Between 'ooo-ing' and 'ahhhhh-ing' at the lush countryside, I've determined to be a Naughton horse in my next incarnation. Thank you for an absolutely mesmerizing and cortisol-lowering Cotswold video, Dara!!
It took lots of British people telling me I needed to try it! I do enjoy it, but since Ian doesn't ... I only get to have it when we aren't sharing dessert 🤣
A lovely video, thank you. I lived in Naunton for the first 18 years of my life and my parents and grandparents are buried in Naunton Churchyard. My mother was born at the Black Horse Inn in 1916 and my grandmother was the landlady of the Black Horse Inn from 1912 to 1950, quite a long time indeed! I don't live in Naunton now but we try and visit a couple of times a year. I'm always reminded of the words of William Blake to that most English of hymns," and did those feet, in ancient time, walk upoon England's mountains green." whenever we visit.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving your lovely comment! I always love hearing when people have personal connections to the places I feature in my videos! We just went back to Naunton a couple weeks ago, and had a lovely time feeding some sheep and wandering around. 💖 it's a magical place! And the Black horse Inn is quite a fine historic pub! I also appreciate that you quoted Jerusalem. As an American who had never heard of that song until a few years ago, I have really come to understand its significance to the British people. 🇬🇧 Cheers! Dara
I just want to say the production of this video is very good. From the sweeping shot of the poppies the slow scan over and around the buildings etc, to the calming voice of the lady narrating. Almost makes one feel sleepy. I sometimes forget how beautiful my country is.
Lol, I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video! I'm going to try taking the comment about my voice as a compliment... haha 😴💤 I hope you check out some of my other Cotswolds Videos! This Friday I will be publishing a video about how to plan a trip to the Cotswolds . It's a video I've been working on for three years!

Hi Dara, the doors in the upper storey of store houses are so you can just pull a horse & cart up outside and drop whatever you're storing straight into the cart, pretty much as you surmised. Most US barns have the same thing above their main doors, AFAIK.
Ah, that makes sense! So possibly it would be wool in the case of a little Cotswold village like this. I wonder what those homes look like on the inside now... ?? Thanks for your comment! Cheers! Dara
Perfect on the river. Classic stone buildings. I love the no crowd peace too and the birds chirping. Naunton looks and sounds great. Cheers to a fantastic week
Well, to me the sundial shows 12pm (noon), so it might be correct considering that they did not have summertime (daylight saving time) back in those days.
You really do look at home in the Cotswolds! Love all the flowers and gardens in Naunton. The views of the Church from the fields look very much like a Constable painting. The perfect picture of the English countryside! The aerial shot of the poppies is award worthy! Those doors to outside from the upper floors always scare me. Surely they should have railings? New Naunton Magenta home! Gosh that is a small devils door! Lovely detail on the 15th Century pulpit! The bird song is lovely and 20mph should be for all villages! The food at the Black Horse looked wonderful! Sold on Naunton 👍
A wonderful day can be had doing a 9 mile walk from Bourton on the water, through the Slaughters (villages) to Naunton - a stop in the Black Horse - and back again in a broad loop.
That sounds AMAZING! We just yesterday drove some American visitors around Bourton, the Slaughters and Daylesford before they had to race back to the train station. Always fun to see Americans' reaction the first time they see these villages!
Yes, it was a lovely village on a perfect day! As for this summer, I am very demanding... I want lots of rain NOW so that the fields are green and the flowers are blooming in June and July! haha... I really hope we don't have another British drought. Big thunderstorms here in Dallas this morning!

Oh this is beautiful. It’s a really chocolate box type of village! I want to paddle in that river! That church is beautiful. Oo food looks good! That is a very weird bird bath!! Dove Cote??? That’s bigger than our house! Thanks for the heads up on this village. One day we’ll get to the Cotswolds!! Cheers 🍻
Let's meet up in the Cotswolds! 🙌 I want to do some otter spotting 🦦 in that river!! It certainly is a "chocolate box" village... BTW I love that term. It's one that Americans don't use. 😉 And yes that dovecote is massive!! 🕊️
Naunton is as beautiful as this video shows it to be. If you know where to go and avoid the honeypots you can find plenty of villages as quiet as this. I recommend Eastleach Dara, there are two ancient churches and the beautiful river leach runs between them. It would make a great video. Here in Gloucestershire it's been a very bleak March with hardly any sun but the sun's out today and spring is springing a bit. Roll on summer so we can get out on long Cotswolds walks again.
