bed. Moreover, allowing your bed to air out during this time could be advantageous, considering that we release a significant amount of moisture and sweat while sleeping. What are your thoughts on this?

Noticed your bed is two pieces - is it two twins together to make a king? Do you find a benefit? In the market for a new king size bed. Thanks!

I get up way before my husband, so can't really make my bed first thing...but yes, it might help to get in the habit before I check social media, at least. :)

I do use my phone first thing in the morning 😢
About making my bed: I actually wake up, have my breakfast, do my skin + dental care, check my emails and to my to do list (I am one of the privileged ones who get to work from home) before making my bed. This is to let the bed air out for a few minutes before my seal up my bed.

I do make my bed every day, before going downstairs. Usually this involves getting the dog and/or cat off the bed after they’ve gravitated to the warm spot I’ve left. I do check my phone first thing in the morning, but it’s more of a cursory glance rather than reading all my messages right then.

I allow our bed to air out for a bit before i make it. The only time i check my phone first is if I've received a text or a phone call and I like to respond to those right away!

I take it you don't have a dog (or dogs, like I do) demanding to go out the INSTANT you wake up. Cause... I could make my bed, and pick up things before I leave my bedroom. If I didnt have my dogs. LOL Also, I am pretty sure I have heard 'experts' (whoever they may be) say its better to allow your bed to air out for a bit before you make it to make sure theres no dampness, or whatever. I do make my bed in the morning, but its not usually for a couple of hours after I've been up. I am usually up a half hour, hour maybe before I look at my phone. And I dont text my friends in the morning unless I actually have a question or something important to say. The only person I text 'good morning' to is my husband, who generally works out of state. And its not right when I get up (hes in an earlier time zone at the moment).

I wish I could make the bed first thing in the morning but my bf and I have very different sleep schedules so he's usually still asleep when I wake up. Our bedroom is always super messy because there is almost always someone sleeping in there with no little time left to clean the room when it's actually empty.
Any tips on how to maintain a cleaning routine for people with different work schedules?

With an amazingly clean home like yours, you can forgive yourself for checking your phone 1st😂
    However...
Pro tip to prevent it and sleep better...plug it in and leave phones outside your bedrooms.😊

I heard/read that bedding should be aired out after getting up. So I throw the covers back and make the bed a little later. I have never liked clothes on the floor. I will check the phone about right away for notifications, phone calls, weather temp and forecast.

Now I make bed in the morning not the first thing but it's a morning thing. However, there have been studies done that suggest you should let your bed “air” before making it. Let all the moisture evaporate and shake out all the loose skin cells. As for nightwear. Well, I wear mine for a week. I hang them up on a free-standing coat hanger. Again airing. One of the first things I do (after the cats) is open all windows so the house can breathe. And because the cat vacuuming occurs and does so during the day, I wonder what make of dishwasher you have presumably it is one that slightly opens the door to help avoid condensation. If not as many might not have that feature it's something to bear in mind. I don't have a dishwasher but have done heaps of research and talked to many who do.

I don't check my phone until I'm changed, ready for my day, and the bed is made. Even then, I typically meditate (using my phone) before checking anything on my phone. Doesn't occur to me to check stuff on my phone until my morning routines are done.

For anyone that has trouble with clothes on the floor, try only getting undressed next to your hamper. My hamper is next to my closet, so I can grab new clothes if needed.

Your daughter is growing up so fast. She is so sweet. Can she come to my house and teach my 11 and 15yo to pack their lunches. And my husband for that matter too. My mornings are tough. My kids and husband get themselves dressed and washed, but i make lunches and breakfast. We downsized to one vehicle because i mostly work from home. Our youngest is too close to the school to get the bus, but on cold or bad weather days, walking is not often an option that early at least. He also has ADHD, so i like to make sure he gets there on time. I leave the house with my husband between 7-7:15am to bring him to work. If i dont take my 11yo with us and give him an on the go breakfast, he will not do anything he needs to do to get ready. I have to be constantly on him. I cannot even step away to go to the bathroom or get ready myself because he will watch tv, or play with toys, etc. My 15yo will do everything for themselves, but wont get themselves breakfast most days due to not leaving enough time. When i say i get everyone breakfast, mean like cereal, or toast or waffles, nothing big, just no time. If i dont throw something in their bookbag for lunch, they wont take anything. If they have time, they will take the dog out for a bathroom break, but if not, that is up to me. They get the bus themselves. My 11yo who i have to bring to school, starts class at 820am and i need to leave the house about 8am to get in the drop off line up. I come home and feed the cat and dog, and on days i am at home, i work at 830am. Office days are 9am. Im exhausted after all of that. To make the best of it, on garbage day, i usually have to get that out as well. Im a night person with ADHD myself and struggle to get proper sleep. I would need to get up at 5-530am to squeeze even unloading the dishwasher in during the mornings, or making the bed. I wish i had time to do it though. Would make my days so much better.

Try taking your phone charger and put it in the kitchen and Not your bedroom. That's where I charge my phone. I make it a habit to not turn on my phone for one hour after I am awake. I use that time to make my morning juice in my Breville juicer and start making my breakfast. Once dishes are done then I turn my phone on and listen to a podcast whilst I wash up and get ready for the day. Try it and see if you can incorporate this new habit into your morning.
