I loved just about everything about this game. The thing is its more like a 3d , harder, metroidvania than a souls like IMO. The lore is really sad and impressively deep.
I disliked the platforming/exploration component; the game encourages you to explore with a mantling mechanic but you can only get up Specially Designated Ledges that aren't well indicated, and if you're on a surface they didn't want to account for the player moving around on - like any roof or shed - you just slide off it all awkward-like as though they're trying their hardest to get you "back into the play area", which is the ground.
Soulslikes are inherently Metroidvanias. The main difference is that in Soulslikes you don't lose much progress when you die since you can get your souls back and not just booted to the last savepoint.
This game looks really crisp, and isn't AAA, that's really, really impressive. Also love the enemy designs, best part about mechanical enemies is you get to go wild with their designs, get extra creative, which they certainly seem to have done!
Honestly, it's a great game. I'm really happy that Spiders also allowed for a difficulty scale you can customize at the start of the game. It reminded me of Hades in that way. I've been playing without any of that, and it's honestly been a great challenge. No judgement if anyone wants to use those, though, so I think this would be a great game for others to test out any 'Soulsborne Lite" games out there to see if it's something for you. That's why those options are there. There's been a couple of bugs along the way, mostly with the voicelines not entirely playing through when they should, and sometimes the sound will cut out altogether. Outside of that, though, I've had no other issues with the game. I'm really glad that I got it. I'm still working through the later half of the game, I'm at Versailles, but I love that you're able to go back to earlier levels and find new ways of navigating them depending on skills acquired. It makes the game feel way bigger than the square footage is, and that's always fun in my books. I'm really quite impressed with the polish this game has, and I commend the developers at Spiders for taking their time and really giving this the love that it deserved.
If I'm dogpoop at souls games should I try this anyway? I was only able to get through Nier Automata because of the auto chips ;_; But I love games with rich lore so I'd love to check this out!
@@AGrumpyWitch I would say that yes, you should pick it up if it interests you. The assist mode helps with damage reduction, increased stam regen, easy cooling so that you can have more stamina quicker in fights, and keeping your anima (souls, echoes, etc equivalent in this game) on you when you die. A patch just came out for PS5 (and soon with PC/Xbox) that allows you to obtain the achievements using assist mode. I really like how they implemented these options in this way because you can scale damage reduction and stamina regeneration speeds to your liking. This way, you can still learn enemy attack patterns without fear of messing up, or being too greedy with hits. I mean, you could potentially Godmode the game using it, but I don't think many people will. I personally didn't use the assist mode the first time through because some of the achievements were locked to standard difficulty. Considering that your final save locks you into the credits rolling with no option to go back and explore (yet, they're working on implementing one in prep for the DLC content coming soon), having the assist on will greatly reduce my frustration in subsequent playthroughs with new characters to unlock different endings, for example. I think that someone who's never played a Soulsborne like game, or just want to experience the game because they want to without the frustration, could definitely benefit with the assist mode. I'm not a gatekeeper when it comes to this game genre. I think that there should be something for everyone in a subtype, and that can be achieved in a number of ways. Like you, I also used the auto "I don't feel like pressing that button" chipset in Nier: Automata and I had a blast all the same. The difficulty (or ease of) doesn't negate the time you spend playing it, nor the takeaways from the story and world building. Editing to add: Because there's been multiple reports of bad frame rates, certain key items not dropping, plus other issues, I would recommend you keep this on a wishlist for now. There's been a couple of reviewers saying that the $50 pricepoint isn't great for a broken game with these types of issues. Keep tabs on it and see what the Devs are doing to resolve issues.
