    I always do my first playthroughs of games completely blindly, no wiki searches, no googling stuff, no nothing. I did that too with Terraria almost 5 years ago now. I loved it. Playing a game like this blindly takes a shit load of time dont get me wrong, but the sense of exploration you get from it makes it all worth it for me in the end. The biggest issue I have with the game after over 1500 hours of playing on pc alone is the final boss, which I almost always skip. I know this game is hard and for most people a bit unfriendly to start off with, but trust me try and play this game solo before hopping in with a friend.
    The video was great btw before you think I forgot about that. This is just the insight of someone who's been playing since 1.1 instead of 1.4.

    i agree that it is hard for new players, but terraria has this feeling that i cant explain.
    i bought this game and played it for like 2 hours with my friend, at the start we didnt know what to do and tortured the living hell out of the guide (i know you did to dont lie to yourself) and then we just left the game, after about a year we returned with even more friends and it was probably the best gaming experience of my life, just sitting together at vc trying to fish at the sky while harpies are trying to kill us, sitting together every day at school watching videos reading Wikipedia pages and planning our gameplay or how to get the next item, all of those things made terraria one of my favorite games, and we did that 100% blind, so i think you should definitely buy this game if its on sale, and just play it with 3 friends. its really a joy.

  • @roshibomb4247
    @roshibomb4247 Год назад +9

    Some general tips for Terraria beginners:
    -You should probably start in a Classic world with a Classic character, Journey mode is fun but it's literally got Godmode built in as one of its many, many features to make the game substantially easier, which is a little bit OP.
    -The Terraria Wiki is your best friend. Seriously, it's got everything. My genuine favorite way to use it is to just aimlessly click on links and look at all of the cool items in the game, and maybe find something I think looks cool and try to get it in-game. Don't be afraid to use it!
    -If possible, play with friends. Terraria is so much better as a multiplayer game in my opinion, I almost never play alone.
    -Start with vanilla! It might be somewhat tempting to jump right into modded playthroughs, especially if you've played a lot of modded Minecraft or similar, but let me tell you... Terraria is no Minecraft. You have more than enough content to explore in the base game, it can already be very overwhelming for new players.
    -Pick a class. This might seem like a weird thing to say, but it's kind of important to mention. Terraria has four "classes," (Melee, Ranged, Magic, and Summoner) and most armor sets, accessories, and playstyles synergize with just one of these weapon types. This is less important in the earlier stages of the game but becomes increasingly more important the further you get into the game (especially after defeating an important progressional boss, that I will not mention by name, but should become pretty obvious which it is by what happens after it is killed). You can still choose to mostly ignore the class system, but you will likely be significantly less powerful than you "should be."
    Above all else, have fun! You don't have to follow any of this, none of these are hard and fast "rules." This is just how I tend to have the most fun playing, and what I feel like would be the most helpful set of basic tips for a beginner. Have a good one!

  • @ValenMKII
    @ValenMKII Год назад +15

    don't know if it's been mentioned but the extra accessory slots are almost a necessity and since the difficulty to unlock these are locked to their respective world it doesn't overthrow balance in my opinion

    As someone with hundreds of hours in this game and thinks its one of the best games of all time I absoultely agree with you on most of your points
    the beggining is really grindy and it can be really boring
    but to be honest i feel like shyguymask some what "spoiled" your experience.
    knowing what you're doing in this game is what makes it so incredibly fun. and I am very suprised you got all this out of it in 30 hours

    • @exzyle
      @exzyle Год назад +8

      Yeah, 30hrs for a first playthrough is really short. My first playthrough of the game took me around 110hrs. That being said, I used the wiki a serious amount while playing so... But anyways I now know the game perfectly as in I literally remember every drop rate, recipe, event etc. perfectly.

    • @roshibomb4247
      @roshibomb4247 Год назад +3

      @@exzyle My first playthrough was around 300 hours, and that was with a second person (also new to the game), Classic mode, and copious amounts of Wiki + RUclips to get our bearings. As of today, I've clocked in over 930 hours in the game (close to 1,000 if you count modded), have every single Steam achievement (yes, including fishing quests), and still play the game with friends every now and again. Expert feels like Classic did, Master feels like... well, Master is still pain, but that's because it's Master mode.
      Yet I still look up drop rates, crafting recipes, class loadouts, and find out new things that I literally never knew before almost every playthrough... because Terraria is literally massive lol

      It took me about 120 hours for my first normal mode. Once you understand the progression and how the mechanics work and what end game items are key it’s all the more tempting to dive in to expert or master mode. I started a master mode seed once I was just literally farming the moon lord in normal difficulty and I don’t regret it one bit. Master mode forced me to get more creative with my strategies and I absolutely love the grind and the farming of items. Some days I just spend hours making a nice little house for my npc’s. My master mode seed is my chefs kiss to everything I’ve learned in this game. Once I’m content I will dive in to mods.

