There were a lot of old games that were programmed in various types of assembly. Once the core functionality of the instruction set was understood, the main tactic is to custom build routines that allow for abstraction just like in higher level languages and build up from there. That way instead of writing 15 lines of code every time he wanted to print a message to the player, he just wrote one custom routine that could display any message sent to it. It isn't easy, but with the right planning it's not as torturous as it sounds to make an assembly game. Planning out the functionality of the code beforehand is probably harder than actually writing it.

Xennial here. Interesting that you mentioned RCT predating The Sims, because RCT was actually a relative latecomer to the construction-management simulation genre of computer games that originally began with Utopia (1982) by Intellivision and then popularized by SimCity (1989) from Maxis (Will Wright). I genuinely think it's insane for any developer to be against modding. Like, a healthy modding community is the main thing that can turn a good game into something immortal. Apparently one of the craziest things with Rollercoaster Tycoon is that it was almost entirely made in assembly just so that the game could accurately compute the people and economy efficiently enough to be played. It’s apparently pretty optimized in that respect. Edit: Just saw that this was mentioned in the vid. Posted this before then oop
its hilarious to hear 'default crowd noises' in other media that was used in RCT. I think the hours we all put into the game just hardcoded those noises into us that we can instantly recognize it.
Probably the best description of Assembly I've ever heard. In my engineering classes we used to remind each other RCT was built in assembly to give us the motivation to complete our CS assignments.
A quintessential documentary on a timeless game that ignites me with hyper-focused nostalgia. This game was so beautifully design that it made me smile when I heard the corny theme music and sound bites of riders screaming for the first time in a couple decades. The other night, I coincidentally downloaded Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic in a sentimental fever dream but had no idea of the epic back story to legendary coaster man Chris Sawyer. In college, I wrote one program in assembly language then promptly returned to the comfort of modern programming languages. It never occurred to me to write something other than the simplest, lowest-level programs in assembly. Chris is truly the GOAT for bestowing this wondrous game and technical feat upon us. Thank you for sharing his story with us. God bless ✨

It's weird that I just saw someone else's video about how amazing RTC is like a month ago. That led me down a rabbit hole of videos about how brilliant the game's code was. Then I discovered this channel maybe a couple weeks after. Then today I see this video pop up on my feed. It would be easy to chalk it up to the RUclips algorithm just showing me another RTC video but the first video I saw was over 2 years old. Not sure what compelled Gabbi to make a video about RTC but from my perspective the whole thing ended up seeming very serendipitous.
As someone who is technologically challenged, I really appreciate your coding examples that even I could understand. Super interesting. Oh, and I love this game, it’s the best 😍
After my first year of high school, my mom had me (forced) volunteer to go for a month-long STEM and coding program at the NJIT in Newark...some of it was HELL (learning the coding, video gaming programming, even SAT prep bit) but the rest was nice (making new friends, going on interesting field trips, even a few parties). I got a few certificates from the program, and while I never intend to pursue this kind of career, I respect people who actually are good at this and want to accomplish having a career like that.
This video was peak content, I grew up playing the original zoo tycoon but always wanted to try rollercoaster tycoon! I had no idea the creator was a tech wizard. Massive props to him and massive props to you for covering the development so thoroughly!
There was a game like this, it was called Transport Tycoon, made by the same guy in 1994. It was similarly adictive. I like roller coaster better because it was level based and you had a goal and ofc the individual guests and employees :D, where as in transport tycoon it was more about your one map and going through times and upgrading your infrastructure. Both amazing fucking games that are defo top 10 games for me personally. Love your vids btw! (recently found you through the great algorithm) EDIT: OH you actually mention Transport Tycoon (OFC U DID) lol, nvm my comment xD EDIT2: As a programmer, your analogy of assembly vs higher level programming languages is amazing, I'm gonna have to use that haha.

