Yes, insanely tight and funky! These guys were truly musicians' musicians, no wonder Frank Zappa lauded them as a very interesting band around this time (ca 1975).
Putting the slow zoom in on Weathers at exactly 2:29 must be one of the greatest artistic decisions by anyone ever, on any medium. Props to the Dutch TV people.
I was 14 when that concert aired - and I saw it there and then. Usually, the "ZDF Sonntagskonzert" only aired classical music, which I just can't get my head around. But that day, the on-cam host said, "And now one of the besta bands in rock!" I was like, "ROCK? HELL YEAH!" "Gentle Giant!" What? Total blank. Never heard of them. I listened and was converted instantly and became a lifelong GG fan - and of course, prog rock. If I only got to keep one DVD, it would be this one. The most influential concert of my whole life.
What an unusual yet totally catchy song. As a violinist, cellist, bassist, flutist, singer and on and on, these talented cats impress the heck out of me. Tight compound rhthyms, equally tight, fascinating melodic and harmonic twists. GG's music never wears out. Superb musical artists.
I saw this band twice in my lifetime in little small venues and while they're even better live, you can't even believe it ,at one time throughout the concert they're all playing the drums, they're all playing guitar at one time I mean it they're just unbelievable musicians ,you can't believe how great they are,in concert. .

This band is truly a miracle. What brought these men together to play such complex yet beautiful music? Appreciated by so few in their time, only now gaining the recognition that they deserve? Will we ever see anything like this again?
I believe Giant will never get 10% of the recognition they deserve. They are the tighest band of all time, took me years to admit, but they are tightest than Zappa.
@@associar6379 Yes, Zappa mentioned them in interviews around this time as a really good band who deserved more attention. As a bandleader with high standards he woould have known... GG were not completely a cult act in the seventies - they toured extensively, even headlining at large halls across Europe and the US, and produced roughly one studio album per year all through the decade - but they never broke through to really wide audiences the way Yes, Supertramp, Mike Oldfield, Jethro Tull or Roxy Music were able to do. Definitely a less "hooky" band than those...
I saw them live during this period and just listened to several of these videos back to back. Man what a flashback and what an amazing band. These guys were incredible and relentless in blowing your mind. Mesmerizing in every way
Makes me wish I had been born in the 40's or early 50's. Then I could've been old enough to see them live. Man I really missed out on something very special. Their sense of syncopation and rhythm is impressive! Not just in the bass & Drums but also in the keys & even lead vocals. This band is amazing!
Hey - the drummer looks like THE giant on their LP covers. THESE guys can PLAY! Unbelievable talent, great songs, I just loved them so much 30+ years back and still love them today. My absolute favorite is "Three Friends" - it has it all: cross harmonies, unusual and interesting melodies, fantastic drumming, keyboard and guitar - AND, most importantly, IT ROCKS!!!
Some ten years ago I was looking into artists and bands that Frank Zappa actually liked. In one interview he mentioned Gentle Giant. This was the first video I found and they immediately turned into one of my favorite bands of all time. Thanks Frank
this is what i like about Gentle Giant, they had soul and put lots of emotion into their music, there's lots of prog rock bands who get all technical but sound kinda stale and lifeless
Gentle Giant is for me the band that I keep on playing. It is only a pitty that there is so little good quality video material made of them. Their music is never boring. I think it is sad that so many reactions are on about the looks and assumptions on drug abuse. These guys were just a lot more than an image, they were musical genius.
Saw them twice in the 1970s. Never seen anything like this again. Musical perfection, great compositions. Today's computer musicians could learn a lot from GG. ... and in "Proclamation" they are only playing on 4 instruments and only 3 of the band members are singing.
You know what’s crazy? This is the first video I ever watched on RUclips....not long after it was first uploaded. I was searching for live Gentle Giant videos and found this....on “RUclips” (whatever that is). Gentle Giant introduced me to RUclips hahahha
I have been there since they started. I have seen them play live. They are magnificent. Legendary, like King Crimson or early Genesis and Yes, Van Der Graf Generator. Etc
it's hard not to like how they adapt their songs to the live sets as well as the little details, swapping the strings for the Wurlitzer after the second break sounds incredible
Absolutely blows my mind away, such genius, definitely one of the better Prog groups of that time and overall - they really pushed the envelop in the sense of creativity, composition, and musicianship.
About ten years ago at the Golden Prague festival, I had the pleasure to have a lengthy chat with the director of this TV transmission, Mr. Christopher Nupen, who was one of the most prominent TV directors in classical music of his time. He said that he had never met more focused musicians than the Gentle Giant (and he had seen the lot). He didn't need to convince me.
The situation we are in at this time Neither a good one, nor is it so unblessed It can change, it can stay the same I can say, I can make my claim Hail, hail, hail
Probably the best live band I have ever seen!--- Five men on one drum kit,- each played the other's instruments,- vocal harmonies were so complicated they made your head spin. I feel great sadness for those of you who did not and now cannot ever experience a GG gig!
So, although John Weathers looks pretty much exactly like the Gentle Giant from the album covers, he didn't join the band until several albums in, well after they toned down their use of the Giant in their promo. Although they did bring the Giant back in a big way for their less than stellar "Giant For a Day" LP where you could cut a paper mask of the Giant out of the front of the album jacket. Mine, thankfully, remains intact.
Just WOW. What a performance. Dig this because it sounds just like the album cut, which was probably done in a single take....no overdubs needed...these guys are so absolutely tight like the Big Band musicians of old.
Any expression of ones self or of anything through the medium of sound is music. No matter how bad or good it may be. This is fantastic creativity at work here. I gravitate towards progressive rock style bands because they explore their sounds a lot more, and I can identify best with that. Music in the pop industry, at least right now, tends to be more mathematical and safe. I don't like it very much at all, in fact, I can't tell you the name of 3 pop songs and their artists in the last 10 years, but in essence, it is still music.
CrankyHankyPanky The word “music” is like the word “art”. Every type of organized sound (or even random sometimes) would be considered music. But for those who really love music, they care about originality. Then they usually elevate their definition of music to something more authentic and deep. It's very hard to judge what is original or not, but it's easy to judge what moves us. I think that should always be the main thing. However, we see someone like Dylan: good music, good approach, full of real feeling. But then you hear Woody Guthrie and realize that Dylan was not really original. The thing is: usually people don't want something different. They want something that sounds like what they've heard before.

