    Real brown sugar has been rare to extinct where I live, so I now make my own... One cup of organic cane sugar to about 1 1/2 Tbsps. organic unsulfured blackstrap molasses. You can mix by hand... takes a while, or use a stand mixer. I get the sugar from Costco and the molasses from my local health food store. I'm 80 years old this year, and when I first made this a year ago, I was in heaven... this was the brown sugar of my childhood... it is soooo good on oatmeal.

      That sounds wonderful and I wonder if the consistency is about the same? I would just be a little bit concerned it would have to high a moisture content for this extraction process

    Pro tip- use fish during their spawn time. The fish eggs and sperm have a lot of fatty acids and lipids that will take it to the next level.

      Apparently you are presumimg those 'ingredients' didn't already exist within the fish before the fish formed the gametes. That makes no sense.

      @@charinabottae When the fish is making eggs it has to consume more of those “ingredients” to make the eggs than if the fish is just sustaining itself. Therefore a higher percentage of the overall mass is amino acids. What do you not understand?

      @@PeteGA Pete, if that was the case, the op would have said there would be *more* fatty acids and lipids. The clear inference is the presence of something otherwise absence from spawning fish. By your logic, I could simply add more fish to make up the volume of what a spawning fish would consume, and that again renders the op as pointless as it's just about the mass of the fish. What is missing is 1) the op's validation of the "pro" tip as having any data, let alone logic, and 2) your failure to see that.

      @@charinabottae And you know what? You’re just wrong and obviously don’t understand what he said. He said “the fish eggs and sperm have a lot of fatty acids and lipids” that doesn’t mean the fish doesn’t also have fatty acids and lipids. He was just making the point that the eggs and sperm have those “ingredients” at a higher percentage by mass.
      So no, adding more fish doesn’t give you the same percentage of fatty acids and lipids because eggs and sperm have a higher concentration. Therefore, a batch made with spawning fish will have higher concentrations of fatty acids and lipids. If you’re gonna be an annoying Reddit nerd, at least be technically correct.

    Great information! After years of gardening I have come to realize how much I was missing the mark for a thriving garden, Your videos not only explained how to make the necessary changes, but also explained why these things are necessary for the plants. This weekend I am getting mulch from a client after doing drywall and landscaping. He is also teaching me how to clean his pond which I can have as much of the pond gold that I would like. Needless to say, I am very hopeful that these will help with my garden for compost as well as for mulching the raised garden beds, and ind ground planters. My mindset has had a definite shift from a survival mode to Thriving. Thank you and your family for sharing such helpful information. Thrive on my friends.

    The best type of fish for making organic fertilizer is sardines. I saw a farm in Saudi Arabia using this method .. 1 kg sardines + 1 kg white sugar + a small cup of lactobacillus bacteria (you can make these bacteria at home).. Regular fish fertilizer must be added with iron fertilizer because the percentage of iron in it is low, but sardine fertilizer has a high percentage of iron.

    I’m sure there are lots of redheaded “Nates” of Scandinavian decent who are avid, dare I say survivalist gardeners, who have beards and that exact haircut (currently). 😂 You’ve given me good tips. Here’s one for you: zucchino rampacante. It’s a curcubita moschata that grows prolifically, is squash vine borer resistant, produces zucchini-like squash when taken young, and matures into something like butternut squash when left on the vine to harden off. They have that butternut squash hardness and color. They’ll easily grow to over three feet if you’re not careful. Still tastes and cooks like zucchini. I have several hardened off squashes from last year in a closet. Still edible and pretty good, although after almost a year, they’ve gotten a spaghetti squash texture (oh bummer) and have lost some of its flavor. You can completely neglect them, and they’ll still produce long into summer. They are nutritious, too. The ultimate survival garden plant.

      I think that might be considered a different process if you do that. Just like if you use Lactic acid bacteria to do it. Those are digestive enzymes as well but then it is hydrolysate and not fish amino acid. But it’s still good but FAA is supposed to be better

    Been saving some whole mackerel for this! I think it was $2 a pound.
    It’s in the freezer, so my house still smells like a dang rose

    Questions: can you use fish bones, or only entire fish? Can you use canned fish? In this video did you use 2 bags of sugar or just 1? How much liquid (litre or quart or whatever) do you expect to get from your mixture in this video? Is this shelf stable? Can this solution be kept for several years if I don't use it up in one season? Will the bones also dissolve, is there any residue in the end?

    Hi Nate.... and everybody else who has tried this FAA: Has anybody tried this? I tried 2 small batches, and Oh Boy was it ever MESSY to strain out the liquid... the second was worse than the first... (I made a mistake with the first one...) I kept thinking there must be a better way. So this is my suggestion: first insert the fine mesh strainer/paint strainer inside the container you are going to use, then add the fish and brown sugar mixture as usual. After 1 or 2 months or whatever, gather the mesh strainer and lift it up and out of the container. Pour out the FAA into a separate container. Put the mesh back to continue the process. This sounds a more proficient method in theory. I am going to try this next.

      I don't think you waited long enough for the digestion to happen because my FAA is almost all liquid by the time I strain it out... a simple mesh strainer is totally sufficient... let me know how the paint strainer works for you because yes in theory it seems ok but in practice not so sure!

    This method of extracting bio available nutrients from fish is actually so clutch. Here I am thinking I won’t be able to us the JADAM FAA till later on in the season after I’ve caught something, and little did I know a useable “better” version can be made in a fraction of the time! Nate I gotta hand it to you, you single handedly have helped me to organize my growing setup AND my perspective on the growing season itself. At some point this year I’ll have to send you an update of my garden, truly thank you!

