  • Jeff discusses what goes into the brakes on a J-Corder modified Technics deck and the reasoning behind his methods.
    After reviewing a lot of footage and combing through tape deck forums, Jeff realized that many people who take it upon themselves to service the brakes on their Technics deck may be doing more harm than good. In this video, he goes over the brake system and its' components while describing his method for repair and refurbishment.

    Found this video as a suggestion to the one that showed how to scrape the old pad from the brake shoe while it's in the machine... Okay, now I might have to live without my deck for a month while the shoe sits in a jar with the dissolvent, but the result is gonna be so much better. Thank you for this great advice!

      @@j-corderWill acetone or goo gone work for dissolving the glue?
      Thank you

      @@SDsailor7 Acetone will damage the plastic brake shoe and goo gone doesn't get through all the adhesive residue. That's why it needs to be scraped off with a razor. If there was a one stop shop solvent, that would be preferable.

      @@j-corder Yes, i then thought about it and figured it would damage the plastic.

    Hello, very interesting! Please tell me what thickness of the cork pad you use?What kind of glue do you use?

    • @j-corder
      @j-corder  3 года назад +1

      We use cork up to 1/4" inch thick for our brakes. You can see the glue we use at 21:14

    Soaking brake pads in mineral spirits for 4 weeks made the plastic very brittle and destroyed them.

    • @j-corder

      We have never experienced the plastic brake shoes becoming brittle after soaking in mineral spirits, and we've used this method for over a decade. Could you describe some more details of your process?

    • @RailwaysoftheWorld1
      @RailwaysoftheWorld1 2 года назад

      @@j-corder just like in your video - it soaked in a jar with mineral spirits for a month, after which it became opaque, porous and brittle. I probably had to check on it once in a while during this month.

      @@RailwaysoftheWorld1 Those are surprising results to us. We have used this method to restore brake shoes for years and it has never damaged the parts. We would never recommend using a method that would cause problems like this. Thank you for letting us know what happened in your case, and if you have more information we would appreciate you letting us know.