Amen to that... roll on summer!!! We can't wait! I have been very anxious to get to Eastleach, but we haven't made it there quite yet. We only got to Northleach, which is also lovely. And of course, I haven't published my Northleach video yet ;-) Thanks for your comment, Gary! Cheers! Dara
Superb drone shots Ian! Doesn’t matter how long it took you to get this footage out we all still love it and you have shot it all beautifully! Wow that poppy field is incredible! Such a stunning area! The different windows were interesting! Your love for 🇬🇧 really shows in your videos magenta and magenta flowers and maybe otters perfect 👍 have a great weekend guys 👍💕💕💕💕💕
That would have been a barn for sure with the doors up the top. Often, they had winches attached to lift the bags of wool, grain, and anything else they wanted to store.
Oh yes, I remember seeing one of those in Cornwall, in the village where Ian used to go each summer as a small boy. It did have a winch by the door up there! Thanks for watching and commenting! XX Dara
I've just discovered your vlog and I am enjoying visiting Cotswold villages through your videos. Thank you so much for not having intrusive music; just the rush of the creeks and rivers, birdsongs, and other nature sounds plus your narrative. Thank you!!
Thanks so much for watching! I'm delighted that you found my channel and hope you will be a long term member of the Magenta Otter Tribe. I will confess that I've switched up my editing style in different videos. If I have intrusive music in other videos, you'll have to forgive me. I'm doing a lot less music now ;-) Cheers! Dara
Yes I think haylofts are what those high level doors are for, and maybe they did store wool up there as well, they are quite common in barns or farmhouses. They are designed so that you can park your wagon underneath to load or unload. That mini door on the side of the house facing the road might just be an electricity meter box, designed to look like it has always been there.
Aaaaaah, electricity meter... that's a great idea! Cute door, that! And yes, I can just imagine the horses and carts pulling up to those doors and being filled with wool from nearby sheep ;-) Thanks for your comment, Annie! Cheers! Dara
Coming to a chocolate box near you. 😁Beautiful village. The river Windrush. I wonder if that was where the ship got its name from? The doors halfway up the house. Possible that animals were kept on the ground floor and people lived on the first floor. Could also be a hay loft. If they were near the Scottish border I would have said they were bastles. We used to have a window tax. The more windows you had, the more tax you paid. Maybe extra windows were added after the tax was abolished. (A lot of guesswork there. Hard to find out more as the search results are 99% holiday cottages named 'The Hay Loft'. 😝 Some very odd looking TV aerials too. Love the menu item that said 'with a few chips'. 😁
YES! I saw that comment on the menu about "a few chips" and it made me laugh too! I think the window tax is a fascinating piece of history... I've seen so many huge old manor homes with windows that were bricked up and closed for that reason. Looks very funny to us Americans!
@@MagentaOtterTravelsI live in the middle of Nailsworth, so I have to be loyal 🤭. I love Naunton, obviously, but the land is a bit too flat for me. Nailsworth is very closed in by steep hills and woods with a little river going through it as well, like Naunton. It has lot of nice shops, a few restaurants, cafes, and a street market every last weekend. We also have a town crier!! Nailsworth was voted 17th most beautiful place in England. I was a bit shocked when I heard that, but it is a fabulous place to be. It's 4 miles from Stroud, so you might have already been here. Thanks for the vlog, I really enjoyed it
Oh Dara and Ian, I am sure you are just gasping to be back there in that beautiful countryside. How is so enjoyed the beauty of the rolling hillside, the colorful flowerbeds and the lovely cottages. Lovely video to has shared- it is never too late Dara. You've got us hooked again on the Cotswalds. 💖🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿 👌
Haha thanks! Yes the village hasn't changed in 400 years so what's the difference if I take 2 years to edit a video? 😉. Thanks for watching, Anita.💞 Cheers! Dara
Apologies if already mentioned. Those first floor windows with four frames in one window were very likely weavers cottages. In the rooms where there were looms they needed the best light possible. Prior to the Industrial Revolution weaving was mostly carried out in the weaver’s own house.
