If you have any doubt on his singing just go and listen to his songs and that album. Here is the story, The guy in Black was the finalist at Indian Idol. He had sung this song during the competition, Shankar Mahadevan was so impressed that, when he was a guest, he sang the song along with Sriram. Sriram went on to win the Indian Idol that year and is now a singer and Actor in Telgu movie world

i have seen him performing this song in a live concert when he came to our campus.....it was spectacular......everybody was rythmic clapping along with the whole song..............i have seen a lot of indian singers concert in our campus since childhood nd all KK performances as they will make you sing along, Shankar's breathless performance & Agnee band's Aahatein (song) performance are my all time FAVOURITES

The thing about this song is the lyricism: it's so poetic & philosophical and about a kind of love that is unforgettable, that kinda love that drives you mad, makes you lose your mind, and sets you on a journey to find yourself. It's intense. And this version's pace is so frantic... it's taking me to some kinda church!!! Whenever it pops up on shuffle, I feel exhausted when it's finished because it becomes a somewhat immersive and all-encompassing experience for me... although, fortunately it usually ends in giving the feeling of catharsis so it's all good 😜

Exactly what Waleska was saying about the lifting up of the chest or shoulder is normal when we breathe after singing a long verse or singing fast, but when this song is sung in any reality show they just edit it and hide the mistakes ...but the video you guys watch today was a reality show but the guy in black(SREERAM) singing with Shankar sir had sung that song on the same stage without any mistakes and also with no editing they telecast this episode same as it was shot.....you can see and hear him taking breath....and thank you guys love your technical talks......
Shankar Mahadevan is the Music director of this song. I once heard him saying, he has kept spaces for the breath but they are not identifiable easily.

He's definitely breathing in between but it is very carefully orchestrated and practiced. It's like how swimmers are underwater for extended periods where they breathe out and manage their air flow.
Fun fact of this song is that there is no repetition of any lines like other songs do.

That was just half the song by the way.. the actual song(sung by Shankar Mahadevan) is actually divided in two parts... And the lyrics follow a pretty complex but a proper plot, the first guy is contemplating how he wholeheartedly felt in love with a girl who left him one day and now he is left deppressed- this was the first part, then the second part is how he recovers from the depression, gains back his happiness and becomes excited with his life once again, but then that girl returns one day and he gets all the flashbacks of the past, but then the girl apologises to him for leaving and says that she will never leave him again and the guy(its a first person song by the way) forgives her and then its like 'they lived happily ever after'...
This is the legit performance. Good to know Efra read my comment on the last viral reels video with the fake performance of this song. I have enormous respect for Shankar Mahadevan but I don't at all respect anyone who fake performs his legendary song. Thankful for the acknowledgement 🙂

This was the last Indian Idol season that I followed. The guy next to Shankar Sir is Sreeram, he won that season. Next to him is hussain who is actually a very a itv actor. And next to hussain is Abhijit Sawant who was like the first Indian Idol ever. He actually hosted this season with hussain.

1) Maha Praana Deepam (movie- Sri Manjunatha, 2001) sung by Shankar Mahadevan in one take..
This song is actually religious mantras/slokhas chanted in form of a song.. The protagonist is challenged to show his devotion towards Lord Shiva so he sings this song and all the lamps in the temple light up on their own coz of his devotion.. Goosebumps guaranteed for some of us who've been hearing the song since childhood!

If you hear the breathing, that means the singer is actually singing and not lip syncing. The version you watched before was clearly a lip sync.
