I just made this recipe and was amazed by how great it turned out. I swapped out the egg for 1/4 cup Just Egg to make it vegan, and it worked perfectly. The flavor is delicious and so reminiscent of a crab cake - and the texture is flawless. Fantastic recipe, so glad I discovered this video.
Thanks so much for watching. You make a great point about the egg substitute. I will add that into the videos next time. The egg replacement information is on the website. The term plant-based diet means largely or solely of plant-based foods and can contain some or limited animal products. The term vegan would have been misleading in the title. But maybe I'll start using plant-focused as the word for recipes because there is so much confusion about the term plant-based in particular! :)
Tried these tonight and really enjoyed the flavour! Though my cakes fell apart when frying, so I’m not sure what I did wrong there. We sprinkled the broken cakes over salad and it was still really nice!
Oh glad you liked the flavor!! Couple of tips to try 1) make sure all the water is squeezed out 2) press the mixture firmly when forming the crab cake and 3) make sure the oil is a little hotter when frying! Good luck and let me know how it goes! 💛
The title of this, "Lion's Mane Crab Cakes The best plant-based crab cakes," is misleading. Eggs are not plant-based. Vegans and some kidney disease patients eat totally plant-based, and that does not include eggs which is animal-based. For this to be vegan aka plant-based, you'd need an egg replacer, like Ener-G, Vegg, or other products available, and some people make their own egg replacer from scratch with chickpeas or mung bean.

@@bylusi, Just a word of caution, regardless of how anyone defines plant-based or vegan, if you're having a guest whose food issues you're not aware of or bringing food to holiday or other event, someone with an egg allergy hearing plant-based or vegan may assume they're safe and can end the gathering with a call to 911. Our daughter has a class 6 (highest possible) allergy to eggs. If someone presented food as plant-based or vegan and she ate it, but it turned out to have eggs, she'd end up in the hospital... or worse. To be clear, I'm not trying to be a pain about this, and I actually love eggs, but not being specific in food description could lead to a tragic event.
@@share2892, Thanks for your reply. We haven't tried it yet in Lion's Mane Crab Cakes. I just saw this reply, and it's ironic timing, because at this very moment, I have some Just Egg on my plate trying it for the very first time. We add a bit of black salt to make it more eggy, and it's really good. Unfortunately, because I have severe Kidney Disease, I'm on a low protein diet, and Just Egg has nearly double the protein of Simply Eggless, which the store was out of. So, I'm only having part of a serving. But our daughter, who has a severe egg allergy, can have the full amount and is at this moment enjoying a Just Egg omelette.
Thanks for watching the video. The title says "Vegan Optional" and the recipe instructions on how to swap out the egg are listed in the description. It's a very easy swap to make. I hope you try them!

Where do you purchase lions mane?
I have found them at local farmer’s market or a well-stocked large grocery store! Let me know where you find them!

Haha. If you tasted them you would not know the difference. The "crab" texture is unbelievably spot on.
You cant call it vegan or vegetarian your using a egg
The title says vegan optional. ❤️ In the notes there are instructions for using an egg substitute!