Naunton is so idyllic. Thank you for sharing this picturesque Cotswold village with us. It looked even more fabulous with that beautiful blue sky. I loved seeing inside the cute little church and had a big smile imagining Agatha Raisin ringing the church bells. I thought you might give us your rendition, Dara?
Sorry to confess the fact that I thought about ringing the bells, but the ropes were up to high! Lol I have already documented my two bell ringing incidents here on the channel, and I'm not sure there will be any future ones! Although, I actually do have one more to share. This was not in a church, but when we visited the town of Ledbury in Herefordshire, I was able to do a bell ringing tutorial in the market hall! I'm hoping to get that video published sometime in the foreseeable future ... and not take two years this time!🙄
@@The_Brit_Girls it was actually a really fun visit! We have been going to Ledbury for 30 years, but this was Jubilee weekend, and they had all kinds of special celebrations. And we even got to go up in the Church Tower, which is a rare occurrence! 🙌🙌 So now my goal is to work on editing that footage before the anniversary of the Jubilee 😬... hey, maybe I should publish it coronation weekend!
Hiya Pip! If I recall you live in Oxfordshire or nearby, right? Lovely to be able to explore these parts often... I feel the same way living in Cheltenham! It is a beautiful place, and the quiet wee villages like this are always my most fave
What fun to hike across the fields and come to a village! I just love the public footpath system and so wished I would have had the time to sample them when we were there. We did not get to visit Naunton unfortunately. They are so many beautiful aspects in the Cotswolds; never a bad photo to be found! ❤ Just before the speed limit sign, there are birds chirping and I am trying to find out what kind of bird that would be. I heard it frequently in the UK, but have not been able to find anyone who knows.
We visited Britain with birders in 2018 and 2019 and they were always identifying birds! I'm rubbish at it unfortunately! I'll see if @malcom flibbleghast can help us out! And yes, it would be idyllic to have the time (and the good feet!) to hike through all these little villages in the Cotswolds! Start out in Bourton with an early breakfast and then hike over to Naunton and beyond! That would be so fun!
Seeing the road sign reminds me that I passed a road sign this week warning of hedgehogs crossing, apparently there is a sign warning of otters but you'll have to go to Shetland to see that
Yes, they have the Otter Crossing sign on Mull as well. Which is why I really want to go for a visit! And as a bonus, Isle of Mull cheddar is quite delicious !! I'm disappointed that you didn't stop and take a photo of the Hedgehog sign for me!🥺
The sun dail is pointing at the number 12, which would suggest it's midday. However, I suspect this dial was made before we 'standardised' time in England for the train timetables. Therefore it may actually be 1pm when you were filming this. I hope that makes sense!
Yes, I agree! It was 1 PM, but it would have been noon if it weren't for this silly daylight savings time thing. And then the sundial would've been accurate 😉
I did see a page saying Americans had problems reading Roman numerals. The sundial says midday. I expect its a bit slow because someone forgot to change it. Either that or they forgot to wind it up. 😂😂 I wish you'd taken a note of the exact time. That would indicate whether the sundial was very old or a late addition post 1840. I don't remember ever seeing a vertical sundial. Maybe the church was so poor they couldn't afford a clock?
Yes, the funny thing is this village and many others like it would have been very poor in the 19th century but now are crazy expensive. You must be right about the fact that they forgot to change it to summer daylight savings and thus it is off by an hour.
@@MagentaOtterTravels They were in use in French villages in 1969. Think there are very few pumps and water fountains still in operational use in England today. There were quite a few when I was a boy.
The sundial appeared to be about an hour slow. Perhaps the church needs winding up. Or the sun. That's the problem with sundials, they tend to be fixed in one place, and as we know, depending on the time of the year, the sun is in different positions in the sky. I love the Cotswolds and have done since I did a jigsaw puzzle of a Cotswold village when I was young. I'd live there if I was wealthy enough. But instead I'll just have to look at photos and dream.
You and me both! Cotswold homes definitely have a hefty premium on their price! I loved hearing about you putting together a puzzle of the Cotswolds ... I can just picture that! We don't use the phrase "chocolate box" in the US for villages like this, but it definitely is a chocolate box/jigsaw puzzle kind of place! And yes, I'm pretty sure that Sundial I was installed before people started doing the ridiculous daylight savings thing ! 🙄 Thanks so much for your comment! Cheers! Dara
I dunno, but I think I could really go for some clotted cream fudge right now 😋Lovely village. I can see why you love it. Would you ever consider moving to one of these little villages or does the big smoke just have too many conveniences?
