  • Phlogiston theory was used to explain various phenomena in the 1700s. Phlogiston was inconsistent and sometimes used as matter and other times a combination of matter and energy.
    Here we look at two reactions that today would be described as zinc + sulfuric acid and zinc oxide + sulfuric acid. These were a sticking point for chemists like Antoine Lavoisier because how could these two reactions result in the same product if they didn't have phlogiston? Eventually more was determined that solved this conundrum, but many scientists remained skeptical due to the ease of explanation using phlogiston.

    Cool! Had never heard of phlogiston theorized as having a negative mass!