    Fish hydrolysate is absolutely killer stuff. It's just so much quicker to make but still has all the Fish Amino acids/fats/oils in it. Also it doesn't smell bad, it's got that vinegary aroma.

    I had a freezer full of trout so I decided to commit and do it. I grabbed some leaf mold from the white oak in my front yard. I stacked the fish and brown sugar. Then I topped it with leaf mold and a scoop of Azomite and kelp meal. My garden beds are smelling earthy. I got high hopes this year.

    I made this about 3 years ago and have not used it because I didn’t know how lol but the fish has turned stiff and the all the brown sugar has turned into this beautiful black glossy color kind of like a demi glace sauce with a sweet pleasant smell, can wait to use it!

    I love that you say things like ‘osmotic pressure’. It makes me feel like a mad scientist when I’m making these potions. Sooo much cooler than buying fish fertilizer at the store.
    I forgot to collect leaf mould last fall for use early spring. The ground is covered with a good couple feet of snow so I’m not getting any anytime soon. Won’t be making that mistake again this year!
    Can I start this and add leaf mould later or is it only worth while at the beginning?

      yes my friend we are all mad scientist here!!... if you don't have the leaf mold its ok just omit that step and it will still work just fine!

    Thanks Nate, I made this 2 years ago and it went a dark brown, I made some last year again and it's still in the jar but its went black instead, I've still got the light brown stuff left and use it, I wonder what it really is, it doesn't smell at all. From what I'm lead to believe if its left for a long time everything including the bones will have been chewed up.

      yes absolutely everything gets digested after a couple years even the bones and most of the scales

    @GardenLikeaViking if the fish is less than fresh, and has started to smell, will that cause problems with this process?
    We used 7 pounds of fish 3, of which had started to turn, and added 9 pounds of sugar with your layering method.
    FYI, we found mackerel at a large Asian grocery for $2.50 a pound! All parts sliced easily into “coins” with a serrated knife.

    Nate Love your show and plan to us as much of your system at i can this year on a new garden site in Northern MO. I am in the process of making as many of your fertilizers as I can. I know you show us how to use/amount per gallon. However, could you please show us how to store it? How long they will store? And what to store in and where?       welcome to the channel my friend!!... the FAA is the longest storing of all the fish fertilizers and basically once its fully digested and you strain it off into a glass bottle it will last several years... I've had some on the shelf for two years and it doesn't look or smell any different than the day I poured it into the jar...

    Do you have an experience with using liquified fish guts and mixing it with molasses and letting it ferment. I assume the sugar is what keeps the smell down plus speeds it up while making for a well balanced fertilizer and less or no sugar would take longer and be higher in nitrogen when complete plus it would stink just like any high nitrogen manure

      Just my opinion, yes. Especially if the worms have been feeding on good quality leaf mold!

      if you've got some very high quality castings from worms fed a fungal rich diet then yes that can work... its just a small dusting on the top thats all we need to introduce the microoganisms... you can also omit that step completely and just use the sugar and fish that still works great but smells more intensely

    Aloha from Hawaii! Has this ever been done with substituting the brown sugar with a very sweet fruit like payaya? Hoping to find something local instead of buying imported brown sugar. Our papaya is abundant and very sweet. Good enzymes in the seeds too.

      you can certainly make other things with the papaya but it will not work for this particular concoction because we need the osmotic pressure from the brown sugar to extract and digest the fish proteins and papaya will simply not do that at all

      you can do something similar but fish is the only thing to use with this sugar method... for red meats its best to hot compost them or place into a barrel with the leaf mold and water like in the other fish fertilizer video I made... it definitely works great just takes a lot longer to digest than fish does

      not for this brew it will not be helpful... this is a slow digestion and we want it that way... everything in here will totally liquify on its own except a handful of bones.... if you want to use the grinder watch my video on fish hydrolysate and use the grinder and it takes only two weeks!

    I am new to gardening and love your videos, thank you. I also have a question. I live in fare west Texas in the middle of the desert and have no access to leaves of any kind, so no leaf mold for me. What other types of things could I use? I know you mentioned that you could just leave it out, but if there is something else that I could use instead. More nutrients the better, I would think, maybe, not sure really.       If you don't have the access to the high-quality leaf mold it is OK to just omit all together and only use the sugar and the fish it will still work wonderfully

    Hey Nate:
    I've been faithfully applying your knowledge but as a "New B" I've produced each of the fish ferts you suggested then found this video.
    I have 5 gal fish hydro, 5 gal JDAM fish liquid fert (slow version) and now I learn that FAA is tops.
    I'm just a back yard organic gardener with now more fish ferts than I can use. Please suggest a "best path solution" so as to not have fish ferts
    wasting space. I don't have much space.

      ok my friend with the two you have already made there's no need to be making this version this year!... just use the two you have and they are also fantastic and you will see amazing results with them... use them every time you feed the plants especially in the first half of the season and you'll have amazing growth... foliar feed it to them once a week or so

    Sorry to ask this question because you suggest brown sugar but before I discovered you I procured a large amount of molasses. Is the brown sugar so much more advantageous than molasses that I should now purchase brown sugar? I really want this to work.

      for this solution is MUST be brown sugar as the molasses will not give us the osmotic pressure we need here.... but don't worry there's a wonderful use for that molasses and I'll be making a video on that in a few weeks
