  • Studying at ETH Zurich is challenging, and all students have their own personal hurdles to overcome. This short video series gives a somewhat different insight into everyday life as a student. It provides an account of three students, their setbacks and how they dealt with them.
    In the second episode, Master’s student Sarper Melik Ertekin tells us why he has learned not to compare himself to others.

    Coming to eth for mechanical engineering with rather poor education in all stem relevant subjects, especially math, was the biggest challenge of my life. I had to retake the bp because I wasn't used to the workload nor lifestyle. I do find myself comparing myself to others more than i should. It is an ongoing struggle. But keep in mind that as long as you can look back on your own development and feel proud of it, you're doing perfectly fine

    As someone who teaches at ETH I think this is a great video and drives home an important point that I sometimes try to convey myself. But it is much better coming from a student.

    Great video! And the fact that it is hosted on the college's official channel is even more amazing. I am also glad that the student here is recognising the things he is realising, and not actually giving up. Very happy that the support system that he has is allowing him to continue and shine.
    As a person who is currently in a career which wasn't exactly aligned with my education, I have also had to work harder than others in the room, spending my personal time learning the concepts, just to be able to speak up and avoid sounding stupid. But just remembering that these short term hardships only strengthens us helped me stay determined.
    You'll do great things my friend. :) If you ever come back to this video and see this comment, do let us know how your life is going on right now ☺️

    I feel the most people feel the same way. People only see the top 10% and thought they represent the majority of others😂

    Thank you for the video. It was in the best moment. I will do next week my last exam of my master at ETH. I cried because I think my master grades are just not good enough and I can never fix this in my life. This sucks!
    No one in the swiss job market is interested in these grades as long as you are good in programming, but I know it for myself, that I was not able to understand the lectures, this is actually the hardest thing to admit and I will never understand a big part of the theory - even not the "basics".
    After learning so much math and physics I am still not able to work with that. I will get a job as a software engineer or as a consultant - like all other people who did their Bachelor and Master at the Fachhochschule - but with the difference, that I know now that I am stupid.
    Anyway, ETH is a great university, where great minds can do great things!

      Thanks for your comments. Currently under job searching and always wonder if my grade is a minus point on my resume. Rationally I know it's not a big deal and the relevant experience matters more but just can't control those minds sometimes.
      And personally I would be more willing to know I am stupid if that's the case rather than don't know what I don't know ;) That's the good side ETH brings to us.

      @@cutici7606 Thank you too!
      I think you will not have problems to find a very good paid job! Really not! I made two internships as a software engineer and I needed just maybe 2-4 weeks to find them (and my grades are complete mediocre: 4,5 in Bachelor 5,2 in Master, actually I am worse than the average..) both places offered me that I could stay or return if I wish. In all cases I had to do a programming exercise during the interview, they didnt even check/know my grades. (they give you a short problem and you have to code it or find mistakes or bottle necks in the code, they often use stuff from HackerRank)
      But I am still sad. I would love to understand physics and math, it is such a great knowledge - and it really upsets me that my "chances" do understand it are over now. I think no one can handle to work full time and keeping up with the newest research in physics. So I just have to accept it, that I will not be a part of that.
      Like in Plato's allegory of the cave - i am not sure if it helps for the happiness of life if you know that "there" is a lot of interesting things, but I will never know them.
      I still hope that the good money comforts me a bit. :-)

      Hey, don't say that you're stupid! First, intelligence is a concept that is not defined by your understanding in one or 2 subject. For example, the greatest mathematicians are often people with poor social intelligence. Plus, don't forget that you're competing with really special people there, and you still manage to pass, that means that compared to the general population you are special and extremely qualified. And you are a software engineer, so your future is pretty much set (good pay and comfortable life). Don't put yourself down brother!

      @@nbveneno9452 Thank you much for you good words! i appreciate it!
      @Studious Boi, I did physics and from the beginning I had a super hard time to get grades over 4. The master was better, bc the written exams that were thousand times harder for me as the oral exams were mostly over, but I still never could make super grades. And I learned 6-7/7 days especially in the semester break. My preparation from high school/college was extremely poor. My math skills were practically non-existent. Some swiss "Gynmasiums" are really not worth to visit them.

    Let’s be honest, if his colleagues took 2 hours to do it and he took the entire weekend it means they collaborated, whether legitimately or not I don’t care

    • @kashparty
      @kashparty 2 года назад +7

      It was a coding task right? Maybe his colleagues just had way more experience than him at that point. The initial learning curve can be very steep adding a lot of hours exploring dead-end ideas that more experienced programmers would not be distracted by.

    • @dsgarden
      @dsgarden 2 года назад +3

      @@kashparty That would be explained by 3 to 4 hour difference, not 12! I have observed what many students do in this uni, so I'm pretty sure I know whats happening

    • @dsgarden
      @dsgarden 2 года назад +4

      @@kashparty Also I'm not trying to promote any hate against any nationality, but in one of the ML courses I knew a Turk student (now has a very high average grade) who copied one of his Turkish friend's solution and uploaded the results ("his" solution was in top 10 of the submiited solutions out of 300). Of course now if he applies to any project in ML, he will be the most likely candidate, thanks to his dishonesty obviously. Many foreign students in Zurich think that because the odds are against them (due to racism of course) they are justified to act as they wish, and the more that group is targeted the more they turn to dishonesty. This is something you will never find on this channel: an honest discussion of racism

    Is it a must to know German in order to take a Bachelor's at ETH?

    • @sarinaleupp239
      @sarinaleupp239 2 года назад +3

      Bachelor usually is approx half german half english, especially in the end it switches to mainly english courses. In contrast to masters where everything is english. Students however speak mostly german, so for the social part of your studies it would be convenient if you would be able to speak german. It‘s not a must though, most of them can speak english as well.
      I think it also depends a bit on your degree.
      E.g. in medicine, the bachelor is in german, it‘s a bit of an exception though.
      Lg a medicine bachelor student