Excellent question! When I first decided to look for a place to buy in England, I did want to live in a village like this! But because I don't drive in Britain, I really need to live in a town that has the basic things I need within walkable distance. As for fudge, clotted cream fudge sounds fantastic, but have you actually eaten the stuff that is in those mass-produced boxes with postcard images on the front of them? They sell them in all the tourist trap places in Britain and the fudge is dry and crumbly and nasty ...
@@MagentaOtterTravels I know what you mean by the dry and crumbly fudge. We went to a touristy town with a fudge shop recently. It was okay but not great. We did find another shop, on a farm a couple of hours away, that was sensational. They do mail order but I choose to pretend they don't because it would be disastrous for the waistline 😂
The Sundial says it is nearly 12 using Roman numerals, but it is the correct time for a Sundial. It would be nearly 1 but Sundials usually don't/can't factor in daylight savings, especially one that old.
The dovecotes were groupings of pigeon holes... sometimes a little "condo" on top of another barn or building, or they were standalone buildings like this one. I was happy to see some birds in this one! I usually don't...
Oh. It's just possible that the upstairs floor was a Cheese Room. 'A separate cheese room could also be provided in a loft above the dairy or in the attic of the farmhouse.'🧀 That's what I'm going for. I don't care if it's wrong. 😁
Isn't that hilarious?! I only noticed that when I was doing the final edit. Otherwise I would have said something. I think that's really funny! What's also funny is that an American restaurant would never do that! We would give garlic bread with a pasta dish but never ever do we serve french fries with pizza or pasta 🤣
How comes it went from 7 down to 5000 subs,I’m not Einstein but I know when things don’t add up,mathematically. I suggest foul play. I’m getting a bit fed up with these bribe taking w---s excuse my French.
At the mo I have 5,011... but my growth was great a couple months ago and recently has slowed to a standstill. In fact, I hit 5K subs last Sunday but waited a few days to post about it because I didn't want to lose subs overnight and celebrate as my count dropped to 4,997! It's a crazy business... but I just put my head down and keep cranking out more vids, brutha! ;-) Thanks for being a longtime member of the tribe. It means a lot to us! Cheers, Tony!
If you guys get lucky enough to be here during a heatwave, apparently we have one coming this may, I think you should look into Tresco in the scilly Isles. Its limiting with things to do and also times to go and places to stay. But it really is tranquil
I have heard wonderful things about it! We will make it there one day... but probably not this May. We have loads of family events that month😉. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers! Dara

Yes! I don't want any speed demons spoiling my lovely walk through Naunton!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Guess whose stepson just got a speeding ticket?
Superb drone shots Ian! Doesn’t matter how long it took you to get this footage out we all still love it and you have shot it all beautifully! Wow that poppy field is incredible! Such a stunning area! The different windows were interesting! Your love for 🇬🇧 really shows in your videos magenta and magenta flowers and maybe otters perfect 👍 have a great weekend guys 👍💕💕💕💕💕
Dave from North Bedfordshire assured me that there would be a Otters in that river, so I think I need to move to Naunton for sure!!! 💞💞🦦🦦
And yes, I can just imagine the horses and carts pulling up to those doors and being filled with wool from nearby sheep ;-)
Thanks for your comment, Annie! Cheers!
Some very odd looking TV aerials too.
Hello my friend watching from korea enjoy and keep safe my friend full watch and support all the time done to your channel 😊
I live (and work) in The Cotswolds, thank God 😊
You are very lucky indeed! Which village is YOUR favourite?
Thanks for the vlog, I really enjoyed it
Fabulous ❤
I've heard of Taunton but not Naunton! This place is gorgeous! I can see why you named it your favourite Dara!
Taunton is a nice place too... but Naunton has my 💗. Thanks for watching, Susan!
😉. Thanks for watching, Anita.💞
Cheers! Dara
Apologies if already mentioned. Those first floor windows with four frames in one window were very likely weavers cottages. In the rooms where there were looms they needed the best light possible. Prior to the Industrial Revolution weaving was mostly carried out in the weaver’s own house.
