    Transitioning form SolidWorks (again - job requirement). These videos make the transition so much smoother and easier. When I come across something I've done 1000 times in SolidWorks and attempt to do the same in Inventor, I get tripped up over differing commands and terminology. After watching one of your videos everything comes flooding back. Thank you for making my job easier!

    Hey Neil, that was my best project. The original spec was 140 pages. But I only had 38 pages worth of functionality funded by development all those years ago. Didn't have multi-body sheet metal back then...

    I have been intending to make some covers for our columns in the shop. square bolt flange at the bottom loads up with milling chips and is nearly impossible to sweep.

    In Oct. 1990 i wrote a Lisp program that appeared in Cadalist Magazine called "Flat Out". it used some interesting mathematics.
    My approach was to draw a solid cone. then chop off the top ie cutting plane perpendicular axis of the cone. this gives a round to round transition. Then draw a square on the base of this cone. Then using the 3 points to define a plan, 2 on vertex of the square side and the third point on the circumference of the top round that is half way between the 2 points on the square in plan view... or the 3rd point on the circle that lies on a line perpendicular to the line midway between the 2 points on the square.
    Then you have a cutting plan defined by these 3 point on the solid. cut and delete that side of the cone. Then do that 3 more times and you get a square to round transition.

When I first discovered your channel, I found your background music distracting, but I'm starting to get used to it. Especially in this one when I feel like we're modeling in middle earth!     Hi absolutely love your channel, I know multibody solids of sheet metal are new but is there anyway to make a flange meet the face of another body. Creating parts and having them interfere with each other is really getting old.

    Quick question.
    In actual sheet metal shops, the concentric parts like you show, are fine for a single solid body. It can be cut in auto cad or in a shear.
    But what about complex parts like this involving offsets and angles that are not parallel requires that multiple solid bodies be created.
    Can you touch on this? I know you don't do sheet metal ipt much. But I am a huge fan.

    Can you apply a top down/ or skeletal approach to sheet metal design within a part or assembly?
    Selfish questions/requests>>
    What can/can't you do after a multi body part file is converted into an assembly/ How do you share individual bodies to be worked on as sub assemblies or individual parts in this situation?
    How to project operations from one part to another in assembly. e.g boring etc. (Can you use sculpt?)
    Imate TUT please
    Can you successfully place parts with adaptivity into different assemblies? HOW??
    P.S
    I come from a woodworking/architectural background. Big fan of your instruction style. Will watch video whether I think I know what is covered or not. More likely than not I end up learning something anyway. Effortless, entertaining and always informative. Thank you for inviting us all into your head.

    Only Note: This part it can't be manufactured in reality , because on bending machine , most of them , you can't bend sheet metal like this , it has to be done in 2 parts , 2 halves .

      +Martin Basa We do this in our shop in one part using a press brake, but the round and the square are usually on center. It is somewhat tedious though because the part does curl back into the press brake and itself. As opposed to what's chosen in the video, when doing the lofted flange, I'm going to use the "press brake" output.

      Adhi Dwi Pramono Much easier to do with a manual box and pan brake, but it requires a lot more concentration. Box and pan brakes or leaf brakes allow you to wrap this part around, but getting it back out is another story. Much easier to split the part into two parts, bend and then assemble.

      Also it's fine if it's being Welded, but you need Seam and Connector allowances in reality.

      k factor being the amount to which a material will stress and strain. I always set it at .5 for rolling but screwed on working the bending out?

    these are really helpful videos. ive learnt a lot from you. is it possible to create a flat plan of an extruded pipe that is bent at various angles? example the bars on a lawnmower

      That depends on numerous things I guess. Is it modelled using the tube & pipe module or just a modelled sweep? Is the whole purpose of this just to get/measure the true length of the bar or do you need to actually see the full piece straightened out for placement on a drawing view?

      CloudCAD Ltd hi. thanks for your reply. i usually get step files from the customer and its a pain to work out the intial cut length before bending. is this something inventor can do if i remodel it or can it get the information from the step file or not at all? im able to get flat plan views from sheetmetal models and they work without too much trouble and are reasonably accurate

      Steve Sye Hmm it's difficult with step files, they don't tend to have any feature based info in them so there definitely won't be a property in there to get at to find the length or a sketch line. You might have to fiddle with advanced 3D sketch tools to get it, depending on what kind of part it is, quite difficult to answer without seeing it.

    That's not going to work in the field. For one thing, your area on your circle is much less than on the square, so this is no good for practical purposes. Sure, if you like to play with computers instead of doing actual work, I guess it's OK.
    Actually bending the sheet metal & cutting it doesn't work this way, however.
    That's why they should BAN engineers from designing stuff. They know nothing about the real world... For example, how are you going to change an alternator out on the roadside, that you can't get to without removing the fender, the wheel well, the air conditioning unit, and/or pulling the motor, when all you really need is a bigger engine compartment, where the alternator is easily reachable from underneath & held on with two bolts... Oh, I get it, call the tow truck, and 500 dollars labor later to have a shop do it...