It's so great to see that today's teens have discovered, and in fact, appreciate The Giant! Their complex style can easily be underestimated and completely overlooked as nothing like it is being created today. I discovered Gentle Giant while in college and took to them instantly! Even had a the good fortune to see them live in the mid-70's.... Their music is timeless. Long live Gentle Giant!
I saw them play around 1975. They were featuring "The Power and The Glory" and it was exhausting to watch. I had always assumed there were at least a dozen of them, but there were were only five or six moving back and forth between a large array of musical instruments. The writing and the subject matter was absolutely brilliant because it dealt with power, glory, abuse of power, loss of power, public humility and justification. A.K.A: The Nixon Years
RIP John Barry genius songsmith. Arise Gentle Giant, both different, both awesome in their talents and both loved by me, and maybe a couple of others...... ;-) RIP John Barry, you gave us so much spine tingleossity with your effortless tunesmith craft. Trav insane for sampling this 🐐🐐

This is the like the only band to take fully fledged vocal harmonies seriously besides maybe Queen. I love it.
Travis Scott brought me here 🔥🔥👍🙏 I love sampled beats
I remember before they had a million views back in HS used to just smoke with my friends listen to mad prog loved it.
Incredible how travis scott used this song on his intro of HYAENA on Utopia, geez this aged really good.
Wow. I haven't heard this for years! Thanks for uploading.
Someone after to listen hyena by tavis??
you get that this is way better than Travis
It's so great to see that today's teens have discovered, and in fact, appreciate The Giant! Their complex style can easily be underestimated and completely overlooked as nothing like it is being created today. I discovered Gentle Giant while in college and took to them instantly! Even had a the good fortune to see them live in the mid-70's.... Their music is timeless. Long live Gentle Giant!
Excellent Prog band-superb writing/musicianship--vastly underrated!!
Undeniably underrated, great musicians, pull this off live!@##🙃🙃🙃😲😲🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
3:16 This part sounds like an avant-garde version of Yes.
Olga Nesterowicz The magic of Prog-Rock for you.
never compaire an apple with a peer, PERIOD
progessive? who invented this label anyhow must be oldfashionated as Hek
Err....What? Thats the genre of music. Progressive Rock. Yes, King Crimson, Gentle-Giant, Styx, etc. etc. All have that label.
i know that, but what is progressive about iit compared to 'normal rock, or distinquist rock, old rock etc. You see what I mean?
I saw them play around 1975. They were featuring "The Power and The Glory" and it was exhausting to watch. I had always assumed there were at least a dozen of them, but there were were only five or six moving back and forth between a large array of musical instruments.
The writing and the subject matter was absolutely brilliant because it dealt with power, glory, abuse of power, loss of power, public humility and justification.
A.K.A: The Nixon Years
Travis has some amazing taste.
RIP John Barry genius songsmith.
Arise Gentle Giant, both different, both awesome in their talents and both loved by me, and maybe a couple of others...... ;-)
RIP John Barry, you gave us so much spine tingleossity with your effortless tunesmith craft.
Such a shame GG weren't revered as much as you - they deserved it.