I just feel like the balance of "Kill a boss, grind a bit for some new gear sometimes get a really rare drop, repeat" is so masterfully weaved, especially in expert mode. For my first playthrough was good, but then i didn't feel like playing it because " I already beat it" so i gave it a couple months and now i'm back and kicking! Hell, i even started hosting a server for me and my friends! To anyone that is feeling burnt out on terraria, just wait a bit and then try playing again. Terraria is easily one of my favorite games of all time, but for the first few times I tried to play it: I barely made it past the first boss before getting bored.

    i started playing terraria in 2015, stopped again around 2017-2018 and have recently started playing again (for about 2 months) and WOW the new stuff theyve added since i left is so mad! but i think this only really appealed to me partially, is because i already had practically an encyclopedic knowledge of all the basics, so i totally get how that could be quite jarring for people, watching the game progress from earlier variants certainly does help the game feel more smooth

    I think the reason his experience was so bad was BECAUSE, he was playing with someone that knew what they were doing. Instead of finding new things randomly, slowly finding random weird sht that's cool but you have no idea what it does, exploring new places without knowing what to look for. THAT is the correct experience, but when you play with people that have been playing it, they tend to give you things without saying what it does, throwing you into a boss fight without you knowing, pushing you off a ledge into the pits of hell and the jungle. It's horrible following someone around like a baby bird without ever learning to fly by yourself. I absolutely recommend playing by yourself in classic and taking it slow for first timers.

    Honestly one of my biggest criticisms of this game is that for the longest time autoswing/autofire was considered an "upgrade" (as in only later game weapons would have that property) rather than an accessibility feature ( _thankfully_ 1.4.4 fixed this and added an autofire option) which if anything made the early game even worse because you had to give yourself RSI just to be able to attack enemies effectively

    I think the extra accessory slots in higher difficulties actually gives more room for strategy and doesn’t lessen the constraints since from mid pre-hardmode up to late hardmode, boots/wings are almost a necessity for most playstyles (better mounts later into the game lessen this). Plus, the increased enemy health means you’ll probably want more damage accessories than usual to keep up. If the higher difficulties kept the 5 accessory slots from classic mode, you’d almost always have wings, boots, and a dash accessory on-leaving only 2 slots for customization (and one of them would probably just be something like an emblem or mechanical glove). It’d be even worse for 1.4 summoners who really benefit from the feral claw line’s autoswing bonus and thus would have almost all of your slots already set in stone.
    Also I think the start screen literally has a button linking to the official wiki so yeah, everyone looks stuff up all the time.

    As a veteran (who did buy some of the friends copies of a game and started on 1.2... well, to be exact, 1.3 was the true beginning as then I had a bought version of it), I can approve of that statement from the friends opinions. Hard to get in without a manual, easy to lose yourself in after you get a hang of it.
    PS: It's better to play together with similar knowledge (thus having to find strats on your own ooor having a band of friends that can make your experience memorable positively) or solo normal/Journey than play with a veteran/wiki.
    Also yea, I can agree with Master Mode statement of it being a static buff of enemy strength and little more gimmicks. So is For The Worthy (Even if there's new gimmicks here and there).

    I actually worked through terraria without using the wiki for the early game. When i experienced slime rain for the first time and got attacked by a giant boss slime I figured there was a way to make a boss summon and I noticed the MASSIVE CROWN and It’s named king slime so I made a crown. The hardest part was finding the crafting station so I went around the world and had the idea to use the purple glowing things on the ground and made my first boss summon.
    This is also what I did with the eye of Cthulhu when I randomly got jumped because if the game thinks you’re well equipped it has a chance of spawning. I won but wanted to fight it again. So I assumed that I would have to use the item that dropped from the smaller eyes and used my previous information to figure out how to make the suspicious looking eye.
    This was back in 2014 on the iPad. I love that it tells you nothing as going in completely blind made me want to test EVERYTHING. If you go in with even the slightest bit of knowledge yet not enough to be useful it can be a hinderance as that knowledge throws you off the trail of discovery.
    I also figured out a way of mining the corrupt blocks by buying purification powder from my newly housed npc the Druid and discovered it makes those blocks normal so I could mine the blocks to get to the orbs. Which then spawned the eater of worlds. I didn’t find this game to find progression in if you put in the time to experiment with everything. I thought everyone does this in games but I suppose it’s seen as a downside by a lot of people which I don’t really feel. You just need to get creative with it as it forced it out of me to progress.