Been on a kick getting back into RCT, and I've had a LOT of RCT and TS1 content popping up in my feed. This was such a great video!
as a comp sci nerd person, your explanation of programming was pretty great! Thank you for doing it well and not making progammer me want to jump off a cliff in Minecraft!
My thoughts exactly!!
0:03 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
"I wanna get off Mr.Bones wild ride"
This game was one of my favorites as a kid. I had no idea a community of folks were still playing it today. Thanks for the segment on it. Awesome points to you!
I’m not really a fan of these types of games but you got me ready to rethink it all and open a rollercoaster park
You are SERIOUSLY funny.... I am very impressed with what I am seeing here... just well done!
So glad you made this video, used to play the hell out of RCT 1&2
this was a really interesting video! I love hearing people rant about things they like and learning new things especially when it comes to games. there are just a lot of things to explore when it comes to the development, bugs, and unused content that's just fascinating. I can't imagine how tough it is to code in assembly that man really had dedication.
rct2 was such a major game of my childhood, its a CRIMINALLY underrated game
I’ve watched 1’s of videos about the RCT story and this is definitely the most entertaining and educational one I’ve seen.
omg this has been one of my favorites games of all time how did i not know ONE GUY made it?! great vid gabi thanks
Rollercoaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon were my JAM when I was younger
I would laugh so hard in Zoo Tycoon when I let the animals run loose. (Fire your zookeepers first) the watch lions & jaguars maul your guests
I remember that one time I made a log ride called "the shitlog" and it plummeted to a drop off of death. Fun!
gabi, i just found you, and it was about one of my childhood games. I love you. (i still play openTTD today)
I genuinely think it's insane for any developer to be against modding. Like, a healthy modding community is the main thing that can turn a good game into something immortal. I'm certain that if Microsoft or Mojang were to ever drop support for Minecraft, it would still continue to live on forever through projects similar to OpenRCT2.
The CallMeKevin jump scare at 10:45. My boy. My beautiful boy.
I redownloaded RCT after not touching it for a decade, and I can confirm it still slaps.
im not sure why youtube recommended your channel, but it did about a week ago, after watching a few of your videos i subscribed few days later..just had to comment and say i absolutely love your style and humor, keep up the amazing work, i look forward to the videos you continue to make
Apparently one of the craziest things with Rollercoaster Tycoon is that it was almost entirely made in assembly just so that the game could accurately compute the people and economy efficiently enough to be played. It’s apparently pretty optimized in that respect.
Edit: Just saw that this was mentioned in the vid. Posted this before then oop
If this is mentioned in the vid it was posted 4 mins ago and I just got here
That explanation of assembly was just *chef’s kiss*
My favorite fact about it is that it was coded in assembly, which is almost making a game in binary
Why are your vids so consistently good 😭 I cannot handle this, it's too good
To this day, crowd noises anywhere remind me of this game. Good crowded times.
its hilarious to hear 'default crowd noises' in other media that was used in RCT. I think the hours we all put into the game just hardcoded those noises into us that we can instantly recognize it.
Probably the best description of Assembly I've ever heard.
In my engineering classes we used to remind each other RCT was built in assembly to give us the motivation to complete our CS assignments.
GABI WHY IS YOUR HYPOTHETICAL PEANUT BUTTER IN THE FRIDGE
God bless ✨
I have 165 hours in roller coaster tycoon three and I have no shame. This was the start of something beautiful.
Nope. It wasn't beautiful.
my dad and I went on a rollercoaster tycoon binge at the beginning of quarantine. 10/10 great memory.
Do you have a background in computer science?? You explained the CS of the game so well, bravo
man, i learned so much about RCT from this video--fantastic research and great presentation!! cannot believe it was made by 1 guy in Assembly; also--your explanation of Assembly versus modern coding systems was so easy to follow and legit taught me a lot!
That as transition, that was gold. Just pure bliss.
Nope. It wasn't.

I missed out on this video a year late. Love you Gabs! Thanks for being you! ❤️❤️❤️
Losing my silly goofy mind over the love for Callmekevin
I never played Rollercoaster tycoon but I was OBSESSED with zoo tycoon that was my favorite game as a kid
When you forget to finish a roller coaster and accidentally green light it endangering your guest’s lives… But then you realize the lines to different places will get shorter
Subbed out of a random video suggestion a couple months ago, but your channel is becoming one of my favs
Being a rollercoaster enthusiast myself it makes me so happy a relatively large commentary youtuber made a video about a relatively niche hobby

I was so happy when I found out about OpenRCT2, and I could finally play the game without having to worry about error trappers!
I bought RCT2 at a book fair for $6.99 and it’s a strong contender for my favorite game ever, take that $70 AAA slogfests
I spent a lot of hours on Roller Coaster Tycoon. When I saw you covered this I gasped in utter excitement. I am so thrilled to watch this.
Ohhh the sweet sweet memories of making death coasters.
Had to rewind to watch the coaster fly off the rails just made me who I am today
This video was peak content, I grew up playing the original zoo tycoon but always wanted to try rollercoaster tycoon! I had no idea the creator was a tech wizard. Massive props to him and massive props to you for covering the development so thoroughly!
Miss Gabi you always reach directly into my brain with these video topics
ur welcome bobby
There was a game like this, it was called Transport Tycoon, made by the same guy in 1994. It was similarly adictive. I like roller coaster better because it was level based and you had a goal and ofc the individual guests and employees :D, where as in transport tycoon it was more about your one map and going through times and upgrading your infrastructure. Both amazing fucking games that are defo top 10 games for me personally.
Love your vids btw! (recently found you through the great algorithm)
EDIT: OH you actually mention Transport Tycoon (OFC U DID) lol, nvm my comment xD
EDIT2: As a programmer, your analogy of assembly vs higher level programming languages is amazing, I'm gonna have to use that haha.