That is fascinating! I don't think you mentioned before. Thanks much... I love the historical context! Cheers! Dara
Naunton really is a quiet little gem in the Cotswolds.
You captured it very well indeed Dara. And good on Ian for the drone footage. 👌🏻.
Have you been there?
@@MagentaOtterTravels yes but not filmed. I intend to get more of the Cotswolds this year.
@@WanderingwithWatto fun! I wished that I had filmed the old mill. I can't remember now if I ran out of time or if it was difficult to get to?
@@MagentaOtterTravels I’ll let you know when we go. Got a trip to Cornwall first then to Yorkshire. Then it’s Cotswolds.
Lol
I have already documented my two bell ringing incidents here on the channel, and I'm not sure there will be any future ones!
Although, I actually do have one more to share. This was not in a church, but when we visited the town of Ledbury in Herefordshire, I was able to do a bell ringing tutorial in the market hall! I'm hoping to get that video published sometime in the foreseeable future ... and not take two years this time!🙄
@@MagentaOtterTravels I look forward to seeing it!
@@The_Brit_Girls it was actually a really fun visit! We have been going to Ledbury for 30 years, but this was Jubilee weekend, and they had all kinds of special celebrations. And we even got to go up in the Church Tower, which is a rare occurrence! 🙌🙌
So now my goal is to work on editing that footage before the anniversary of the Jubilee 😬... hey, maybe I should publish it coronation weekend!
Absolutely stunning Dara, the drone really helps just shie how stunning this place really is xx
Thanks Alan! I love wee little quiet villages full of beautiful homes in a gorgeous natural setting 💚... BTW I am currently visiting my brother Alan 😉

I Lways find beauty in the cotswolds. Thankfully so close to me that I can do day trips or stay overnight in my van x
@@MagentaOtterTravels Absolutely!
The loudest one I can hear there is a Jackdaw, I think.
@@kate_k_oxford It is the single chirp; not musical. I love it!
Malcolm says he heard a jackdaw and a goldfinch 😀
I wish you'd taken a note of the exact time. That would indicate whether the sundial was very old or a late addition post 1840.
I don't remember ever seeing a vertical sundial. Maybe the church was so poor they couldn't afford a clock?
I do think it said 12 noon, and since it was 1pm, that probably meant our ancient sundial makers didn't practise daylight savings time ;-)
Yes, the funny thing is this village and many others like it would have been very poor in the 19th century but now are crazy expensive. You must be right about the fact that they forgot to change it to summer daylight savings and thus it is off by an hour.
Better very nice video ❤
Have those pumps still been used?? They look so pretty.
Great question! I should have gone and tried it! I'm not used to pumps in public places... but we sure saw them all over Austria! Are they in Lux too?
Thanks so much for your comment! Cheers!
Yes, that ancient sundial was certainly installed long before the daylight savings nonsense was invented! LOL
@@MagentaOtterTravels Not so much nonsense, it was for farm workers etc to be more productive (war thing also).
Is a dove cut better than a pigeon hole?
All depends what you're using it for! Btw, it's a dove cote.
@@nicksykes4575 😂
@@nicksykes4575 Or ducket if you live in the north east. 😁
The dovecotes were groupings of pigeon holes... sometimes a little "condo" on top of another barn or building, or they were standalone buildings like this one. I was happy to see some birds in this one! I usually don't...
Or doocot in Scotland ;-)
Oh. It's just possible that the upstairs floor was a Cheese Room.
'A separate cheese room could also be provided in a loft above the dairy or in the attic of the farmhouse.'🧀
That's what I'm going for. I don't care if it's wrong. 😁
NOW you're talking!!!! Sign me up!
I liked the Homemade Lasagne description, but what is "a few Chips"🤔😂
Isn't that hilarious?! I only noticed that when I was doing the final edit. Otherwise I would have said something. I think that's really funny! What's also funny is that an American restaurant would never do that! We would give garlic bread with a pasta dish but never ever do we serve french fries with pizza or pasta 🤣
@@MagentaOtterTravels we serve chips with everything, even curry

So you'll be moving soon
To Naunton? Only when the d Bakehouse goes on the market!
Birds are wonderful until you're trying to record a voice-over and they are right outside. 😂
Still, I'd rather have a bird in the background than a screaming baby or a weed trimmer/lawn mower. Those have REALLY been tricky for my VO! haha
