  • In this latest episode of Exploring the Cotswolds, we start in Lower Slaughter, moving through the famous village of Bourton on the Water, onto Northleach, moving east to Burford and Witney, visiting all the villages in-between.
We're following in the trail of Herbert Evans, who wrote a book called "The Highways and Byways of Oxford and the Cotswolds", published in 1905, one hundred and fifteen years ago.
We uncover the history, stories, hidden gems and anecdotes from the wonderful Cotswolds, and present them to you in these half hour documentaries.

I love the Slad Valley ever since I first discovered it (so secluded it is, and now you've let the cat out of the bag!) Now enhanced further by the signposted Laurie Lee trail, which has relevant poems of his inscribed onto glass insets in wooden waymarkers at various points. It's a gorgeous route at any time of year but particularly in autumn 🍁🍂

Lower Slaughter especially back in the 80`s when it was a lot more quiet. Many lovely picnics there and lying on the road with my head under the bridges looking for trout. Bibury was also a special place but last time I was there (3 years ago) the river seemed to be very dirty compared to how it used to be.

I have so enjoyed this series and the history behind the Cotswolds. It brought memories back to the time of my girlhood when my parents took me to a small part of the area. I am so happy that you have shown me so much more of this part of England. Oh and I love the happy little four legged partner sharing the journey.😘

A beautifully made, filmed and presented video. Great photography and facinating history. We discovered many of these places when staying at the Caravan Club site at Burford, now a regular haunt of ours. The Cotswolds is one of our favourite places, and not too far from our home in Norfolk. As David Bennett said, these would make a lovely addition to a TV channel, as they do deserve a much wider audience. The downside may be, increased visitors to some of the secret gems shown to us viewers! We shall look forward to any more films in the series. they are truly superb.

As a very young boy my family visited the Slaughter villages. Maybe we visited more but the Slaughter names stuck in my boys mind! I have not been down that way again from Scotland. I have enjoyed cycle tours for many years so your reference to Herbert Evans' cycle tour encouraged me to get a copy of his book. Who knows it might trigger a revisit som 60 years on. A great series in pleasant sized bites. Iain

I'm always surprised, that a professional and highly informative production such as yours doesn't seem to gain much in the way of likes or subscribers. It certainly deserves more.
I've visited the Cotswolds for the first time in August 2019 and I would have been back by now had it not been for the current Covid-19 crisis. It will now be some time before I'll be able to visit this magnificent part of England again, due to the financial hardship this crisis causes me. I will be back though and I was wondering if we could meet up. I would so very much like to pick your brain. Stay safe and healthy! 🙏🏼😌

It's called Cobb House. There are lots of Cobb houses around the area. Most are quite grand. I haven't yet discovered the origin of the name Cobb, with a double b. I will do my best to find out. I don't think it should be confused with Cob house which is a reference to a simple but efficient method of building warm simple homes.
